Lyr Req: No Likee Icky Yucky Sushi (Pat Donohue)

This weekend, Prairie Home Companion is re-airing the show on which Pat Donohue does his "Sukiyaki" parody, which contains lines like "No likee icky yucky sushi."

I don't have the means to tape the show, which comes on
from 11A to 1P in Seattle
from 12 noon to 2P in Portland
and in San Diego from either 11-1 or 12-2, I think.

I mention this in case anyone out here wants to catch the show -- worth it just for this song.

Also, maybe someone will be able to record Pat's song from that broadcast.

Or maybe someone already has the words.

Please post the lyrics if/when you have them.

Thanks,

Genie

PS, I understand the folks who own copyright on "Sukiyaki" have prevented Pat from releasing the song on a CD. But apparently they allow it to be sung on the PHC broadcasts.

You can listen to the song here: ARCHIVED PERFORMANCE OF A PRAIRIE HOME COMPANION: May 13, 2000. The lyrics to his sushi song "Sushi-Yucky (Sukiyaki)" are HERE.

~Masato

Links updated. It's called SUSHI SONG on that page. --JoeClone, 24-Mar-2008.

Thanks, Masato. I haven't quite figured out how to 'do' web radio (especially the downloading/recording) on my computer yet.
However, I played hooky from church this morning to listen to the rebroadcast, and I found a tape of myself that I don't mind taping over, so I'm going to tape the song when it comes on, any minute now.

I'm glad you posted the link to the PHC archives of that show. You beat me to the draw -- as usual. *G*

Melanie, I'm sure you'll enjoy this song (plus Randy Newman and the bluegrass group [Watson's Creek?] on the same show.)

Well, I found out there's nothing to playing and downloading the songs and other clips from the net radio shows beyond what I normally do to download an MP3.  Just click on the link, if you've got Real Player, and it plays, and you can save it or replay it, or whatever.  (I had just never tried this with an archived radio show before.)

So here are the lyrics.    And here is a link to Sushi Song   specifically.

(The bluegrass group on that show -- May 13, 2000 -- was "Nickel Creek."  Very worth listening to.)

SUSHI-YUCKY (SUKIYAKI)
Lyrics: Pat Donohue
Tune:  "Sukiyaki"

I am from Minnesota.
I went to Tokyo ta
Visit the land
Of enchantment and quaint pagoda.
I almost died
The night they tried
To make me eat that yucky sushi.

They think it sounds so yummy,
But,  hey, I ain't no dummy!
I knew no way
It would stay
Down in my tummy!
I took a bite
And I was right!
No likee icky yucky sushi

1st bridge
It took some wine
But I fin'lly agreed
To eat that dish
Of dead fish and seaweed.

What happened next I don't know.
I loosened my kimono.
I make a noise
Like the voice
Of Yoko Ono!
And just like that,
Right on the mat,
Me sicky  -- icky yucky sushi.

(Instrumental break with whistling)

2nd bridge
Don't eat raw squid
Like I did, 'cause it's true,
It make you do
Like when you've got the flu.

So if you're in Nagoya,
Here's a suggestion for ya:
Take my advice,
Stick with rice
And think twice before ya
Bow in disgrace,
Lose lunch and face--
No pickee icky yucky sushi.
No likee icky, yucky sushi!

Lyrics corrected as suggested below. --JoeClone, 20-Sep-02.

I believe the words should be 'What happened next I don't know, I loosened my kimono.'

I heard it over the weekend and it was HILARIOUS. I do love sushi, however, and nowadays some of the chi-chi grocery stores have sushi bars in them. You can get 9 pieces of fresh-made eel roll for about $5.

Now, before anyone makes rolly-eyes about eel, eel is a fish. The meat is white and flaky like any other fish - this one's cooked, rather than raw. And it's damn good. I'm also a sucker for a good spicy tuna roll.

Several years ago, someone on PHC did a parody song about going to a business meeting and falling asleep - it was to the tune of "El Paso." I want to say, that might have been Pat Donohue as well, but I don't remember.

I would have posted this thread after accidentally catching that song while looking for Wait wait don't tell me, and just cracking up! I also heard "loosened" rather than "looked in" for the Kimono line. Also, I could have sworn I heard "no Yankee likee yucki sushi" at some point...

Yeah, Eagle, I figured that "loosened" out after I posted the lyrics. (It sounded like "looked in," but that didn't make sense, and I realized he was probably saying "loosened.)

OK, Joe Clones, can you please fix that line in the text?
Arigato.

Gypsy, if you are looking for the tune, look for "Sukiyaki." Of course, if you go to the link I posted for PHC and for that song, you can hear Pat Donohue play and sing it.

Mrrzy, yes, it is "loosened," I'm sure. But I'm also pretty sure the other lines are exactly as I posted. I was playing and replaying Pat Donohue's MP3 as I typed the lyrics. But if you listen to it again, maybe you can tell us which verse sounds like it ends that way.

Gee, and Radriano served sushi at the party for Charley Noble.
Wonder if Charley survived, after spending the night eating sushi and playing the banjo.
I spent the night eating sushi and listening to the banjo.
I feel awful.
Was it the sushi?

Gee, Joe, they told me you had moved to London! ;-)

Actually I love surimi, (cooked) eel, and squid (a la "insalata del mare"), as well as being OK with sushi. It's still a hilarious song.

Maybe banjo players should always serve sushi. You know, spread the blame?

Most Americans (except for those of us in Hawaii, and probably San Francisco as well) still think that "sushi=raw fish", and this song does nothing to dispel that notion. Sushi is actually vinegared rice, which is rolled in a sheet of nori (pressed seaweed) along with other stuff, and then sliced. (The finished slices are also known as sushi.) Sometimes it's stuffed into a cone of seasoned tofu, or served in a little ball with a slice of other stuff on top. The "other stuff" can be pickled or fresh vegetables, wasabi (horseradish paste), cooked fish or seafood, and, yes, raw fish. Which is no doubt how the confusion got started. Raw fish that's sliced and served as an appetizer or a meal is not sushi, but sashimi. See, there are pedants in other areas, too!

Aloha,
Mark

Thanks for the culinary lesson, Mark. As I said above, I really like sashimi and I'm "OK with sushi." It's the raw fish (with the right condiments) I like; the vinegared rice and seaweed doesn't thrill my palate nearly as much.

As for the technical accuracy of the song (or lack thereof), just put it down to poetic license. (I'm sure Pat has one.) *G*

Mark - thank you for that correction - it is one I grow tired of repeating (My Mom grew up in Japan and China)

I LOVE sushi - but it isn't on my diet; but therre's a variation (nagamaki?) which substitutes a slice of meat for the rice and then you grill the roll....

yummy!

While I don't like to align myself with people who seem prejudiced, I've got to say that those who eat sushi have got more faith in commerce than I have.

Gee, sometimes I feel just like a closed-minded fool. I heard Chuck Pyle do this song a year or so ago and just assumed he wrote it. I have great respect for Chuck as a performer and writer; I've always had great respect for Pat as a player - now, as a songwriter, too. Cheers.

Does anyone know the chords to the sushi song? I know it's in E but I'm having some trouble w/the rest. Actually, I'm just too lazy to figure it all out myself.
Thanks,

Ichy Yucky Sushi
Pat Donihue

AM FROM MINNESOTA, I WENT TO TOKYO TO
VISIT THE LAND OF ENCHANTMENT AND QUAINT PAGODA.
I ALMOST DIED THE NIGHT THEY TRIED
TO MAKE ME EAT THAT YUCKY SUSHI.

THEY THINK IT SOUNDS SO YUMMY,
BUT, HEY, I AIN'T NO DUMMY,
I KNEW NO WAY IT WOULD STAY DOWN IN MY TUMMY.
I TOOK ONE BITE, AND I WAS RIGHT,
NO LIKEY ICKY YUCKY SUSHI.

IT TOOK SOME WINE, BUT I FINALLY AGREED
TO EAT THAT DISH OF DEAD FISH AND SEAWEED.

WHAT HAPPENED THEN I DON'T KNOW,
I LOOSENED MY KIMONO,
I MAKE A NOISE LIKE THE VOICE OF YOKO ONO.
THEN JUST LIKE THAT, RIGHT ON THE MAT,
ME SICKY ICKY YUCKY SUSHI.

DON'T EAT RAW SQUID, LIKE I DID, 'CAUSE IT'S TRUE,
IT MAKE YOU DO LIKE WHEN YOU GOT THE FLU.

SO IF YOU'RE IN NAGOYA, HERE'S A SUGGESTION FOR YA,
TAKE MY ADVICE, STICK WITH RICE, AND THINK TWICE BEFORE YA
BOW IN DISGRACE, LOSE LUNCH AND FACE,
NO PICKY ICKY YUCKY SUSHI.

NO LIKEY ICKY YUCKY SUSHI.

And delete this post as well.

Not wanting to sound like a Politically Correct Brigadier, but another thread about George Formby contained a few objections on racist grounds to the song Mr Woo. I wonder if these lyrics are not a bit near the bone too? Just thought I'd say!
