On the top of my stack of music to listen to is the "Money for Nothing" CD by Dire Straits, since Alison happened to mention them the other day. I am listening to a fourty+ year old recording of Brendan Behan singing the folksongs of Ireland a cappella. He has obviously been into the crather as he was making the recording, and he sings "The Aul Triangle" on the tape. It is over an hour of him telling stories and singing songs. Very unstructured. The poor quality of the recording adds to the charm. Which reminds me of a story about the Behan's, if you would all be so kind as to indulge me. I heard the story from Liam Tiernan (one of the founders of Barleycorn) when he was last in my precincts. Apparently he was very close to the Behan's. He tells the story of how Stephen Behan, who believe or not really enjoyed a proper jar of the old dark stuff, was cautioned by his lovely wife, Aul Katch (Old Kate for my english speaking friends), not to spend the day in the pub as she wanted him to dig the garden for planting. Then off she went to work. She wasn't gone 15 minutes, and Stephen was in the Public House enjoying a jar of the heavy. Next thing he knew, most of the day was gone by and he hadn't put the spade to the first shovel of dirt. Now Aul Katch's temper was legendary and he did not want to face her after her warning him that very morning. So he hit on the following idea. He placed an anonymous call to the RIC barracks and informed them that the IRA had a cache of arms buried behind a house in the neighborhood. Then he gave them his address. The lore is that within 20 minutes they pulled up and dug ferociously for the arms, found nothing and left. When the good woman got home, she was pleasantly surprised to find Stephen putting the finishing touches on the sod. The last one was Skunk Anansie: Stoosh (a sort of punky gutsy rock band with attitude and a sense of social justice), Kavisha Mazzella: Mermaids in the Well (an Australian/Italian/Bulgarian(?) woman with an amazing voice and a wonderful mix of ethnic styles), some African music, some Moroccan music, some flamenco music, some classical music (Bobby McFerrin: Paper Music, Vivaldi: Four Seasons) and to top it all off a really incredible techno-percussion group called Leftfield, which my boyfriend won't even listen to because it's techno. From: Dale Rose Well, the old CD player currently has two by Ian and Sylvia ~~ Northern Journey and Four Strong Winds, Bascom Lamar Lunsford, the Buckhannon Brothers of St. Louis, and Songs of the Civil War in it. Clean Living is (or rather was) on the turntable, and the cassette player has Karen Kraft and The Dixie Darlin's of Mt. View, AR in it. But really, lately I have been listening mostly to old time music on the internet from Phil and Gaye Johnson, especially the show with David Holt. |

It contains folk and rock recordings from the 50's through the 90's and country and blues form the 20's on. There's a little bit of bluegrass, some Australian bushbands, some maritime, Edith Piaf's greatest hits, and a recording of Scott Joplin rags. I most often set it for random play so I don't know what is coming next. It's like a radio station with an infinite playlist and no disk jockey. |

The last tape I listened to was The Deseret String Band (local, but I believe they are known somewhat outside of Utah) and Smoky Mountain Hymns, a compilation of hymns performed on hand crafted instruments: banjo, dulcimers (both kinds), mandolin, guitar, etc. The next tape is one Murray sent me to test my lyric-interpreting ear: Charley Patton, King of the Delta Blues. (thanks, Murray). I guess he was the king before Robert Johnson was. P.S. Big Mick, great story. (and all the tunes have a real story of how he learned them and such!) The last 33 1/3's were "Yehudi Menuhin meets Ravi Shankar" and "Ballads of Alaska" by 'Uncle Bob' Pavitt, featuring a sterling rendition of "When the Iceworms Nest Again" next in line are "Introducing the Beers Family" which I found in a 2nd hand store, and four 10" LP's of Richard Dyer-Bennet!!.. |

I'll look tomorrow and then when I get home. "Master Of The Sheepfold" , as I was told, was found in Maine by Bill Bonyun. He sang it to Susan Richardson who took it to the New York Pinewoods folk camp in Massachusetts. Jerry Epstein, at Pinewoods, taught it to me. Driving back to Chicago after Pinewoods that summer I stopped to hang out with my old Chicago friend, Cindy Mangsen, who then lived near Albany, New York. I showed that to her then for the first time. Later I changed the language of the song from the very heavy Afrom-American dialect I'd learned it in----"Massa Ob De Sheepfold" became "Master Of The Sheepfold". I think it's now twice as beautiful as it was before. And Cindy & Anne make it sound like an angel chorus! From: Nora Yes Grubby I have heard James Keelaghan live several times and will go put the CD on in a minute, just as soon as Richard Thompson You Me Us is over. I heard his record on the radio in Northern Minnesota, and then saw him live at the Winnipeg Folk Festival a few years back. I was really looking forward to his mainstage performance -- sort of the grand ending to a glorious festival -- following his set, he was to lead the assembled crowd in a bunch of tunes, including my favorite, Mary Ellen Carter. However, the nasty weather that had been threatening finally broke and he cut his set short and sent us all scurrying back to our campsites. Thunderstorms and tornadoes in Manitoba are not to be trifled with. One of the sound towers was knocked over. I saw him most recently in North Carolina at a Holiday Inn (!) on stage with a bar on the far side of the stage with NASCAR racing playing audibly throughout. He was a good sport about it. Nora |

There is Chuck Brodsky's "A Fingerpainter's Mural." He's a current singer/songwriter with a sense of humor and also an affection for baseball. I plan to learn his song "Blow 'Em Away," a song about roadrage that is politically incorrect. "I rolled down the window, took out my pistol, and I blew 'em away." I listen to many current singer/songwriter's, the troubadours of today who create the folksongs of tomorrow. Next to that on the carousel is Robert Johnson's "The Complete Recordings." Maybe I'll learn something by aural osmosis. I am too embarassed by my guitar playing to try to take on any of these classics. "Wake Up Dead Man," a collection of 'Black convict work songs from Texas Prisons." Again, a renewed interest of mine. Perhaps I will learn one of these as well. And finally, my 21 year-old son has left a copy of Everclear's self-named CD. I know I wasn't listening to that. Roger in Baltimore

Nice stuff on fiddle, guitar, mandolin, hammered dulcimer, whistle, pipes (possibly Scottish smallpipes?), bohran. Nice Celtic weather, also - cloudy, breezy, cold, threatening rain. Next up: a tape of Tenpenny, another local band that plays Irish/Celtic trad music. |

The Grace Family cover his mine song, and it's one of my favorite. I went to put on Outright Bold Face Lies, but ended up with "That's the Ticket" We should start a thread of the singing takes me back... Whenever I hear the record I go back to the North Country Folk Festival in Ironwood. A short lived but awesome festival. Camping on Little Girls Point in July in a tent with temperatures in the 40's and Lake Superior churning iron red. But Art, why did you perform the Craig Johnson songs backwards on the record? |

The bad news is she also swiped my Dazed and Confused CD with oh, such wonderful groups on it as Alice Cooper, Foghat, Lyrnyd Skyrnrd and Black Sabbath. Hey, what can I say? I wanted some DANCE music, and now she's checked out the video of it which is full of casual kid cruelty (to each other), drugs and **** words. But yes, the early Beatles in particular seem to be very popular with the young teen set today. She's got my anniversary compilation Beatles CDs in her room and I have to keep asking for them back. Armstrong and Van Ronk singing (separately), with Rosselson also playing on Armstrong's songs. They recorded it in Vancouver, I think originally produced by Festival Records. Great straight-forward singing and basic accompaniment. Armstrong and Van Ronk's voices and styles suit Brecht. Van Ronk: " ... and if someone gets kicked, that will be you." Armstrong: "...my son, if you think I brought you into the world so painfully to have you lie under it so meekly and ask for more ..." Van Ronk's version of Mack the Knife doesn't sound much like Bobby Darrin, or whoever it was did the top-40 version in the 60s. |

I drop in to this topic just to listen, and share everyone elses fun, but the northern michigan topics brought back some recollections. North Country folk fest, early eighties, at Gogebic comm. college. Folk dancing at the Armory in town....also... reference harpgirl to hanging with Linda Siglin...I logged more miles than anyone but the performers...getting to the Ark...and the folk festival...missed the first two. Used to live in a cultural wasteland...now if you are in northeast Michigan in the winter, check out the monthly events put on by the Corsair Trail ski counsel, held Nov.-Mar. in the Catholic church social hall in Tawas City. Art, I wish you well, didn't know of your condition, do you still have that dog...the one that was so good that when he was rabbit hunting, he got on two tracks, so he split himself in half and caught both of 'em? |

My seven year old wants to hear it over and over and over. The song about the imaginary monsters that kids see is excellent, and the "cover" of the girl scout tune of "God Bless my Underwear" gets many requests of AGAIN, again and again. He's from LaCrosse, and played on recent Bill Miller recordings. His tune of "what you goin do with the babysitter" sung to the tune of "what you goin do with a drunken sailor" is excellent, but I think he wimped out and didn't put it on his CD, TOO Politically correct. Heck half the folk songs handed down wouldn't make it past the PC crowd. Hey Art, thanks for Grand Marais. You're taxing my memory for the melody now.

Piloting the Julia Belle Swain was like riding an elephant---at least that's what it reminded me of---slow & ponderous yet majestic and wonderfully imposing! From: northfolk I got the wanderlust a few years ago and took the Julia Belle Swain, bingo cruise, I wasn't ahold of the tiller, and didn't see a barge with a ratchet-bar, it's all hydraulic now. I did spend a couple hours in the pilot house. They were that tourist friendly. Gives you a great feel and appreciation of the river, and how that part of our history might have been. On the other hand, bucolic it ain't. They ought to ban jet-ski's from operating in the same hemisphere as a sternwheeler. Right now I'm listening to Billy Bragg, Mermaid Avenue. The jury is still out, but to paraphrase the blues guys, they started out on billy bragg,(rock and roll) and then moved on to the harder stuff. |

From: Big Mick Hey northfolk, I work and perform mostly in West and Central Michigan, with the occasional gig in SE Michigan (Detroit)area and once or twice a year on Beaver Island at the Shamrock. That is with my group "The Conklin Ceili Band" (the name is a story in itself) which obviously is an Irish group. I also do the occasional labor gig where I sing the music that helped define our movement as well as the music of the struggles faced by the everyday working person. After over 20 years in the movement, I have about a million stories in my head that I want to set to music, but I am just learning how to craft a lyric.
