David Johansen & The Harry Smiths

Anybody heard David Johansen & The Harry Smiths. They're an acoustic folk and blues band from New York City.

This is the same David Johansen who was the lead singer of The New York Dolls, the pre-punk punk band. Later on, he was Buster (Hot Hot Hot) Poindexter.

Anyways, now he's doing songs by Mississippi John Hurt, Furry Lewis and other blues and folk greats. He's really good.

The band is named after the guy who created the Folkways Anthology Of American Folk Music.

This is my first post and my name is Nick. I also have a first cousin named Nick and that's why my Mudcat name is Nick's Cousin Nick.

He appears at the Bottom Line in NYC quite frequently. In addition he also makes appearances there as Buster Poindexter.

And--Nick---good to hear about your geneology. Say hello to cuz Nick. Must be a delightful fellow, surely.

I really love these two albums, especially the first one.
Davy Jo really taps into the essence of a lot of these old songs.
It's funny because when the New York Dolls first came out in the early seventies all my music friends laughed at me for liking them. "They are just a fad!," I was told. "Yeah, I know, but that Johansson guy really has some talent. I can see him reinventing himself as a blues singer years from now."
