I'm glad to hear that the Americans are keeping it going. Here in UK, which is where it started after all, it's being strangled out of existence by over-regulation and by reluctance of insurance companies to give cover due to the modern propensity of people to sue each other. So now it's big commercial displays or nothing. Enjoy !!!

What exactly is to celebrate in the death by torture of a man who had the misfortune to be used as a catspaw by the then anti-Catholic state? Now if you were the celebrate the original bon-fire night of St John's Eve.

Conrad is the Internet's most notorious Orange bigot, and he celebrates the persecution of Irish Catholics in particular anywhere people let him get away with it. Try asking about him on the Irish and Celtic music newsgroups and lists sometime, and see what response you get.

From: GUEST,cbladey@bcpl.net

Actually we do not celebrate the death of any one. We celebrate the preservation of king and parliament. At our celebration we even pause for a moment to consider the bravery of the plotters. (we try to suit every interest-most of those in attendance are catholics.) The plot was not just a plot of English Citizens It was a part of the Counter Reformation -a political movement on the part of a political pope to dominate England. Fortunately by 1605 English Nationalism was sufficiently developed to be able to reject foreign domination. The rising in the midlands which was the centerpiece of the entire plot failed miserably rejected by the ordinary people.

Actually we do not celebrate the persecution of Irish catholics or any other. We celebrate the fact that english catholics and representatives of the pope failed to torture maim and kill english citizens and bring down the government in favor of a catholic state. Let us be clear here who the persecutors were- they were clearly all catholic.

The separation of church and state and freedom from dominance by foreign powers is at the center of the celebration.
This is a problem that we have today with some of the "religious"

Father Henry Garnet chief jesuit of england at the time knew all about the plot. As an english citizen his first obligation was to save life and limb and turn in the plotters. He did not do this. Instead he deferred to the opinion of the pope.

The same is true today. We in the USA have seen the Catholic "religious" fail to act lawfully as citizens of the USA. Those knowing about the sex crimes did not do their duty and turn the offenders in or remove them from service. Clearly catholic "religious" still think they are above the law of our country. This is the disturbing aspect of the recent scandals. Much more disturbing than the crimes themselves. Even recently the catholic administrators, bishops and cardinals when coming up with a plan to bring sex offenders to justice could not simply follow the law and implement it. Quite the contrary- they first had to get the ok of the pope. One should not have to have the permission of any other party to be a law abiding citizen.

We must continue to remember what happened in 1605.
Nations have recently seen their governments brought down by the pope.
While I would agree with that action (vs. east block) I do not think it is legitimate or permissable for a religious leader to bring down any state. We are just lucky that the pope did not target us!

As we can see clearly the us bishops would have a hard time deciding wether to support church or country.

Our Web Page resources are here for anyone interested in learning of the history of the plot and celebration.

BTw there Guest, several of us have beaten the crap out of Conrad around here on numerous occasions. Sadly, we do have an open membership and some people around the joint are real champions of "poor Conrad" because he posts some songs. I now limit myself to telling him to Fawke himself instead of referring to him as the world's #1 super pissant and an unmitigated cocksucker of major proportion, capable of sucking the shit out of a hippo's ass.

You might do better to just ignore him, rather than abuse him. He very much enjoys the abuse.

BTW, the other forums where he once posted were also open, none required membership. He was shunned, and eventually gave it up. He has now taken to roosting here, as the membership is so easily trolled. People like Conrad always gravitate to those of like kind...

There is no mention this year by Conrad or anyone else in the Usenet folk music forums of celebrating the 12th of July or Guy Fawkes.

Public shunning of bigots is a tactic some Mudcat members might like to explore a little further. It makes for a much more pleasant internet chat experience.

Well! I must be getting old and slipping....must do something about that.
By the way Guest....might be fun if you signed your attacks.
or that is to say abuse....

No bigots here just honest historians connecting the dots.
Sorry.....some times people you want to like do bad things.
Too bad people did not save their children from those they trusted
without reason. Ignoring the facts is perhaps a trait of certain groups.
They are identified by their reaction to every observation with the cry of Biggotry....tisk tisk...

That time of year again!
