26 Oct 02 - 06:31 AM (#811786) Subject: BS: chat? threads suggestion From: JudeL A number of threads recently have been started/raised/refreshed with the sole purpose of checking to see who's about and if anyone wants to chat. I can understand this, as sometimes you log on and there's no one logged on in the chatroom and there seems precious little point in entering the chatroom when there's no one else there. BUT since all these threads take up space and I (and probably others) are reluctant to either start up or post threads that are only to indicate that we are about at a particular time perhaps a better idea would be to have a "come to chat" permathread who'se only purpose is to say come chat, and that Max, Joe or elves can keep chopping so that it doesn't get big & take up space. It could be clearly marked as not a place to post anything you may want later as it is for temporary/ ephemeral posts which will be deleted within a very short time. I don't know how difficult this would be to set up or monitor or even if the deleting bit could be done automatically at set intervals it is as I said just a suggestion. But I'd be interested in hearing if it could be done and what others think. |
26 Oct 02 - 06:49 AM (#811791) Subject: RE: BS: chat? threads suggestion From: Snuffy I sometimes go in the chatroom when there's nobody there, but continue reading threads in a separate browser window at the same time. If people see that there is someone there, they're more likely to come in. Sometimes it takes 20-30 minutes; sometimes you'll have 5 people in a couple of minutes. All without posting to an invitation thread. WassaiL! V |
26 Oct 02 - 06:59 AM (#811793) Subject: RE: BS: chat? threads suggestion From: JudeL I know various people say they've managed to open more than one browser window at the same time and both log onto chat and read threads at the same time but each time I've tried to do that the whole thing has crashed on me and either everythings locked up, I'm bounced out of mudcat or told my connection's lost and I need to log back onto the net. Now while this may be something to do with my set up either in terms of my system or the way I connect to the net and judging by the number of want to chat type threads that have been appearing I doubt if I'm the only one for whom this is so, and for us a perma thread would make sense. |
26 Oct 02 - 01:23 PM (#811906) Subject: RE: BS: chat? threads suggestion From: Uncle_DaveO I was wondering about that too, and when I saw your post I went to the desktop and re-clicked Netscape, got to Mudcat (my homepage), and accessed whatever the top thread was. Then I was able to switch between this thread and that one. No problem. Now it's possible that with a dial-up connection I couldn't do this; I don't know. I have DSL. Dave Oesterreich |

07 Nov 02 - 07:40 PM (#821167) Subject: RE: BS: chat? threads suggestion From: JudeL it only seems to work for me if I'm using two different sites eg shorty for the chat then load the main forum on ragtime, if I try to do both on the same base address it just overwrites one on the other |
