09 Oct 02 - 02:01 PM (#799631) Subject: BS: SECRET SANTA From: Catherine Jayne Hi So I am doing the secret santa this year. So if anyone wants to take part please PM me with your permanebt mailing address and state which country you are in and whether you are happy or not to send pressies to another country. We need to get this sorted as I have been informed the post can take a long time in the run up to this joyful and Merry (more emphasis on the merry!!) time!! There is a limit of $20 on spending thats around £15 for all us UK catters. It is supposed to be secret so you wont know who you are going to receive a pressie off. Hope it is a much fun as last year!! Cat |

10 Oct 02 - 12:18 AM (#800097) Subject: RE: BS: SECRET SANTA SIGN-UP THREAD From: katlaughing I think we should have a HINTS thread, separate, like we did last year. I don't think we sent all of that info to the coordinator, did we? Seems like a lot more for her to have to consider for matches than is fair. I probably have CRS, but I thought we just sent her our name, mailing addy, and if we'd send to another country or not? Then, whomever drew our name could just go to the hints thread for ideas? kat |

10 Oct 02 - 12:41 AM (#800110) Subject: RE: BS: SECRET SANTA SIGN-UP THREAD From: Stilly River Sage Misophist, obviously you're not a good candidate for the folks-who-are-incurably-cheerful-around-the-holidays program. Why bother, indeed? We can all use some practice trying to understand strangers, trying to anticipate how to give pleasure to people we've never met (within reason. . .). No calling cards to 900 numbers, please. :) I'll involve my kids, teach them about the pleasure of giving, not just of receiving. SRS |

10 Oct 02 - 10:50 AM (#800341) Subject: RE: BS: SECRET SANTA SIGN-UP THREAD From: Fortunato Thanks, catsPHiddle, et al. I had a great time last year and have PMed my info. I also believe in random acts of love and generosity, at holiday time so... Just in case old 'spaw is feeling low, I'm sending him: an autographed picture of me in my knickers with the handcuffs on, I'm smeared with 30 weight motor oil, jumper cables attached (delicacy prevents further detail) and my right foot in a bucket of wet oatmeal. Hee, hee, hee, or is that Ho, ho, ho? cheers, chance |

10 Oct 02 - 01:37 PM (#800477) Subject: RE: BS: SECRET SANTA SIGN-UP THREAD From: SharonA Hey, misophist, why don't you sign up and name your favorite charity? Then your Secret Santa can send them a contribution in your name. Seems like a good reason to "bother"! |
10 Oct 02 - 02:04 PM (#800496) Subject: RE: BS: SECRET SANTA SIGN-UP THREAD From: SharonA By the way, as far as the questionnaire is concerned, I think that the answers should be posted on the Hints thread if one desires to make one's info public, but should not be absolutely required. I think that the hints and jokes passed back and forth between Santas and Santees are more fun for everyone to read when everyone is familiar with the wish-lists on which those hints and jokes are based. Last year's attitude was that if you didn't fill out the questionnaire, you'd better be happy with the present you got! Everyone did seem to be happy... except for those couple of people who did not receive pressies at all. That seems to have been the only problem with last year's exchange. Hopefully we can all make sure that everyone gets his/her gift this year! |

10 Oct 02 - 04:39 PM (#800600) Subject: RE: BS: SECRET SANTA SIGN-UP THREAD From: Burke I liked reading others hints last year as well. If nothing else, it gave me ideas for my list. I see no one has started a hints thread yet. Should we start on now or wait until after Oct. 20 when we actually have names? catsPHiddle, how many have signed up so far? Does anyone know how many there were last year? |

I have to say at the moment it is the 'catters from America that are really getting into the Christmas spirit this year!! Santa's Secretary Cat |
10 Oct 02 - 06:04 PM (#800653) Subject: RE: BS: SECRET SANTA SIGN-UP THREAD From: Genie Sign me up, Stilly. Seems like it could be fun -- and has been for many of you in the past. I'm kinda with Misophist, though, in that giving someone a "gift" of a donation to their favorite charity is a beautiful option, and much preferable to exchanging more "stuff" just for the sake of buying and wrapping presents. Click for related thread: Alternative Gift Market For Christmas Material gifts that have meaning behind them are quite another thing, though (like someone sending you a copy of their new CD or giving a gift that's really tailored for the receiver). So, Misophist, I don't think your comment is contrary to the Christmas spirit -- but neither is the Secret Santa exhange. It's all in the spirit you bring to it. I'm looking forward to doing "Secret Santa" this year (double entendre noted but not intended). Genie ¤:-D |
10 Oct 02 - 06:59 PM (#800693) Subject: RE: BS: SECRET SANTA SIGN-UP THREAD From: CapriUni As for the hints list... sometimes, the recipient doesn't want to give hints... doesn't want to steer the Santa in question in any one direction or another, but wants, instead to be completely surprised. In case this happens to you (as it did with me), dear Santas, I recommend the following: Use the wonderful (and unique, as far as I can tell) Mudcat feature and click on your santee's Mudcat name in any thread it appears. This will bring up a list of all of that person's posts. Reading people's posts, what they talked about last week or last year, can give you a sense of their passions and foibles and wishes. Just a thought... |
10 Oct 02 - 10:42 PM (#800802) Subject: RE: BS: SECRET SANTA SIGN-UP THREAD From: Genie Excellent suggestion, Capri! |
11 Oct 02 - 02:51 AM (#800883) Subject: RE: BS: SECRET SANTA SIGN-UP THREAD From: CapriUni Re: Clicking on a person's name, to find out their Holiday (or just winter) wishes. This is fun, even if you do get hints... For one thing, it might get you into threads you wouldn't have explored otherwise... One suggestion for the hints list: A question on allergies, or other "Please do *not* get me ____" question... I'd hate to send someone a homemade treat, for example, only to have it be something they can't enjoy... |

11 Oct 02 - 04:04 PM (#801326) Subject: RE: BS: SECRET SANTA SIGN-UP THREAD From: Genie Another good point, Capri. Sometimes it's more important to know what a person does NOT want or can NOT use/wear (e.g., no more ties, no fragrances, no pink clothing, no banjo music, etc.) than to have them list what they are wishing for. Not a bad idea to add a Q or two about things to avoid. Genie |

I think it would be best if they were posted on the Hints thread then your secret santa will be able to suss out what pressie to get you. They have helped me to think about who to put each of with. I think the idea is you dump all the names into a hat, bowl, whatever & draw. You should not to try to match certain individuals anymore than we should be requesting certain Santee's. The Randomness is part of the fun. To comply with the "only in my country" requests, the UK for instance, put all UK Santee's names together. Draw names for the Santas who have request a UK Santee. Then take the leftover names & combine them with the ones left from US, Oz, etc. |
15 Oct 02 - 12:16 PM (#803632) Subject: RE: BS: SECRET SANTA SIGN-UP THREAD From: Catherine Jayne Burke....don't worry it is all in hand.
