There is a ship and she sails the sea
she's loaded deep as deep can be

The Water is Wide

If you were to type (for instance) There is a ship and she sails the sea into the new Lyrics & Knowledge Search box at the top of the main Forum page, the search engine would find it for you immediately.

I should also have mentioned that, having found the title, you can now do a search for The Water is Wide and discover more about the song than you probably ever wanted to know. Bear in mind, though, that some of the information may be misinformation. A lot of people seem to imagine that it's an Irish song, for instance.

How does this new Mudcat come up with all those threads? This thread hasn't yet picked up all the Water is Wide and Waly Waly threads we have here.

I think that Joe and Jeff add them manually.

Ah! I'd been thinking 'twas a magic that appeared shortly after something shows up.

Thanks guys for all that hard work.

Title: The Golden Vanity

Here is how a friend of mine recorded it sometime in the 50's:

There once was a ship sailed over the sea, sailing o'er the lonesome low
There once was a ship sailed over the sea, she went by the name of the Grean Willow Tree

Chorus:
A sailin' in the lowlands lonesome, low
A sailin' in the lonesome sea.

She wasn't to sail too long on the sea, sailin o'er the lonesome low
She wasn't to sail too long at sea, when she was overtook by the Turkish Revile

Chorus

On the bridge the cap'n rung his hands, crying o'er the lonesome low
On the bridge the cap'n rung his hands and said "I wish I had a man
Who sink 'em in the lowland lonesome low
a' sink 'em in the lonesome low!

"Sir!" says the cabin boy what's for me?" O'er the lonesome low
"Sir!" sais the cabin boy "what's for me, were I to undo the Turkish Reville?

Chorus

"Oh! Young cabin boy I'll give to thee" o'er the lonesome low
"Oh, young cabin boy I'll give to thee, thirty thousand gineas (sp?) and my daughter, Anna Lee
To sink 'em in the lowland, lonesome low
an' sink 'em in the lonesome sea!

Here is the rest. I hit the key too early

Then over went the cabin boy and went right to work
Over the lonesome low!
Over went the cabin boy and went right to work-he bored nine holes and bord them in a jerk
And sunk 'em in the lowland lonesome low,
sunk 'em in the lonesome low!

Say!" cried the cabin boy "bring me aboard!"
Oh! The lonesome low!
Say!" Cried the cabin boy "bring me aboard! And kindly prove as good as your word!

Chorus

"No" sais the captain "you'll not come aboard" Oh the lonesome low!
"No!" sais the captain "ypu'll not come aboard! And neither I'll be as true as my word!"

Chorus

"Were it not for the reverence I had to your men"
Oh, the lonesome low!
"Were it not for the reverence I had to your men, I'd do unto yours as I did unto them!"

Chorus

Oh, no--wait; you've got 2 songs going here!

The first one is "The Water is Wide" --
"The water is wide, I cannot cross o'er.
Neither have I wings to fly,
Give me a boat that can carry two,
And both shall row, my love and I." etc., etc.
A slow, smooth, and lovely song...

The second is "The Golden Vanity"
(much more lively & rollicking than the first)
...and you've posted most of the lyrics to that one!

They're both great songs, and both talk about a ship--but they're really quite different! I'd never noticed the similarity in lyrics 'till now, because the melodies/stories behind the lyrics are so different.

It's worth checking out both if you don't know them.
Nearly every folk group from the 60's has a version of "The Golden Vanity" recorded; I know Peter, Paul, & Mary have a recording of both--but they 'fixed' the lyrics on both, too. Still good songs, and pleasant to listen to, but not the original lyrics, if that's what you want.

DEnise,

"The Golden Vanity" lively and rollicking? I find it rather a poignant song play it rather slow! (;>)

Well, I've heard it recorded in a pretty 'zippy' style--but I think it's sad, too, and can understand why you'd play it slowly! (I've never performed it, myself, except at song jams when it comes up...)

I think it's generally done faster than "The Water is Wide," though, and they are definitely two different songs with quite different stories to tell.

And I still like 'em both...

...but, uh, Dave, we give up. Who *is* Joan Boaz? ;^)

There is a ship, and she sails the sea,
She's loaded deep as deep can be,
But not so deep as the love I'm in
I know not whether I sink or swim.

One of the many 'floating verses ' of Waly,Waly.

I prefer the Burl Ives version of Golden Vanity.
