Lyr. Add: RIDIN' IN A RAILROAD KEER

Suke Sattinet was a comely ga',
And loved her parents dear,
Till she met Sim Jim, the miller's son,
A ridin' in a railroad keer.
Slim Jim's dad's house was top of the hill,
Suke Sattinet she lived near;
'Twas, going to the mill,
She met Slim Jim, a ridin' in a railroad keer.
'Twas, going to the mill,
She met Slim Jim, a ridin' in a railroad keer.

He winked at Sal, and she looked sly:
Then called her his duck and dear!
Says Jim: Will you have me?
Says Suke: I will. -- ridin' in a railroad keer.
But, as they neared the old man's house,
Jim began to shake with fear,
And he lost all the courage he had before,
Ridin' in a railroad keer.
And he lost all the courage he had before,
Ridin' in a railroad keer.

When they got to the house, he took off his cap,
Then bowed and scraped so queer:
Says he: Your daughter promised to be mine,
Ridin' in a railroad keer.
The old man took his gun from the shelf,
Says he: Slim Jim.. just clear,
Or I'll blow you so high, you'll never come down,
Ridin' in a railroad keer.
Or I'll blow you so high, you'll never come down,
Ridin' in a railroad keer.

May we never make matrimony a matter of money.
Who'd marry an old maid of forty?
Take her for the rest of his life?
Not I; for, the boys that are naughty,
Would call her my mother-- no. wife.

Notes: Hope this helps.

PLEASE explain yourself Sorcha....what does your posting mean?

Sincerely,
Gargoyle

If you post lyrics, please put ADD and the song title in the message title so the harvesters can find it. If somebody posts lyrics and forgets to change the thread title, it helps if you do it for them in a subsequesnt message.
Thanks.

Thanks everyone for the help. I had search Levy but somehow had missed it. Maybe Car rather than Kerr confused the search. Too bad two of the links are broken. Maybe the sheets I did get will give an idea of the tune.
Does anyone know if anything, any song that we all might know is used with this tune?
I am looking for it for an 1870s parody called "I belong to the fire BRigade"

Is THIS the song?

Yes, Masato - but there's another Cariboo song to the same tune - "Young Ted Brown". The song was "sung by Mr. John Hudson at tghe Theatre Royal, Barkerville, on New Year's Eve, 1867." Maybe it's that my friend Richard is looking for.

Just re-read the thread - my mistake, it WAS "I Belong to the Fire Brigade" that Richard was looking for.

Hi Jon;

Should have thought to ask you! What I'm looking for is the tune or sheet music. I have words, of course, to both songs, but wanted to find some original sheet music.
The links on the Levy site are broken. I have notified them and likely they will be fixed soon.

Jon, I'm also looking on another thread, for the music to "The Mousetrap Man"--also used for a couple of Cariboo songs. Have you ever come across it.?

Cheers

How about The City of New Orleans?

Cohen, Norm, The Long Steel Rail, Chap. 3, "Railroad March" to "City of New Orleans," University Illinois, 1981, p 46.

"Another early courting song from the 1850s that appeared in several songsters and on broadsides was "Ridin' in a Rail Road Keer" (a broadside version is reproduced in this book):…

"Already by the 1840s the railroad was serving as an allegorical device in songs and poems….

"These early pieces have left no permanent mark on oral tradition. Whether they were at one time folksongs, we don't know; there is no evidence of it. It is probable that some of them, or similar pieces, did circulate in oral tradition for a time. In general, our knowledge of native American folksong prior to the Civil War is slender indeed…."

Gargoyle

Sorry I can't help you, Richard. You're in the best forum, tho - if these guys at Mudcat don't know where to find the music, I suspect you're SOL. Good luck, eh? Jon

The Levy site is working. A better printed copy comes through by saving the jpg and then cleaning it up and enlarging in photoshop.

A somewhat catchy tune.

In their address header - you will notice there are 5 pages.

The final reference code is one to five. Hand type in the numbers 1,2,3,4,5 for the URL.

Garghoyle;

Thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately I still get either the cover or a broken link for pages 1 and 3. Maybe they will fix it this week.

Thanks

Richard
