Lyr Add: Log Cabin Home in the Sky (Mike Heron)

23 Nov 02 - 12:18 AM (#833219)
Subject: Lyr Add: COWBOY WALTZ
From: GUEST,Al

All 'round this wide country
Winter has now begun
Now is the time to step away
From the California sun
To go and then be free as the wind
And wild as the frosty sky
Winter is nigh and let's fly to my log cabin
Home in the sky

There's snow piled in all 'round the door
And maybe a log on the stove
The chickens are singing a comforting song
They're saying it's you that I love
Let the wolves howl, they won't find us here
By softly the lamp we will lie
Winter is nigh and let's fly to my log cabin
Home in the sky

There comes a time for every man
When he must turn his back on the crowd
When the glare of the lights gets much too bright
And the music plays too loud
When a man must run from the deeds he has done
Recalling those days with a sigh
Winter is nigh and let's fly to my log cabin
Home in the sky

Al

Hi, Al - who wrote it?
What else can you tell us about the song?

Mike Heron of The Incredible String Band receives the credits for this on their 1968 double Album "Wee Tam and the Big Huge", where it is titled Log Cabin Home in the Sky. These are the lyrics copied from the LP sleeve - just a few differences from Al's version

All around this wide country the winter it has now begun
Now is the time to slip away from the California sun
To a place where a man can be free as the wind
And wild as the huskie's cry
Now winter is nigh let us fly to my log cabin home in the sky

With snow piling all round the door
And many a log on the stove
Where the chickadee's singing a comforting song
I'll show it's you that I love
O let the wolves howl, they won't find us here
By a soft oil lamp we will lie
Now winter is nigh let us fly to my log cabin home in the sky

There comes a time to every man
When he must turn his back on the crowd
When the glare of the lights gets much too bright
And the music plays too loud
When a man must run from the deeds he has done
Recalling those days with a sigh
Winter is nigh and let's fly to my log cabin
Now winter is nigh let us fly to my log cabin home in the sky.

I heard Jenny Cleland with the Highwoods Stringband sing it in the early 70's in Ithaca, NY. My memory of the words she sang might be a little shaky. Looks like Snuffy got the source. I play it on the fiddle, and it used to be the only waltz I knew. Al

Cowboy Waltz(the tune)was learned from Woody Guthrie. When I played the tune for Uncle Jeff Guthrie(who taught Woody how to play) he exclaimed, "That's not 'The Cowboy Waltz', that's the 'McGreevey(?)
Waltz!". Telling the story to John Cohen, he informed me that the tune is also known as the "Green Valley Waltz".

I love this song -- I used to do it back in the seventies and I'm bringing it back after hearing it on Radio 2 a couple of Saturdays ago. It was fairly untypical of The Incredible String Band(Apart from sounding completely bizarre!), and not the sort of thing you expect to hear on Radio 2, either.

Anyone have a tune source? Thanks!

Kat, do you mean post the tune, or where did the tune come from?

I might be able to do an ABC of the tune in the next couple of days. My guess is that it's probably a traditional american tune to which the ISB set some pseudo-western lyrics - they sing it in an exaggerated bluegrass-type accent.

Thanks, Snuffy. Sorry I wasn't more specific. I meant an audio file of the tune. I haven't learned ABC, yet, but I can read dots and my ears listen "real good." **BG**

Thanks a bunch,

kat

Someone asked me what does it mean 'Log Cabin Home in the Sky'

She thought it referred to dying, but my feeling's more that it's a cabin in the mountains, anyone know?
