People, please look at my last post at that thread called FOLK MUSIC ON PBS. I am embarrassed and would like to make amends.

Art, I think you earned the right to be an opinionated a-hole; you've paid as much by way of dues as anyone in the field. And especially you earned the right by showing that you're willing to fess up to it. I wouldn't beat myself up much for it!!   You may be opinionated but that's one of the reasons we love ya!!

Mr. Thieme (I saw you in Chicago about a hunderd years ago and called you that then - no need to change now!)

I agree with Amos on this one. I wouldn't care if I agreed with you or thought you were completely wrong. You have EARNED the right to express your opinion of folk music here or on any other forum. All I want you to do is keep those opinions coming in! You're one of the folks I listen to.

Art, you were not wrong. Check my message on the PBS thread. You have a right to your opinions as much as anyone else on Mudcat and they are valid as you see them and as we can share them.

This doesn't invalidate the fact that there was a plethora of talent on that show. I don't always like everything that's great...Elvis,Jimi Hendrix, etc. but they are great. I would be a fool to say otherwise. Whether the talent on the show were best represented by that broadcast is simply a matter of who you talk to and what you think.

I've talked to some young folks who thought the show was great. Well, it might have introduced them to the world of folk music.
And I might have fallen asleep. We need educated voices like yours to express opinions.

Frank

Ya' know, if you don't quit apologizing for stuff like that, I don't know what we're gonna' do with you. Yeah, I know that you feel it was "over" from thee heat of the moment and all that goes along with that line of reasoning, but seriously Art, damn near all of us would prefer to hear the real thing from you than some gilded peice of fluff to avoid hard feelings or whatever. Geez man, if we can't handle the real thing than we need to step back and get a beeter handle on our own selves.

Okay, so you're sorry for the way it came out or whatever, but it still is what you meant isn't it? If you must, just stick a quick note in a following post that says, "Sorry, I could have phrased that better," but to say more implies to some that you didn't mean whatever it is. Quit worrying about it!!!

An opinion is perfectly valid from someone who knows the folk music scene as well as you do and the fact that on reflection you feel it might have beeen better presented to the masses does not detract from it in the least. If nothing else perhaps you have made a few people stop and think about something they might otherwise have taken for granted.

Art.........stop..........you're killing me.........I haven't even read the freakin' thing and I know it is fine. Hell, Frank and 'spaw said so.

I will read it next, but I have to tell you, it is OK to get cranky once in a while.....shit, I do it all the time..........LOL. It's what makes this place a real joint instead of a bunch of nameless, faceless folks that need a life and get their jollies by anon sniping. You on the other hand are a walking, talking testament to our craft. Grab yourself a coke and some cookies, and go enjoy the well deserved understanding and adulation from us mere mortals. Hell, we love ya.

All the best,

Mick

Having opinions about things is one of the definitions of being a human being. Being "opinionated" means holding on to these opinions obstinately, in despite of the evidence. So by changing his mind once he heard the show, and saying so publicly, Art has demonstrated that whatever he may be, in this case he is not "opinionated".

Doesn't sound too much like my kind of show either, but that's just an opinion...

Art, Like my post about the folk clubs and coffee houses in the 50s and you very skillfully told me I was mistaken, I took it the way it was intended!! You are a very knowledgable person that we all would do well to emulate. I just have problems with people who have all or nothing opinions that tend to make other people feel stupid. I wish we could all be more like you and have the wisdom to gently differ with someone's opinion, and the guts to admit wnen he is wrong. you are a class guy   Jim

I was so deeply offended that I find this apology scant payment for the grief I've suffered.....

.....oh, and don't you just hate it when Mick gets cranky like in the above post?

kat's post was a bit terse and curt too.

Offendable me. I feel so......I don't know, *superior*, that I alone am the gentle soft-spoken one around here.

D-uh, are we talking about the PBS show that I turned off when it turned out to be a pledge night thing? I just happened to be in a Portland motel that night and flipped on the rebroadcast to check it out. No way, it it means sitting through the spiels ...

So, Art, how awful WAS it??

Well, Art, at least you got me to read the PBS thread- I had been putting it off. What to say? Just that- some of us (still-living ones) were there pretty early (I came to NYC from Kentucky in 1947). We all had our niches and made our contributions, and our shoulders are gettin mighty tired from being stood upon by the younger generations... and being neglected, overlooked, and made fun of because today we don't fit into Today.

Wrong for the first time in your life and about something as sacred as a PBS Begathon...gosh, Art. I don't know if we can just let this slide. I mean, at least three "Our Fathers" and a "Hail Mary" are in order. Or maybe sack cloth and ashes. Or maybe, the ultimate punishment - three straight hours of Eminem and Englebert Humperdink! Never mind. You already made up for this blunder with the "Condom Thread". You're forgiven.

And THAT kind of statement is worth apologizing for...when/if I feel like it!!! So don't YOU fret.

I apologise in advance to all the people I will upset and annoy and offend with posts I haven't written yet. Though since I've already apologised, they won't be offended, so there's no need for the apology in the first place.

All right then - I apologise to all the people who would have been offended if I hadn't apologised.

That should take care of that one.

Art- I said that not just for me, and you, but for all the others who were "there then," and who were right for their time. I certainly agree with all who thought the show was badly put together, and that their choices, and their dates for the "beginning" of folk music could have been more carefully thought out (to put it delicately).
