Ist jemand da von deutschland?   I have an unexpected chance to visit Berlin briefly in the beginning of November. Is there such thing as a Berlin folk scene? Any tips most welcome.

folk dance in Berlin, events in November

Irish pubs in Berlin

When you are there, buy Zitty, the weekly (biweekly?) magazine with all the music.

Enjoy

Wolfgang (hoping that Susanne sees this thread; she knows more)

Sorry, no, Fingerbuster, and I doubt there is one. Too many different languages.

For Germany, Folker is a good start with a fine links sections.

Many thanks to all. The links have already given me some good leads.

'Club Voltaire' and 'Die Wabe', close together in former East Berlin, are a good address for folk and singer/songwriters. Can't lay my hands on the address right now, though. (There may be dates in the Folker! gig list.) Give me till the weekend, please.
Wolfgang: How's life? Drop me a line when you can!

Hello Dermod,

I don`t have any specific gigs at hand, but you might look for bands like Midnight Court, Inish, An Tain, Irish Weavers (not to be mixed up with the irish band with the same name), Eddy & Marty, Robbie and Gueno, Flinkfinger, Max McColgan & Friends, David Cambrin & Friends, Norland Wind, Spirit Level (all Irish),Kelpie (Irish + Scandinavian), Hot String Quintet (Bluegrass & Swing), Colinda (Cajun) and and and ...(apologies to those I forgot to tell).
The nicer Pubs are the Celtic Cottage (has a website with schedule + produced two CDs with local musicians) Markelstrasse in Steglitz, Molly Mallones, Karl-Marx-Strasse in Neukoelln, Music Pub, Nordufer in Wedding, Shannon Apostel-Paulus-Strasse in Schöneberg. There might be an Irish session at the Emerald Isle in Kreuzberg (havent been there for a long time) on Thursday evenings and sommetimes one on Fridays al the Blarney (Methfesselstrasse in Kreuzberg).
If you post the exact dates I might give some more specific recommendations. Since I am not available tomorrow until Sunday, you might have to refresh this thread.
All the best
Ernest

Thanks again for these really useful tips. I think I'll be all right now. Amazing, because I didn't think any respons was likely.

Best wishes - Dermod.

"The "Irish Pub" in the Europa Center is to be avoided. They have music, but IMHO it's the "McPaddy" variety. How many times can you hear "The Irish Rover" in one night? There are (were, anyway) a couple of good places in Kreuzberg (names washed away in a river of beer) w/ good, sincere folk music. Check in Mitte/Prenzelb'g- that seems to be where a lot of the nightlife is migrating in the "new" Berlin. Also check "Zitty" (magazine that lists the happenings in Berlin) for inspiration. Viel Spass.

Club Voltaire and Wabe are to be found at Danziger Strasse (the former Dimitroffstrasse) 101, 10405 Berlin. Phone 030 / 424 02 525 (Wabe). Enjoy your stay!
