BS: THINGS THAT I LIKE

Tom T. Hall wrote a good song titled, "I LOVE". I think we all would benefit by listing just a few things we like. We see enough about what people don't like. Lets try.

I LIKE
OLD FENCE ROWS COVERED WITH HONEYSUCKLE. THE FRAGRENCE IS SO NICE THERE SHOULD BE A CHARGE. SMELLS BEST AT NIGHT.

DOGS. WHATS NOT TO LIKE?

LITTLE CHILDREN. THEIR INNOCENCE AND TRUST IS TRULY WONDERFUL.

CHICKEN AND DUMPLINGS FOR SUNDAY DINNER.(THE MEAL EATEN WHEN YOU GET HOME FROM CHURCH, BEST WITH FAMILY AND AT LEAST ONE FRIEND.)

SUNSETS HERE IN THE BLUE RIDGE. THE AIR IS GETTING SHARP AT NIGHT AND MAKES IT EVEN BETTER.

BIRDS,(SEE DOGS)

PICKUP TRUCKS AND OLD MEN

OLD WOMEN TAKING CARE OF OLD MEN

SUNLIGHT COMING IN MY KITCHEN WINDOW WHILE I EAT MY BREAKFAST.

REMEMBERING TO THANK THE LORD FOR ALL THE ABOVE

JEEP

Hi, Khandu: You listed your guitar twice.... hmmmm...

My list has to start with I love the Lord, then in no particular order, my wife, friends and family, the glory of a beautiful fall day... my wife and I are driving up to New Hampshire tomorrow to enjoy the colors. I love doing something for someone when they're down and not expecting it.. I love the sound of voices in harmony when you get one perfect chord and you know it. I even love the smell of the lawn when I mow it... even if tufts pop up as soon as turn my back. I love sunsets where we live... at the corner of Sunset Drive and Hillcrest Avenue. I love the smell of burning leaves in the fall, even though it's against the law in most of the United States, now. I love that first slice of pizza, when it hits my taste buds. I love it when people connect, because we spend so much time talking past each other. I love the new-found friends I've made on Mudcat... Hillbilly Bobert, Fortunato, C-Flat, Greg Stephens and this guy named Khandu. And too many others to list... I'm not sure whether the name is from Kipling... Khandu, the Jungle boy, or it's an attitude. And not to forget old friends like Art Thieme...

That's not even getting warmed up..

Jerry

I like all animals wild or tame except armadillos. I like all musical instruments as long as they don't have spit-valves or require three phase 220V circuitry to operate. I liked Edward Abbey a lot and regret that I never got to that tavern in Moab, Utah to drink that beer with him. I like people with open minds and open hearts. I like John Prine, and John McCutcheon, and John McEuen, and John Hartford, and John Fahey, and John Lee Hooker and just about everybody I've ever met named John. I like the feeling that you get when a session hits its groove and everybody gets a big ole shit-eatin' grin on their faces. I like Martin Guitars & Gibson Guitars & Guild Guitars & Santa Cruz Guitars & Collings Guitars & Lowden Guitars & Breedlove Guitars & Gallagher Guitars & Wechter Guitars & even Fender, Dean, Alvarez & Yamaha Guitars. I like The Florida Folk Festival, which is exactly as old as I am, but will, hopefully still be around a long time after I'm not.

I also like the New Mudcat except for when it goes down and you have to use Shorty which doesn't yet have the upgrade so you don't have automatic line breaks and you wind up with something that look like the mess that I just posted above.

Oh the old Khandu was a righteous shmoo
With an eye for the good and the bright
He was known afar for his keen guitar
And his song like a southern night
He had a velvet tone like a night-wind's moan
On the long Mississippi's water
And the way this shmoo could lay down the blues
Would melt Bull Connor's daughter.

Khandu! Khandu! Keep on playin'
Stayin' true
True to you, who can do,
Those things only you khandu!

Warm regards, pal. Me, I love the dappled sun on the patio in a morning, the smell of French Roast, the flavor of a good cigar, the feeling of my best-beloved wife's strong small hand in mine, the sparkle in my daughter's eyes when her love of music wells to the fore, and I truly love the sight of life force asserting itself for freedom, wherever found. I love real communication, when the cards are all on the table and the common truth rears up and sweeps the game, and the light of love in any heart, no matter whose or where it is directed. I love the gracious curves of a well built sloop or ketch lapped with a running sea and a following wind, and the beauty of our gentle womenfolk, god bless 'em all. I love the incredible colors of dawn in Arizona and the tears behind the eyes of a Gauguin maiden. I love lots of things, and I really really love my Martin. By most of all, I think I love my wee lassie Barky and her Mom.

And, boy am I lucky!! What a life, huh?

I like my husband, my children, my grandson, my ex-husband, Amos, my other brother John, Amos' family and John's family, the sound of my husband playing piano, the sound of voices singing a capella, the sound of Amos singing and playing, the sound of my son singing and playing, the sound of water, the ocean, my nieces and nephews, all my dear friends, Boulder creek and an island in Maine. Those are my tops.

A few, a very few, of my favorite things: my Corgi dogs, country life, my Martin guitar, music-in most of its varied forms-sunrises/sunsets, being at the ocean when the night begins to over and the sound of the waves takes on mystery and the water is turned to liquid steel, art-particularly abstract art: Paul Klee, Matisse, my husband's, the friends I really connect with, on whatever level, homegrown cucumbers...not necessarily in that order...

I like sneaking off early from work and catching Squilver, which is where I live, unawares. Especially if the sun is shining - it's quiet, apart from the buzzzard keening occasionally, the dog's asleep on his warm spot and the house is creaking to itself 'cos it doesn't know I'm there.

And I like that first time in late spring when you can actually feel the warmth of the sun on your head.

And I like the smell of bracken.

And I like that feeling when you're steering a boat at night and you can imagine that you are still with the world slipping by beneath you.

And I like seeing my sons, and the role-reversal that is happening when they ring me to see if I'm OK.

And I like the familiarity, and all the little shared signs and signals, when I'm with the right person.

'Why can't it be like this all the time' (Van Morrison)

Frankfurter sandwiches. And I'll join Trevor on the buzzards mewing. They are just coming back to Stoke after a generation or two of being driven back to the hills with poison and gun, and what a pleasure it is to see them re-colonising.(memo to Americans our buzzards arent the same as yours, ours are a soaring kind of hawk, I think yours are more of a vulture type of thing )

Hi, Greg:

We have Mockingbirds up here in New England... they moved up into this area twenty or thirty years ago. We had a pair nesting in a bush right outside our window, and they are a delight to listen to.
Aggressive buggers, too... they'd dive bomb me when I came out the front door, actually slamming in to the top of my head with their claws.. I didn't mind... it was just a pleasure to have them around... saucy birds, like out blue jays over here... birds with an attitude..

Tom T. Hall put it real well in one of his songs when he wrote, "In some of my songs I have casually mentioned, the fact that I like to drink beer..." Well, Tom. T., 'ol Bobert with ya on that one.

Hey, howz about a freshy hit possum on the side of the road? Ummmmm! Few onions, a little garlic...

And howz 'bout the sound of them big boys comin' out of turn 2 down at the local track?

And that smell of cracklin' pine wood burnin' back in the woods where your uncle Wesley is stillin' up some good ol' Wse Ginny moonshine...

Or the sight of an ol' Glory decal in the back window of a Camero...

Or the taste, in the words of Donnie williams.... ahhhh, life's sweet wine....

I am such a hopeless romantic...

Awwwww.

I like... (in no particular order)

...my family, mostly. My parents, grandparents, sister, and her kids, especially.

...Korean food.

...the sounds that come out of a duda (Hungarian bagpipe). No, I don't have one.

...my cats, Lemmy, Gollum, and Eddie.

...good seats at concerts.

...my dear friend, Xy.

...Columbia Heights, Minnesota. Where I'm from, more or less. NE Mpls is alright, too, though it's a little too popular for me, these days.

...Wendy's Classic Single hamburger, onions only.

...the Cedar Cultural Center.

...ayran. A Turkish yogurt drink.

...taking distorted polaroids of my own face.

...many bands, performers, etc. Too numerous, boring to list.

...Duluth, Minnesota. Nice place to relax.

...Goran BregoviƦ soundtracks. (Grr. The last letter in "BregoviƦ" should be a c with a little acute thingee over it. I knew it wouldn't work, heh.)

...not working.

Just being alive! The beauty of the earth laid out before me..

Most things by candlelight.

Old cemeteries.

Pre-Raphaelite paintings.

Trash-picking for treasure. Thrift shops.

The shift of the seasons, fast or slow, loud or silent...the smell of the moist, melting earth and lilacs in spring, the whitehotblue of summer skies and the smell of charcoal-grilled steak and the healing heat of the sun, the dreamy mornings of autumn full of mist and things to do and leaves crunching underfoot, the gleam of snowcrust at night when the moon turns it to sugared ice...

Singing! and listening to other people sing. And I like it when kids sing.

Animals. I love my cats and other peoples' dogs. I like wild animals in the wild.

My friends and chosen family, for letting me be who I am. My birth family for accepting me as I am.

Fruit! Especially local and in season. Apples most of all. Peaches, strawberries, pears, blackberries...

The undersides of silver maples before the rain comes...the way these trees seem to make the sky bigger and more mysterious wherever they congregate.

Brushwood, a folklore center/campsite in western New York.

England's green hills and fairy-tale streets.

Psychedelic and progressive rock from the 60s and 70s including Jethro Tull, the Moody Blues, Jefferson Airplane, Donovan, and many others...

Guinness. Vanilla ice cream. Potato chips. Roast pork. Fresh greens steamed with butter and red wine vinegar and salt and pepper...

Packages in the mail..okay, brown paper packages.
