BS: What has ______ done for us?

22 Nov 02 - 11:12 AM (#832588)
Subject: BS: What has ______ done for us?
From: Bee-dubya-ell

Now that the series of threads started by "What has the US done for us?" has reached its logical conclusion with "What has God done for us?", let's try a different variation. Just fill in the blank and provide your answer.

Here's mine:

"What have armadillos done for us?"

Not a damned thing except root up flower beds, vegetable beds, and the grass around the fishpond. They also occasionally scare hell out of you when you almost step on one while walking outside at night. Their nocturnal rooting noises can also be very disconcerting to our city friends that come out for weekend campouts in the woods.

I'm afraid it didn't start with the US, it started with me illustrating to a new member the pitfalls of mentioning the Celts.
Maybe I should rename my self Victor Frankenstein, but the monsters loose now and I don't think anything will stop it.

What have all of these stupid "What has" threads done? Nothing but make the Mudcat look like a fucked up joke; a far cry from the creativity for which it has been known, IMO. Enough is enough!

I agree with Katlaughing, Mudcat is rapidly becoming a notice board,it is time we went back to discusion about folk music not mindless drivel.

Just a note to Bruce.....Armadillos provide us with Possum on the Half Shell....

Spaw -- Who also hopes this ends the dumbass stuff. Even invetereate BSers are fed up and I don't think there are plans for a "Dumbass" filter.

I guess a forum/message board is what it is, and them that don't like it can leave it alone. I used to lurk here quite a lot a couple of years ago, posted once or twice, and sort of drifted away. In the past coujple of years my own musical pursuits sort of got rejuvenated, and I thought I'd drop back in here, figuring it was a place where there would be lots of discussions about people making music, and the music they make. My interests are primarily folk, or perhaps "Folk" as in "Great Folk Scare," as opposed to purist trad. I no longer see much difference between the Mudcat and a number of "general purpose" message boards I've been a "regular" at quite since the 80s (when they were "Bulletin Boards"). The more we changes, the more we stays the same, I guess.

What has 'BS' threads done for us?
Given us a place to talk about our thoughts, cares, loves, fears, ourselves. A place for people to get to know others as musicians and people. It is pretty obvious that we all have a life with music in it but we also live. Spaw and katlaughing and selby you have all entered into the BS threads and said your piece or you wouldn't be here now.
Peace, Rustic
P.S.This is the first 'What has ...' thread I entered because the titles didn't intrest me (like are we evaluating people, judging people? What?) so I stayed out of them and intend to do so.
P.S.S. GUEST, I have noticed your many added helpful additions to threads. Your anonymity continues to intrigue and puzzle me but to each his own.

Okay, so this thread was a stupid idea. Would everybody who has never had a stupid idea please present themselves before the the throne of the Lord God for immediate elevation to sainthood?

Since the consensus seems to be that the concept has run its course, please DO NOT post to this thread and kindly allow it to die a quiet natural death.

Thank You,

Bruce

LOL! Sorry, Bruce, I must mention what dachshunds have done for me...

They have provided amusement, companionship, and demonstrations of the very quintessence of both greed and laziness, demonstrations that I have yet seen exceeded or even equalled by anyone. They're remarkable little creatures. Expensive too.

What has Mudcat done for me? Gave me the opportunity to learn about people behind their music. Some good stories of their time in the music industry forgot name of thread, the "Why we sing" thread was a jem also. May not mean alot to the musicians but from the outside looking in these types of BS threads are great.

I was going to post to the decor thread, too scared now Kat might get angry, lol.

Bee-dubya-ell, armadillos are known as nature's speed bumps on the highways of the deep south in the good ol' U. S. of A. They are one of the few known natural sources of traffic speed impairment found in the U. S. except for possums which, as Spaw has stated, are in fact armadillos who have shed their shells and through many generations of inbreeding have developed an actual fear of living and so spend most of their lives practicing for their eventual demise by playing dead. With few predators to keep their populations down, vast communities of these hard working fellows have been uprooted from their natural habitat, transplanted or reintroduced and allowed to florish where traffic speeds were becoming critical along some of the nation's busiest highway systems. Which just shows to go ya what reading too many of these crazy threads will teach ya. And that's the truth so help me.

Your description of possums..."through many generations of inbreeding have developed an actual fear of living and so spend most of their lives practicing for their eventual demise by playing dead."

Geez, sounds like suburban middle class North Americans!

Armadillos often do something very unusual when surprised or fearful. They will jump straight up in the air, sometimes as high as three feet or so. That's one reason why there are so many road-killed specimens around. If you're on a collision course with one it does no good to try to straddle it. Even if you avoid hitting it with the tires it will jump up as you pass over it and kill itself by colliding with some part of your car's undercarriage. At least you can straddle a possum. (And I'm sure that Spaw will find some double entendre in that last sentence.)

Yes, there are many similarities. Fortunately for us possum populations have chosen to practice their considerable talents along our nations highways hence their very valuable contribution to our county's ever increasing difficulties with speeding suburban middle class North American motorists.

Was some one asking about armadillos? Absolutly necessary!! The only animal in the world that can be used to test drugs for Hanson's Disease. The only animal anywhere! True, not that many people have leprosy. That doesn't mean they shouldn't be treated.

This series of threads has given me a lovely set of insights into fellow member's areas of interests, historical pursuits, musical/literary/artistic hobbies, sense of humour etc etc. Katlaughing thinks they make Mudcat look like a "fucked-up joke". Well. it takes all sorts. Personally I think they are a credit to Mudcat.

I don't straddle possums Bruce......I blow up their ass. Just ask Cleigh O'Possum!!!

And don't think twice about this thread as it's in the best tradition of the 'Cat. The place is quite cyclical and we really get lost in these inane threads every once in awhile where one or two is entertaining but then they proliferate into the most simpleass shit in the world. Eventually someone comes along with a topper (like this one) which ends it for awhile.

About 4 years ago we were going through a bunch of things which started, "What Does a Mudcatter___________" or "What Kind of ________Does a Mudcatter Use." Like this last batch, at first, a few were cute, but pretty soon we're down to asking about deodorant. With that one, Art Thieme had had it with them and started one called "What Kind of Condom Does a Mudcatter Use" as a topper to the whole thing. Well it ended the others, but it became a wildly succesful thread, much to Art's chagrin....so we never let him forget it. Yeah, this one is in the best traditions of Mudcat.........

What has Guest ever done to upset some people, these ones who think that certain guest have flamed or trolled, should look at themselves first, have guest and other people have the right to get angry or just speak their minds, and if you don't like what they write about, then don't answer them or just let them get on with their own lives, we are different anyhow.
what a dreary world this would if we were all the same
There are times when I read these threads and I sometimes get angry or upset about what people have written, and there are times when I wanted to write my opinon, but then I think that that there are quite a lot of people who might not as thick skined as me, and so I don't write it.

My apologies to Bee-dubya-ell. Spaw is right, this one has been a topper. He is also right that we sometimes get many of a similar title that it looks dumbass stoopid when a person comes to the Forum. Part of what got me with this latest batch were the titles. They sound judgemental; if one can get beyond the title there seems to be some good info.

Spaw, please come help me clean up the litter box?
