24 Sep 02 - 10:51 AM (#790284) Subject: RE: 111 From: wysiwyg Jeep, when you make a Mudcat Booboo, you just go to the Help Forum and tell them what you did, and give the thread name, and say what you'd like done to fix it. Then a Mudcat volunteer (AKA Mudelf or JoeClone) comes along when they get a chance, and fix it. Unless it's a problem you can correct yourself, like a booboo in a post which you can correct by just posting again with the correction, or unless fixing it would be against some Mudcat policy, they are usually happy to do it. ~S~ |

(www makes a difference) try the Mornington Crescent message board. I think you will find current thinking is that the Victoria line is everso infra-difg old boy. (Spot Mr Red's contributions). FWIW 111 is the emergency number in NZ. It all started when they imported button A & button B (remember them?) but had all the phone dials backwards, but not the exchange equipment - so 111 it had to be - now which emergency service did you want? Fire, Police, Ambulance, Coast Gaurd or....... Relate? (UK marriage guidance consellors) |

24 Sep 02 - 08:07 PM (#790641) Subject: RE: BS: 111 From: Mr Red Concertinas - Yea when they get round to it. Hurdy Gurdies not. Bathwater definitely goes round the other way. Bro-in-law reckons that the effect is not strictly the coriolis effect but one with another obscure name - he did explain but is is a marine geologist with the NZ Oceonagraphic Institute so he should know. Lets just say the water goes in a straight line and aims for the plughole and by the time it gets there the inconsiderate earth has rotated a little to the left - just enough to create a vortex. I will be asking questions later! No I am not having you all on, the phone dials went tother way round. AND no they didn't ask for reverse charges either - they called it "collect" - US style. |

26 Sep 02 - 09:39 AM (#791698) Subject: RE: BS: 111 From: Bagpuss The idea that wayer goes round a plughole in the opposite direction in the 2 hemispheres is a myth. There is a coriolis effect, but it is too weak to have that effect. The direction of draining water is more governed by agitation in the water, often related to the way the basin is filled. The myth is perpetuated by eterprising people at the equator who "demonstrate" the effect either side of the equator, but who in fact contrive the effect by the way they fill the bowls. Because it has become "common knowledge" and because it is supposedly related to a real effect, science teachers have continued to perpetuate the myth. This site: http://www.ems.psu.edu/~fraser/Bad/BadCoriolis.html Explains it better than I can and shows how to fake the effect. Bagpuss |
