15 Nov 02 - 08:59 PM (#827507) Subject: November Songs From: mmb A local news announcer says we should expect potentially severe changes in our weather this weekend - hopefully nothing like last week's storms in Georgia, Alabama, and Tennessee. But the announcer's phrasing made me think of The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald: "When the storms of November come early." How many more November tunes are there? |

15 Nov 02 - 11:06 PM (#827587) Subject: RE: November Songs From: mmb Yipes, Genie! I really did type "November" into the search box, but all that came up was the "good song for November" thread. I must have done something wrong. And I wouldn't have checked it again if not for your suggestion. The list of results is truly mind-boggling! Whoda thunk??? Meanwhile, one of the songs that turned up when I re-ran the search - Skibbereen - has a very special meaning for me. My maternal grandmother was from Skibbereen, and family lore says she was attending Mass in Cork Cathedral when news came of Kevin Barry's execution. Any Irish historians out there know if that can be true? Can anyone tell me if there are any recordings that contain "Skibbereen?" I can gat the sense of the tune from the MIDI, but would also like to hear it sung. Any suggestions? Thanks again, Genie! M. |

16 Nov 02 - 05:31 AM (#827657) Subject: RE: November Songs From: The Shambles Autumn Gold No summer songs, it's getting late, The shortened days have sealed your fate. The mists rise, Cloud your eyes. You've lost the prize, but wait..... Autumn gold, the story's in the telling, not yet told. Autumn gold, the wind blows chill, but not yet cold, Autumn gold, not young, but not yet old. A glass half empty, or half to fill? You're over the worst, or you're over the hill. The end on the line? You've had your time. Past your prime, but still..... Autumn gold, the story's in the telling, not yet told. Autumn gold, the wind blows chill, but not yet cold, Autumn gold, not young, but not yet old. No magic, no miracle cures, The leaves fall, but the tree endures. A few branches gone, But the heartwood's strong. Life goes on, 'cos' you're..... Autumn gold, the story's in the telling, not yet told. Autumn gold, the wind blows chill, but not yet cold, Autumn gold, not young, but not yet old. Roger Gall 1996 |
16 Nov 02 - 10:58 AM (#827704) Subject: RE: November Songs From: Peg If by "Westron Winds" you mean Robert Burns' "Westlin' Winds" the actual "title" of that song (it never had a formal one) is "Song (Composed in August)". The lyrics seem to be speaking of late summer as autumn approaches, the harvest season. But I like to sing it at any point from August thru December! (and other times) Turn Turn Ye Seasons The Sheep 'Neath the Snow I actually wrote the lyrics for a song recently with the phrase "November enthralling" but it's not a traditional or folky song at all...for a rock and roll recording project I am working on.. peg |

16 Nov 02 - 12:17 PM (#827776) Subject: RE: November Songs From: Genie Od course, Joni Mitchell's "Urge For Goin'" is perfect for the fall season. "..when the meadow grass is a-turnin' brown, Autumn leaves are a-fallin' down, Winter's closin' in." There's also the pop song "Autumn Leaves" ("Les Feuilles Mortes"). Genie |

16 Nov 02 - 12:29 PM (#827786) Subject: Lyr Add: SECOND WEEK OF DEER CAMP (Da Yoopers) From: Bat Goddess Well, it doesn't specifically MENTION November . . . SECOND WEEK OF DEER CAMP by Da Yoopers It's the second week of deer camp, I got a swollen head. I'm lying with the dustballs underneath my bed. An icy breeze is blowing in through the tongue and groove. My pants are frozen to the floor, and I'm too sick to move. I didn't drink too many, only thirty cans of beer. It must have been that last shot that put me under here. Chorus: It's the second week of deer camp, and all the guys are here. We drink, play cards and shoot the bull, but never shoot no deer. The only time we leave the camp is when we go for beer. The second week of deer camp is the greatest time of year! I remember playing poker, that weasel must have won. He's wearing me new swampers and sleeping with my gun. He's snoring like a chain saw, the camp smells like a dump. Someone's dirty underwear is hanging on the pump. Mukku's in the wood box, Eener's passed out on the stove. His flannel shirt is smoking, I wonder if he knows. Chorus Vito's crawling through the door, I think he got frostbite. He passed out in the outhouse, and he's been there since last night. Then Goofus stumbles through the door, he says he got a buck. He was coming from the wayside and he killed it with his truck. The Musti cracks a beer and says, "It's time to celebrate!" Goofus got the first buck since 1968. Chorus |

05 Sep 06 - 05:51 PM (#1827837) Subject: Lyr Add: WELCOME COLD NOVEMBER From: Herga Kitty Skipper Jack - absolutely. The Out of Season album was a treasure. Kitty WELCOME COLD NOVEMBER (OUT OF SEASON, OUT OF RHYME) A mist comes crawling down the street To the corner where the kids all meet With their fingers stiff and frozen feet To welcome cold November (x2) And underneath the pale gaslight We sang our song into the night All down each alley sharp and bright To welcome cold November Come rain or fog you could be sure If you be rich, or be you poor There'd come a knock upon your door It's only cold November And you never asked the reason why You spared a penny for the guy Or Roman candles in the sky To light up cold November And the poor Guy Fawkes must burn again It's a pity that he died in vain For I should like to do the same To celebrate November But your father's standing by the gate Your mother's in a right old state Son, don't you know it's far too late To wander through November But now I'm old and past me prime Out of season, out of rhyme The kids today can't find the time To welcome cold November |
