Lyr Add: Jerusalem (Steve Earle)

From this site:

Jerusalem   (Steve Earle)

I woke up this mornin' and none of the news was good
And death machines were rumblin' 'cross the ground where Jesus stood
And the man on my TV told me that it had always been that way
And there was nothin' anyone could do or say

And I almost listened to him
Yeah, I almost lost my mind
Then I regained my senses again
And looked into my heart to find

That I believe that one fine day all the children of Abraham
Will lay down their swords forever in Jerusalem

Well maybe I'm only dreamin' and maybe I'm just a fool
But I don't remember learnin' how to hate in Sunday school
Though somewhere along the way I strayed and I never looked back again
But I still find some comfort now and then

Then the storm comes rumblin' in
And I can't lay me down
And the drums are drummin' again
And I can't stand the sound

But I believe there'll come a day when the lion and the lamb
Will lie down in peace together in Jerusalem

And there'll be no barricades then
There'll be no wire or walls
And we can wash all this blood from our hands
And all this hatred from our souls

And I believe that on that day all the children of Abraham
Will lay down their swords forever in Jerusalem

(written by Steve Earle and published by Sarangel Music (ASCAP)

-- A very strong song in the best tradition of folk activism.

Cheers,
Michael

Nice one, Michael. Do you have a tune?

While we're on the subject, how about this, as a (much needed, IMHO) third verse to Blake's now sadly somewhat suspect masterpiece?

And shall the joy be thus confined:
Cease at the bounds of England's shore?
Shall minds be closed and hearts unmoved
As mute starvation pleads for more?
This must not be: we shall fight on;
Our love extend our greed destroy.
Then truly shall Jerusalem
The whole world o'er shout out her joy!

I would have thought that DT would have these lyrics by now, but I was wrong! Odd in light of that long thread about that other song off this CD.

Thanks for posting it michaelr.

For those who might be interested, the Steve Earle official website at http://www.steveearle.com/ (not to be confused with the unofficial Steve Earle website at www.steveearle.net) says that Steve will appear on Crossfire tonight on CNN at 7:30 PM EST. He appeared last week on ABCs Up Close, and sang that other song. ;-)

I love the guy. Almost as much as John Prine. But you can have the "collaboration" with Ms. Crow (Go Amanda). I'm allergic to her I think.

Schantieman -- sorry, I don't have the tune. You may find an mp3 if you search, though.

Try the sites Guest listed above.

Cheers,
Michael

One of the best songs by one of the greatest of songwriters. Along with Richard Thompson and the late Sandy Denny, my favourite. Thank you for posting this.
