Mudcat CD remarkable music moments...

Subject: Mudcat CD remarkable music moments...
From: InOBU

I have to say, in finding a highlight that speaks to what Mudcat is... (besides the overall wonderous event of seeing the English speaking world's folk tradition laid out so well...) is seeing in music the spirit of brother and sisterhood in conflict, in presenting opposing views with beauty and respect...
On the Violet CD, there is an North Irish Loyalist song, "The Campsite at Drumcree" from Derrymacash and a North Irish Repulican ballad, Henry Joy McCracken from Martin Ryan, both performed beautifully, both speaking to the concerns of their community from the heart, and OH! to hear a big concert of us all, with Marin and Derrymacash on stage together, in harmonious disagreement, but sharing the comradery of music.
Cheers
Larry

Larry ...

Sorry to burst your bubble, mate. But I wrote Drumcree as an utter piss-take. Oooops! Jesus ... could there be others out there who think it's for real, rather than just a bit of a sleg that kicked off the Drumcree threads?

F's sake! I was listening to it, while writing, I will have to have another listen! Jeeze! I was thinking about how, I for example was not in favor of Nazi's marching in Skokie, but what a great way to express the Orange possition, so much better than much recent Loyalist singing! I'll have another listen! Be careful mate, you may have created the next, Bright Orange Hero's of Comber!
Cheers

The only down side of the CD is there is SO much, that you listen to everything once, and that takes DAYS before you can give things a real close listen... when I looked up the album notes, I though to my self, odd... thought Derrymacash was a Nationalist... hmmmm my brain must be slowing down... guess it is!
Hope to see you at the great northern gathering

Nahh, Larry, dinna beat on yerself -- Derry is a true chameleon, and he sings like an Orangeman!! LOL!!    But you are putting your finger on one of the really magic things about this whole story - the weave of all those voices coming from so many places and being brought out side by side really does something to you. I can't tell you how many times I got chills just reflecting on it, and I am delighted to hear you point it out!

A highlight of the Rose CD is Deni's original song "There I Must Lie".
There's been some discussion here of songwriters who work in the trad idiom, i.e. who write songs that sound as if they were old.

"There I Must Lie", written from the perspective of a condemned Anne Boleyn, is a shining example of this demanding craft. And Deni has a wonderful voice, as well!

Cheers,
Michael

I spent the afternoon today in the parking lot of the women's center where I work, assembling donated bicycles and listening to the Mudcat CD's. Several people stopped and listened for a while, and they were really impressed by the music. I was proud to say that the people who made those recordings are my friends. It made for a delightful afternoon.

I'm only hoping that there will still be stock *after* the holidays (and, I mean through Valentines Day)...

There's no way in hell of my affording even one until the expenses of the season are over. Not merely Christmas, but my wedding on Valentines day to boot.

So...can anyone tell me what the chances are of there still being any in, oh, say...April?

Hi - I added this thread to the crosslinks. The Mudcat CD's are five different colors, all listed above. I think there's a list of tracks for each CD in the first message of the thread for that CD. Here's Orchid, my current favorite.

I managed to listen to just "Orchid" on this busy weekend and all I can say is that we have a bunch of talented folks around here.

And Kendall -- damn! Awesome version of "Rolling Home!" You sound kinda like a cross between Johnny Cash and Dan Fogelberg.

Highlights for me off this CD are also The Creek, Sing with the Angles, and "Beans Bacon and Gravy" may be a rough recording, but it has a ton of charm. It reminds me of going to my grandparent's church -- they didn't have a choir, just whoever wanted to play that day.

I really like The Parting Glass and Letter From Lilac Acres, too. Okay, I like most of it!

Where to start? first off - TWENTY THREE tracks on this one CD! I'm listening to Plum as I type - less then halfway through and what I have heard so far is already worth the price and more - only one track that didn't thrill me; and I blush to think I submitted it!

All I can say is I thank Amos for his charity in including it.

I am astounded at the consistent beauty and polish exhibited on these CDS. Way to go, Mudcats!!! Also...a word on the composition of each CD that I've heard...Amos, you did a marvelous job! The music flows, one cut to another in a seamless blend. Not an easy job, I expect, given the variety of music you were dealing with.

Another memorable moment is InOBU's "Yvette's Song", which puts his original lyrics to the tune (if I'm not mistaken) of Clannad's "Mheall si lena glorthai me".

As I listen to these CD over and over, new "highlights" emerge for me.

Llanfair, your rendition of "Twa Corbies" is superb! I love the background accompaniment!

Harvey Andrews's "From The Heart" (Plum) really "tears me apart," as the lyrics say.

Yes, "The Creek" is a great song, and I love Justa Picker's and Rick Fielding's pickin' (the first songs on the CDs).

There are just too many highlights to list 'em all here.

Further to Lin's post, I was listening to the CDs on my Discman (tm) over New Year while Herself, Sis-in-Law and Ma-in-law (Maggie) were playing cards. I had been told off by Herself for humming or whistling along but couldn't resist joining Sandy and the gang on "When you and I were young, Maggie" in honour of ma-in-law. She at least appreciated it and joined in, tho' Herself gave me one of her looks!
