Lyr Req: Bambino (Tom Springfield)

Has anyone got the words of this old chestnut please? It's coming up to Christmas, and I'd love to be able to sing it. There's not many Tom Springfield lyrics on the web, other than a few of the more popular ones, and I can't find "Bambino" anywhere. Help!

I think the chorus went
Sancta Natale Bambino mio
Sancta Natale bambino mine.
Or it could be Santa Natale, have you tried looking under that?

I've searched under "santa natale", "buon natale" (which also appears somewhere in the chorus if my memory serves me correctly) and "bambino mine", none of which have thrown up the lyrics I'm after.

My brother used to be member No 7 of the Springfields Fan Club, and I can still remember bits from that first LP:

Bambino you don't know
That many years ago
A holy child in Bethlehem
Brought to us(earth?) eternal joy.

Thank you for those memories! If anyone else can remember other bits, we should be able to patch something together! Snuffy, if you're still in touch with your brother, would he be able to help?

I'll ask him. In the meantime it appears that Judith Durham recorded "Bambino" on a Salvation Army charity CD in 1995.

Released in Australia only. The Spirit of Christmas 1995. Judith
contributed "Bambino" (Lyrics by Tom Springfield). Compilation

Any Oz Catters got a copy?

Just given it a listen. *Unsure about this line.

Bambino can you hear?
The bells are ringing so clear
Down through the valley echoing
Songs of happiness they sing

Santa Natale bambino mio
Santa Natale bambino mine
To you and all mankind
Down through the valley echoing
Songs of happiness they sing

Bambino you don't know
That many years ago
A little child from heaven above
Brought to us eternal love.

Santa Natale bambino mio
Santa Natale bambino mine
To you and all mankind
A little child from heaven above
Brought to us eternal love.

Such joy our hearts would feel
If in the manger we'd kneel
With angel choir for company
*That first night we would be free
(or That from strife we would be free)

Santa Natale bambino mio
Santa Natale bambino mine
To you and all mankind
With angel choir for company
*That first night we would be free

Santa Natale bambino mio
Santa Natale bambino mine
fade

Brakn, that's wonderful - thank you so much. I think the line you're unsure of is "from strife we would be free" - it makes more sense. And thanks to everyone else also for contributing.

I had this single in the late fifties.

Bambino you don't know
That many years ago
A little child from heaven above
Brought to you eternal love.
Santa Natale bambino mio
Sante natale bambino mine
To you and all mankind
A little child from heaven above
Brought to you eternal love.

Can't remember the second verse but I've tried numerous times to resurrect the lyrics.

Well, the single was issued by The Springfields in 1961 on the Philips label; it was the A side of the single, issued in November 1961 and made 16 in the UK. What - if anything - it did elswhere, I don't know. I'm not a record collector, so I couldn't say whether or not the single is rare.

You may be able to find an original single on Ebay; possibly you can find a copy of the LP The Springfields Story - that's the LP where our library track originated.

It's on YouTube, and I've posted the link below; just high light it, copy it into your address bar and press GO. It'll take you straight to the link on YouTube and start playing it; I've tested it.

If your computer is less than ten years old, it should have the facility to play MP3 files. If nothing else, you could always download an older/smaller version of Winamp from the Winamp site.

More than this I can't suggest, but you're still welcome to a copy of the track if you want one.

I love this song - apparently the tune derives from something called "The Bagpiper's Carol" -a search on that might throw up something interesting.

I bought this single after hearing a live recording/broadcast of The Springfields on the radio.
It had a great ending.

When I listened to the single it had a fade out ending. I was so disappointed!

well, what a surprise! I've been looking for the sheet music to Bambino for quite a number of years. You're all right....it is a very perky little seasonal song.I'm in a male voice choir and that's why I want the sheet music...in TTBB format. Some years ago,I heard Risca Male Choir (Nr.Newport,Gwent) sing this, and they have recorded it.Their arrangement is by the THEN musical director,Martin Hodson who very kindly sent me a copy of his sheet music arrangement..but sadly with no piano accompaniment.
I still haven't got it!! HELP!!!!

The carol originated in Sicily in approximately the seventeenth century, and is traditionally played on the zampogna (a type of large, sweet-toned bagpipe with two drones and two chanters) by shepherds who come to the villages throughout Italy. The shepherds would serenade private homes and statues of the Virgin Mary in the nine days before Christmas.

It is believed that Handel adopted pipe music with his so-called `Pipers Carol' or `Canzone d'l Zampognari' which he used for "He Shall Feed His Flock Like a Shepherd" in "Messiah." He may have heard this melody during a visit to Naples in 1708, 33 years before composition of the oratorio.

I know I come a bit late, but maybe that someone of you will like this information: just open YOUTUBE and look for "Tu scendi dalle stelle", that is the title of the original carol in Italian (the one to which andrew e is referring).
The arrangement is completely different from the one of Tom Spingfield, but I'm sure you will appreciate the version sung by Andrea Bocelli or Luciano Pavarotti.

Buon Natale a tutti.

This is the song that Crusula referred to:

From Opere del Beato Alphonso-Maria de Liguori, Vol 3 by Alfonso de Liguori (Torino: Presso Giacinto Marietti, 1825), page 40:

Canzoncina a Gesù bambino.

1. Tu scendi dalle stelle, o re del cielo,
        E vieni in una grotta al freddo, al gelo;
            O bambino mio divino,
            Io ti vedo qui tremar.
                O Dio beato,
E quanto ti costò l' avermi amato!

2. A te, che sei del mondo creatore,
Mancano panni e foco, o mio Signore.
            Caro eletto pargoletto,
            Quanto questa povertà
                Più m' innamora!
Giacchè ti fece amor povero ancora.

3. Tu lasci del to Padre il divin seno,
Per venir a penar su questo fieno.
            Dolce amore del mio core,
            Dove amor ti trasportò?
                O Gesù mio,
Per chi tanto patir? per amor mio!

4. Ma se fu tuo volere il tuo patire,
Perchè vuoi pianger poi, perchè vagire?
            Sposo mio, amato Dio,
            Mio Gesù t' intendo sì:
                Ah! mio Signore,
Tu piangi non per duol, ma per amore.

5. Tu piangi per vederti da me ingrato,
Dopo sì grande amor, sì poco amato.
            O diletto del mio petto,
Se già un tempo fu così,
                Or te sol bramo;
Caro non pianger più, ch' io t'amo, io t'amo

6. Tu dormi, o Ninno mio; ma in tanto il core
Non dorme, no, ma veglia a tutte l' ore:
Deh! mio bello, e puro agnello,
            A che pensi? dimmi tu.
                Oh amore immenso!
A morire per te, rispondi, io penso.

7. Dunque a morir per me tu pensi o Dio.
E ch' altro amar fuori di te posso io?
            O Maria, speranza mia,
S' io poc' amo il tuo Gesù,
                Non ti sdegnare;
Amalo tu per me, s' io nol so amare.

i first heard this springfield song when i was about 11 in 1961 and loved it. later in life on hearing "He shall feed His flock" from the Messiah i recognised the melody and thought that this is where the Springfields got their inspiration, however today i learned that even Handel pinched the melody probably from a Scicilian shepherd, and thanks to Crustula i went to you tube and listened to Pavarotti singing "Tu Scendi Dalle Stella". Thanks to you all, i have finally come to the end of my search for the origions of "Bambino"

Thanks to all who contributed to the thread. I have finally been able to understand the Italian words "Sancta Natale Bambino mio" which translate to "Holy Christmas my little child." The Seekers' version of this song is my very favorite. The original Italian song is done beautifully by both Andrea Bocelli and Pavarotti - see above threads for complete title to search on YT.

Pete Seeger translated this song as "The Star Carol", don't know when, but it was recorded by The Weavers, so it was quite a few years ago. It was also recorded as "Twas on a night like this" on Folk-Legacy CD-114, by Dave Para, Cathy Barton, and the Paton family.

Done some searching, and came up with:

There is a thread on "Twas on a night like this" here on Mudcat, from 2002. The Folk-Legacy record was done in 1989. Pete Seeger copyrighted his adaptation/translation in 1952.
According to Wikipedia, the original song was written by Alphonsus Maria de Liguori in 1732.
The Springfields' version ("Bambino") is on Youtube.
