Subject: Lyrics to Junco Partner?
From: pcullie@leopard.com

Looking for lyrics to Junco Partner, a folk/blues. The chorus is: Down the road, down the road/ my junco partner/ he was loaded as he could be/ he was knocked out, knocked out loaded/ and he sang this song to me.

Verses? Anyone? Feel free to e-mail me off list.

Patrick

Here's how I learned it:

Junko Partner

chorus
Down the road, down the road, down the road
Saw my Junko partner, partner, partner
He was loaded as can be
He was knocked down, knocked down loaded
He was loaded with misery

Once I had a million dollars
Had a lot of good friends all around
Now I don't have any money
And my good friends cannot be found

Six months ain't no sentence
One year ain't no time
Got some friends in Angola
Doing forty to ninety nine.

Give me beefsteak when I'm hungry
Give me whiskey when I'm dry
Give me the tincture when I'm sickly
And religion when I die

Earl - Did you learn that from the Bolk Blues of Eric Von Schmidt - sounds exactly like he used to sing it....

Mississippi Max, I originally learned it from a Holy Modal Rounders album which probably came out about the same time as the Eric Von Schmidt album. I heard that it was a Lousianna prison song and I have a feeling I am missing a few verses.

In the liner notes from Dr John's Gumbo he says the song was a staple of the street scene in NOLA, verses would be shouted out as the song played. You get a sense of that listening to his recording where the verses become almost indecipherable as if various intoxicated characters are calling out their verse.

I would recommend that you listen to Little Booker's version from a man who lived the life in New Orleans and Angola. A unique pianist whose life got wasted at a young age. However good other versions are I beleive this to be the real thing.

Covered by the Clash on the 'Sandinista' 3-LP set, I don't recall where they got their version.

I sing a version of Dr John's (as best I could decipher):

Down the road, come the Junco Partner,
Man he was loaded, as could be,
But he got knocked out, knocked out loaded,
& now he wobbles, all over the street

Singin' 6 months, that ain't no sentence,
Lord,& 1 year, that ain't no time,
They got boys, out on the ponderosa,
servin nine, to ninety-nine,

If I had me, a million dollars,
just one million, to call my own,
I would buy me, all the land 'round the parish prison,
& I would start me, a lil moochie farm

Give me whiskey, when I feel a lil frisky,
beer's a mighty good drink, when I get a lil dry,
& give me tobacco, when I feel a lil sickly,
but give me heaven, heaven, before I die,

repeat 1st verse

Might be a bit adrift here & there, but it works for me,

MR.Crump, ypu're missing a verse between the If I had a million dollars and Give me whiskey, but first you repeat the chorus and then it goes into the verse that goes:

A penny make a nickel and a nickel make a dime and dime make a half and a half a make a dollar, make ya holla.

there's some other stuff before he gets to this part but I can't really make it out.

Here are the words Dr. John gives in the book, /Under a Hoodoo Moon/:

Down the road come junko partner
Lord he was loaded as can be
Lord he was knocked down, knocked down loaded
You know he wobbled all over the street.

Singing six months ain't no sentence
Lord and one year ain't no time
They got boys on the Ponderosa
Serving nine to ninety-nine

If I had one million dollars
Just one million to call my own
I'd buy all the land round the parish prison
And I'd grow me a big mootie (marijuana) farm

Once I had plenty of money
I had good friends all over town
Now I burnt up my last money
Even my jonky partners have put me down

I got a woman in the parish
And another in the house of D
And another in St. Gabriel's
Doin' a li'l time for me

Give me whiskey
When I get a little frisky
It's a mighty good drink
When you get a little dry
Give me reefer
When I get a little sickly
But give me a little heaven (heroin)

Down the road come junko partner
Lord he was loaded as can be
Lord he was knocked down, knocked down loaded
And he sang this dope-fiend song to me.
Before I die.

Junko Partner, Roland "Stone" LeBlanc (late 1950's)

As close as I could hear it from the recording:

Wah. . . (horns intro)
Say, looka here now, child
Wah. . . (horns again)
Um, Hum, I wanna tell yawl a little story

Well down the road come my Chilo Bella
She was so-o-o tore up as can be
She was wobblin', I mean a wobblin' down Rampart
Um, hum, a hum, she didn't, no, no, she didn't recognise me

If I had, if I had, if I had one million dollars
Ya, ya, ya, ya, ya, one million, lord sugar baby all my own
Don't you know I would build me a big tobacco plantation
And me and Chilo Bella, uh we could call it our own

Yah, Lord well I tried, I say I tried to pawn my knife & pistol
Ya, ya, ya, tried to pawn, I tried to pawn my watch & chain
I would have tried to pawn my Chilo Bella
But the poor girl, no, no, she couldn't sign her name.

Don't you know, I want water, I say, I want water when I'm thirsty
Lord, cause it's a good drink, Lord, Sugar Baby, when your're dry
Don't you know, I say, a when you're dry
And I want sorrow, umm, when I'm in misery
But I'll settle, I say, I'll settle for some cherry pie.

Ya now baby, I was standin', I was standin'. I was standin' on the corner
With my Turkish, Lord with my Turkish in my hand
When the Police came and took my Turkish
They said Nooo no no no uh man it ain't got no brand

Doncha, doncha know, baby, six months,
I say now six months ain't no sentence
Ya, ya, ya, ya, and one year, lord baby, ain't no time,
Doncha know, I said, it ain't no time
I was born, I was born in prison
Um, now I'm back here, yes I am I'm back here, serving ninty-nine

Ya, Ya, Ya, Ya, Ya, Ya
Down the Road, down the Road, down the Road, down the Road,
Down the Road, down the Road, down the Road, down the Road,
Na, na, na, na, na.

Mike Bloomfield also did a version of "Junko Partner" but I have no liner notes.

The version set out by Guest Joe above, (chilo Bella, took my Turkish) was on an 8-track tape I used to have of Dr. John's greatest hits, volume 1. I have not been able to find that version on any recording since then. The version on "Medical School", Mac Rebennac's early years, contains a sanitized version.
