15 Sep 02 - 12:36 PM (#784429) Subject: New DigiTrad: OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT From: dick greenhaus The long-awaited new edition of The Digital Tradition (about 9000 lyrics, about 4500 tunes) is now available on CD. It's been sent to those responsible for putting it on the site, so that will likely occur in the near future. The CD supports Windows, DOS and Macintosh. If you order it from me (Digital Tradition, 29 Powell Street, Greenwich CT 06831 US), it costs five bucks--that covers the CD, label, package, postage and gas to get to the Post office, with a bit left over for things like ink and equipment maintenance. If you have a copy, please feel free to copy it for friends. Thanks to Amos, who prepared them for download, here are the Macintosh versions. They, like the Windows version, were written by Mark Heiman.

16 Sep 02 - 12:24 PM (#785197) Subject: RE: New DigiTrad: OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT From: Bill D just a word folks--this new format will make it MUCH easier to find places where you say.."..but that's not the way I heard it!...The tune is 'different' and the words are not what I remember...and he left out a verse." etc.... Remember...this is a volunteer effort and it is (mostly) folk music. There will surely be songs you'd rather were edited differently....but this is an on-going process which, by it's nature will never be finished, nor satisfy everyone. I just saw two songs with what I am sure are errors in the lyrics, but I can deal with it by asking questions, doing searches....and...by simply using the folk process and singing it the way I want!..Same with tunes.... No one...least of all Dick...ever claimed that this database it intended to be definitive and etched in stone...it is a resource, like the books and records you have (even like "Rise Up Singing" *grin*).... I am reminded of the story of the guy who claimed to have a talking dog. "What is the outside of a tree called" says man to dog. "Bark, bark" "And what is the top of a house?" ..."roof, roof" "Hey!" says his friend, "who are you kidding? Those are set-up answers! You can't fool me!" "Well, it's a start", says the owner,"...and it's just a wonder the dog talks at all!" |

17 Sep 02 - 07:33 AM (#785912) Subject: RE: New DigiTrad: OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT From: GUEST Mrs. Lemon, I don't understand your post. Can you explain, please? |
17 Sep 02 - 10:35 AM (#785983) Subject: RE: New DigiTrad: OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT From: Joe Offer It's explained a bit more elsewhere. Somebody sold Mrs. Lemon a CD of the Digital Tradition, which is available for free download. The CD also included other programs, but those programs wouldn't operate unless she paid a fee for a key code to unlock the programs. If you produce a copy of the Digital Tradition for somebody, it's OK to ask for something to defray your reproduction cost, but it ain't fair to sell a free program. -Joe Offer- |

17 Sep 02 - 11:28 AM (#786005) Subject: RE: New DigiTrad: OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT From: Bill D I have come across a potential bug..(there are bound to be a few in a new product)... I opened it, opened the 'search' window and searched on the word 'mouse'. I got several hits, including "The Frog & the Mouse"...Then I clicked on the song title IN THE SEARCH WINDOW, and got a blank rectangle and a hung PC!...that is, it refused to do ANYTHING more....not even ctrl-alt-del would work....so I rebooted and tried again, this time scrolling down the list to the song I wanted. It displayed and played just fine.....once again I tried clicking IN the search window, and it again gave me a serious BLUE SCREEN error. Perhaps the software link from the search box is not right. I will email the author asking that he test it, but I would suggest you access songs only thru the scroll window until........ |

17 Sep 02 - 07:57 PM (#786250) Subject: RE: New DigiTrad: OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT From: Snuffy Mario, Does this mean you'll be making a new list? With 8981 songs and only 4025 tunes, we seem to be worse off than we were two years ago! But I think many tunes have been posted but not included in the latest DT. |
17 Sep 02 - 11:04 PM (#786364) Subject: RE: New DigiTrad: OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT From: MMario I've only compared the first 510 tunes - but so far running about 56% of the current "missing" tunes have already been submitted. |
18 Sep 02 - 06:00 PM (#787013) Subject: RE: New DigiTrad: OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT From: Susan of DT The number of tunes is not the same as the number of songs with tunes. Many songs share tunes. I get 4410 songs with tunes |
19 Sep 02 - 08:54 AM (#787411) Subject: RE: New DigiTrad: OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT From: MMario I come up with 4568 without tunes based on a search for {not}play.exe in the dos version. If I remember - that means the number of tunes associated with songs is up at least several hundred from the '99 version. As I have said, I expect this number (of missing tunes) to drop drastically due to the number of tunes that are already known to have been submitted and/or posted in the forum. Once I have the list it will: a) be available (by e-mail) to anyone who wants it. b) I will be working on converting to songwrite as many as possible of the tunes already submitted as midi or nwc and re-submitting them. At least that will be one less step for Dick. c) I will also have available a "found tune" list with the locations of those tunes already posted to the forum. (If I get ambitious this list will also have marked the tunes I can e-mail out on request)(but due to my own inefficiency *that* little task is going to take a bunch of cross-referencing and double checking - and may be delayed a bit.) d) I will continue to track the submission of "missing" tunes (and updating the lists of both "missing" and "found" tunes) at least for those submitted through me or that I see posted. If there is anything else or a procedural change that would help - let me know.

19 Sep 02 - 09:07 AM (#787421) Subject: RE: New DigiTrad: OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT From: GUEST MMario I'd be happy to send you any tunes that I can find, but aren't included in the DT. Given the fact that most of the tunes submitted to you haven't been included in the new DT release, is there any point? |
19 Sep 02 - 09:51 AM (#787439) Subject: RE: New DigiTrad: OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT From: MMario But a lot of them ARE available on the forum or alan's mudcat midi page, or through me - so yes, I would say it is worth it. (and there is a project in the works that may make them more available faster) The amount of work putting these into the DT is high; I know Joe puts about a half hour on the average into each one I forward to him - and that doesn't include converting to songwrite! if the lyrics have not been 'fitted' to the tune then the time goes up exponentionally. Not everybody had the advantage/disadvantage of being chained to a phone and computer 8 hours a day, five days a week.

19 Sep 02 - 10:33 AM (#787468) Subject: RE: New DigiTrad: OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT From: dick greenhaus A possible clarification. In preparing the Spring 2002 edition, I found myself inundated with songs to which I had no tune. At the same time, I found myself in a severe time bind, so that I could not do the necessary conversion and entry of many of the tunes that were submitted by Mudcatters. The next edition will go a fair way towards correcting the lyrics/tune imbalance. |

24 Sep 02 - 04:54 PM (#790530) Subject: Attn Mrs Lemon, Trevor and Joe Offer From: GUEST,Doctor Tarot Hello, I dont often visit the DT site due to the time it would take me to fully digest everything that is going on. However, a little bird told me that the new DT download was available, so I thought I would pop in and catch up.... I am "that British chap" that's been selling that music CDROM that Mrs Lemon, Trevor and Joe Offer were getting so worked up about, and I thought that I should put the record straight once and for all. * I was given express permission from DG to use the DT on the CDROM and sell the CDROM for profit. I have an email from DG to that effect in my possession for open scrutiny at any time. * The CDROM does NOT simply copy the DT. There are many other features that took me hundreds of hours to find, collate and put into a presentable format. * The CDROM contains sample softwares (freewares, sharewares and crippled demos) which need to be registered to release full funtionality - this is ALWAYS made clear to the purchaser at the time of purchase. * No music files were stolen. * No software was stolen. * Royalties on some music files have been paid to the copyright owners. * I have always respected the wishes of thse musicians who did not want their work to appear on the CDROM (Barry T, Henrick etc) * Yes, I have made some profit.... I have also made numerous contributions to local charities, but I have so far never let this be known. * The CDROM is still available but now at a reduced cost due to a reduced market and will continue to be "while stocks last". * The amount of complaints directly sent to me may be counted one the fingers of ONE hand ! Please, stop this back biting and if you have a problem with the CDROM or the way I conduct my business, tell me to my face. If you have the CDROM, then you know how to contact me.... Please do so and please refrain from blackening my character in here. Most people get on with me fine. Read my guestbook and see how many complaints that holds. The next release (if there is one) of the CDROM will NOT include the DT as you all feel so strongly about it. Best Regards to Dick for the new version, and best wishes to all my customers and friends.... if I have any left now ! DH |

A second attempt at re-downloading and installation did no better, so the file is getting corrupted somewhere along the way. I don't want to blame the zip utility as it may be something else like a system incompatability, so I guess I'll wait a while for any "debugging" that might need to be done and send for the CD. At least we had no lockups or "crashes" as reported by a couple of folks here. We are running an old souped-to-the-max Gateway P-166, 8-gig HD, W-98-b., 64megs ROM(?), 200 Mz Pentium, connected by cable modem. I hope that we will be kept posted on developments and eventually get something that will work on this beast.

25 Sep 02 - 02:41 AM (#790789) Subject: RE: New DigiTrad: OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT From: MudGuard Joe, the new DT is running on my NT as well as on my W2K Prof. Only one minor problem (didn't check whether it exists on W2K as well) on WinNT: the list of instruments for playing a song is not shown completely, the lower part (all below Ooh Choir) is invisible but can be selected - but as I don't see which instrument is selected it is a bit of a lottery... |
25 Sep 02 - 04:08 AM (#790809) Subject: RE: New DigiTrad: OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT From: GUEST,Dr Tarot Hello Joe, thanks for the reply, but I *was* aware of both of those items, and now everyone has a chance to see for themselves what has transpired. I stand on what I said, I didnt use any of Barry Taylors tunes, and the support seemed to swing the other way for a while toward the end of that thread. It was the specific comments in this thread that really upset me. Also, I should apologise for somewhat hijacking this thread, so I'll go away again now. Ive said my pieces, and the offer is still open for disaffected customers to contact me direct. David Harris aka Dr Tarot |

What an achievement for those who put it together!! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! If you have broadband, download it TODAY. Only took 2 minutes and another to unzip. If you've never trotted through the old or new DT on your own box, GET IT! It's a totally different thing being able to browse the listings and run the tunes while you read the words, much different than doing online searches. You'll find truckloads of cool new songs you never dreamed of. Go for it. THANK YOU LADIES AND GENTLEMEN WHO MADE THIS HAPPEN!!!!! |

Thanks a lot. J. de Lasala SPAIN |

Must be on account of you lighting up a few more table lanterns. I see you cleaned up all the whiskey bottles too. Now what you need is a nice picture on the wall of those poker dogs. Thanks for sprucing the place up. Rex |

I'm sure we don't sound wound up, just letting friends on the 'cat know that they may have the option of paying you for the database if they wish. And I'm sure, bearing in mind all of the above, and other threads, that you won't get your arse in your hand when you know that somebody is doing a great job of copying your CD and giving out to people. Easy come....... |
