I know this aint folk and I'm willing to grovel but I do need to find the author of this song. It may not even be the title but the words are in it somewhere. If you can help just let me know how many times I have to write out "don't do it again"! I wouldn't mind but I don't even like the song it's just for business reasons etc. Honest!
Regards Baz

This might be what you're looking for but probably isn't. Louden Wainwright III had a song that went something like this:

I used to have a red guitar
I smashed it one drunk night
smashed it in the classic style
as Peter Townsend might
Burned it in the fireplace till all was left
was six pegs and six strings
Kate she said "you are a fool
you've done a foolish thing"

there's a middle part I can't remember then it ends:

I bought myself a blonde guitar
I had it for three days
Some junky stole my blonde guitar
God works in wonderous ways

Earl thanks for trying but it's not the one I'm afraid.

Lyrics copied from the web site of Chris While & Julie Matthews:

BLUE SONGS ON A RED GUITAR
Julie Matthews, from the album 'Such is Life'

Me and my shadow we're never apart.
We know the blues by heart.
We sing them in the morning with the sun on the rise,
Sing them at night to star-studded skies;
And I'm not crazy, though it looks that way.
It's just that me and my shadow like to play—

CHORUS: Blue songs on a red guitar.
Me and my shadow do a fine routine;
And it's taking the aching right out of my heart,
Playing blues on a red guitar.

Well, I talk to the walls, but the walls never hear.
My pillow won't dry up none of my tears;
But when the night comes down and my shadow comes out ,
She knows what all of this heartache's about;
And I'm not afraid of the darkness, you see.
It's only my shadow that's following me,
Singing—CHORUS

And I will not be denied my sorrow.
I've earned the right to feel this way.
Maybe I will change my tune tomorrow,
But just tonight I think I'll play—CHORUS
