Peg to UK: music doings in January?

Subject: BS: Peg to UK: music doings in January?
From: Peg

hello all;

I will be in England from January 14th through the 27th! I am attending a conference in London on the 26th (maybe the 25th, too) but other than that, my itinerary is fairly open. I plan to spend several days in Glastonbury, and hopefully near Salisbury/Avebury, and also Oxford/Banbury (not necessarily in that order). Any Mudcatters know of any musical doings in any of these areas? I am hoping to go to the Cecil Sharp house on Tuesday the 24th if Micca might be willing to escort me! Depending on weather, I might do some hiking, too and stone circle visiting.

As always, offers of couch/floor space are happily accepted and will be rewarded with pints of beer and songs...and an open invitation to any Boston visitors to stay in my spare room!

If you have noticed a trend, yes, it's true I am trvaelling to the UK a lot lately, and also seeking a way to move to the UK on a temporary or even permanant basis. I have been applying for teaching posts but so far no luck...though I will persevere (hence all my academic activities in England, this conference will be my third in the UK since last summer). If I had business capital I would open an internet cafe in Glastonbury which needs one desperately. Hmm, maybe I should just hunt for a chap amenable to a Green Card marriage? ;`)

Oh, god, just kidding about that one.

Peg

thanks Morty! I wil PM you.

And you are welcome here; ya know we DO have a pretty hopping Irish sessiun scene in this town...

Very sadly, however, the Boston Folk and Traditional Singers' Club has been cancelled indefinitely...at least that's what the website says, I can't get a human answer from anyone.

thanks Micca; you rule! Now when are we getting you and yours in Boston, hmmm?

I arrive VERY early Tuesday morning after an overnight flight; I reckon a short nap and some fine pub grub (drinks on me) will fortify me for a night of music! Can't wait to see Cecil's house and maybe will prepare some songs from his book in honour of the occasion...

will PM you the particulars...

Bugger the south west visit the "other" home of mudcat i.e. Hull plenty of music around here and I'm sure one of us will put you up - I will for a start - you might also consider applying for teaching jobs in this area they are desperate and were offering free housing as an incentive not so long ago in the hope of attracting good quality teachers to the area.

Leadfingers: what night is the sessiun at the MIll in Banbury? I would try to have my visit coincide with that...and which place in Oxford?

thanks smallpiper, for your offers! LOL...

re: teaching needs, yes it is true that many incentives are being offered for what we'd call "secondary" or "Primary" teachers. I teach college level and do not have certification to teach kids; then again in the UK I would probably have to undergo specific certification...I did look into this not long ago, through an agency that was interviewing in Boston, but they never answered my email. Free housing is a nice incentive all right...

Leadfingers, thanks for the tip; maybe I will make it to Banbury by that first Wednesday night the 15th, or maybe the following one, the 22nd.

Now, now, Mary and smallpiper: the whole point of a Green Card marriage is that it is NOT romantic!

Peg,

I teach in a Further Education College in Norwich. There is an organisation called the Association of Colleges which represents all the Further Education Colleges and you can mail them at AOC Enquiries They might have either a centralised vacancy list or at least some contact points for the individual colleges.

I do know that we are permantly looking for staff, nut I don't know about subject areas though.

Hope this helps
Jon

this is great, thanks for all of the tips! Mooman, would love to come to Belgium some day but it probably will not happen on this trip...it is my third time to England in under a year and so I need to keep it frugal...

Mr. Furrow/Jon, I was in Norwich recently at the University of East Anglia for a conference. I am actually applying to a fellowship there but probably will not get it. I will check out that link.

Dear Peg,

I you do get up 'ull way you will have the undoubted pleasure of meeting Smallpliers, jOhn from 9Hull and a large concentration of other UK 'Catters, some of whom but by no means all, I am prepared to personally vouch for as being members of the species Homo sapiens L.. You will also be able to see Punch the Horse not performing somewhere.

Please beware of Skipjack K8 for your own personal safety. I'm sure Eric the Viking will back me on this.

All the best

Forget Smallpiper, and marry ME, Peg. My pipes are slightly larger (uillean) and I warm to your posts. And if adult education is any good to you, I'll take soundings around Sherwood Forest.

Guy, I really, really tried to get up to Ripon/Harrogate to meet you (and Roger Knowles). Just couldn't be done in the end, so come back soon!

Ha Fionn fighting talk then so can you compete with a set of Highland War pipes for volume? You might have a greater range but, by God, I beat you hands down on intensity (or is that insensitvity.

I think that jOhn has a certificate that declares him a member of the genus homo sapiens - however I can't vouch for oaklet!

hmmm...all these men whipping out their pipes and comparing size. Not sure I am safe in Hull. But I'll give anything a try. Beer and songs are about all I am up for, but that's enough, right? Any good local cider in the area? That has been my drink of choice lately. Tried some Kingfisher in Norwich and loved it.

Adult ed. teaching will definitely be something I look into if I end up moving over there without a job or working permit in hand yet...this is all a pipe dream at the moment. I want to open an internet cafe in Glastonbury but need an investor! (heh don't we all!) Until the day, I am still a loving visitor and tourist...
