The tune, of course is the same as "Little Old Sod Shanty", and was written by George Washington Hayes in 1871. The origin of the words is lost in tradition. About a guy in the depression who was able to put food on the table, but didn't have to like it.

Bluegrassers know this as an old Dillard's tune from the 60's, and folkies know it as "The Jolly Miller." It was first published in 1883 as a party dance, although no one seems to know the dance anymore!

This is great...but... It isn't me. It's Woodchucks' Revenge, which is three of us - two 'Catters and the spouse of one of them; and it's the spouse singing the lead. And the song was written by our daughter. So it shouldn't be my name on it.

How do I fix the billing?

The Creek is a song I wrote to honor the lives of 2 very important women in Florida literary history --Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, Pulitzer Prize winning author of The Yearling and many short stories which were sketches of Florida Cracker life -- and Marjory Stoneman Douglas, chronicler and protectorr of the Everglades, author of "River of Grass". It was selected Best New Florida Song in 1999 by the Will McLean Foundation, used for soundtrack in an Australian film, selected for a Florida Songwriter's Sampler CD, and featured on The History Channel UK web site. But mot importantly, it features the flute playing of my wonderful wife, (along with the rest of my band, The Ashley Gang)...Looks like I'm in great company! Thanks Amos.

oooh, I like being an orchid! Sally Free and Easy was written by Cyril Tawney as most people know and I am accompanied by my X2B,Steve Messenger who also mixed and arranged this version of the song.

"Maxie's Mudcat Blues" was conceived in the HearMe (old PalTalk) song swap room Mudcatters had on the internet. It continues to amaze most of us, that we can hear acoustic musicians from around the globe, taking turns sharing their tunes...one at a time...live.

We thought how much fun it would be, if we had the technology, to sing the same song, somehow, at the same time and give it to Max as a "thank-you for Mudcats" present.

There were many Mudcatters from around the globe who wanted to participate (initially from 15 different countries), but a combination of life, logistical and computor problems prevented it. Our final result was given to Max during his Birthday Radio Show in 2001.

The tune we used is "Fishin Blues" made popular by Taj Mahal. (A search in our database shows the song also recorded by Henry Thomas in 1928.)

Paul did the HARD work, which included recording a master track on guitar to set the rythym, and then mixing the sound files together when he received them.

And let me add that the burning light who kept the ball rolling throughout the above process was just hiding her light under a bushel, or whatever it is that Night owls hide thier lights under!!   Wouldn't have gotten through to completion withouther!

It was Big Mick's writing that lies behind the inclusion of another song on this CD -- "The Parting Glass". He sang it to a dear friend in the hospital, who passed on. It was perhaps the last communication he and Mick shared before his dying. The poignancy and compassion that comes through in Mick's story compelled me to insist he include this rendition of The Parting Glass in the songs he sent in for the CD. I was adamant, and as usual, Big Mick came through.

William Cole lists this as an Irish song. It was well known in both Ireland and Scotland. Before Auld Lange Syne, this song was the most popular parting song in Scotland. It appears in Herd's Scots Songs and in the Scots Musical Museum (1803/4). It was printed on broadsides as early as 1770* and saw a resurgence of popularity in the late 1800s. Several copies of these broadsides can be found at the Bodleian Library.
The tune appears as early as the 1600s - in the Skene Manuscript and in the Guthrie Manuscript (c 1675). It is also in Playford's Original Scots Tunes (1700).**
The song is also known as Good Night and Joy Be With You All.
Sam Henry collected The Parting Glass in Ireland in 1938. In Folksongs of Britain and Ireland, Peter Kennedy relates it to the Manx song Te Traa Goll Thie (It's Time to Go Home).

"The Blacksmith" is taken from the CD "I Lie Awake" by Greenhouse, the band I've had the pleasure (and pain) to nourish for twelve years.

The vocalist is Patricia Casey (also playing whistle), the percussionist is Tony Blake, and I play guitar and octave mandolin.

The CD is on Jackalope Records, a tiny roots-oriented label based in Santa Rosa, CA.
