At a recent John Kirkpatrick Gig at the Royal Oak in Lewis,East Sussex he sang a song he called the Wild Wild Berry. I seem to remember him saying it was it was written/sung by ****** Pascoe?? All ive been able to find so far is a link to Judy Cook's site, but the words did'nt seem to match my recolection. The song mentions Hunters Moon and the The Deadly Nightshade. Any help??

Chris

Seems to be a version of Lord Randal; the following is from Judy Cook's site: THE WILD, WILD BERRY (pdf/Acrobat format)

This mentions Hthe hnters mMoon and the woody nightshade. Not this one?

! Or hunters moon...

Link was from

Far From The Lowlands: Judy Cook
Unaccompanied Songs and Ballads
which has no fewer than three versions of Lord Randal. She says The Wild Wild Berry was collected by Gwilym Davies from Ray Driscol in England.

I copied this from Judy Cook's Website. I'm sure she won't mind, but I'll send her a personal message to make sure. I just figured out how to copy text from PDF documents. Kewl.
Judy's CD's are terrific, by the way.

THE WILD, WILD BERRY
(traditional UK)

Young man comes from hunting faint and weary
"What does ail my lord, my dearie?"
"O Mother dear, let my bed be made
For I feel the gripe of the woody nightshade."
Lie low sweet Randal
chorus:
Now you young men all who do eat full well
And they that sup right merry
'Tis far better, I entreat,
To have toads for your meat
Than to eat of the wild, wild berry

This young man he died eftsoon
By the light of a hunters' moon
'Twas not by bolt, nor yet by blade
But the deathly gripe of the woody nightshade
Lie low sweet Randal
(chorus)

This lord's false love, they hanged her high
For her deeds were the cause of her love to die
And in her hair they entwined a braid
Of the leaves and the berries of the woody nightshade
Lie low sweet Randal
(chorus)

This is the second version of Lord Randal (Child Ballad #12) on this recording. This one has a much more literary sound to it.

Collected by Gwilym Davies from Ray Driscol in England. I have altered the words and tune slightly from the way it was collected

I do remember JK saying it was a version of Lord Randal.

Judy won't mind, because it isn't her song; though she's recorded an arrangement of it. As stated above, it came from Ray Driscoll. Gwilym Davies recorded it from him in 1993. Ray was born in Ireland, but grew up in London and subsequently worked in Shropshire. He learned this song (and also a version of The Death of Queen Jane, which I posted here some time ago at The Death of Queen Jane) from "an itinerant worker called Harry Civil who used to work on a nearby farm and sleep in the barn. Harry was infamous in the locality and was thrown out of pubs on more than one occasion."

This particular variant of Lord Randal has never been found anywhere else; as Gwilym Davies suggests, it is most likely a recent romantic reworking of the old ballad. It was first published in English Dance and Song, vol.56 no.3, Autumn 1994.

It's the title track of the recent album by Stephanie Hladowski & C Joynes http://www.boweavilrecordings.com/weavil_49.html . I also heard Chris Wood sing a great version of it with his trio last night in Bristol.

Here is a version of "The Wild Berry Song", (a heavily cut down "Lord Randall"), sung by the original "Elsie`s Band" at "The Red Lion" F.C., Turners Hill in 1996. It was recorded on a hand held piece of equipment of unknown ownership or vintage, hence the dodgy result. We learned this version from our friend Ray Driscoll in Padstow, circa 1994, and we do it in the same spirit and tempo as Ray would do it.
