But it is the 'real' stuff from Arthur's first brewery. Strange thing with Guiness is that the quality is usually inversely proportional to the price - The more they charge you for it, the worse it is. Don't know why, but this rule seems true in most places. |

Cheap round here would be £2.20 - £2.30. Declan, I think turnover has something to do with your observation. The places where it is cheap and there are plenty of people drinking the stuff do seem to have the best pints. Push the price up, fewer drinkers, stuff sits around longer... My theory anyway. |

If I go to one of Tim Martin's "Wetherspoons" pubs I can get a pint for as little as £1.20 (or even less when they've got their special promotions/festivals on). BTW Raedwulf, I can get a reasonable pint of mild in quite a few of the pubs which I go to - Shepherd Neame do a reasonable brew. Unless there is a regular demand for it though, it has to be kept on top pressure. Up to about 25 years ago it was available at most pubs down south - even Watney's brewed it! |

Last time I was at McGurk's in St. Louis' Soulard district it was $2.50 for a drawn 16oz pint and drawn nicely by a sweet lookin gal from Derry. That WAS a few years ago. As I mentioned many times before, I am conducting a one man campaign for our local to install the proper draught system. I am beginning to think that Dennis is resisting the idea because he makes more on the cans! A "four pack" of cans is around $8 and sometimes one can get a six pack of bottles for the same price at Walmurg's. When in Atlanta a couple of years ago I was at a sports bar in the Mariott and the barkeep talked me into trying another stout when I had asked for Guinness. "If you don't think that this is better than Guinness, I'll give you the Guinness free". I drank deeply of what was the best "wrap yer tongue around this" libation I have EVER had the pleasure to swallow. Unfortunately I was unable to remember the name of that wonderful brew. I think that it was something like McPherson's but I have had no luck in rediscovering the stout. I had to leave early the next AM and haven't been back to Atlanta since. 04 Jan 03 - 08:22 AM (#858370) Subject: RE: BS: What be price of Guinness where you be From: Terry K Just a word on the quality, fo what it's worth. Guinness, bear in mind, is a non-live product (except for the bottled version at the time of bottling). The fermentation is stopped and the product is blanketed under pressurised nitrogen in order to retain the liquid as inert as possible. The principal controlling influences over serving are the cleanliness of the pipes and the serving temperature. Dirty pipes may or may not have any noticeable effect on the perceived quality, but the serving temperature does have a noticeable effect. Interestingly, there is a huge urban myth that "Irish Guinness is better than English Guinness" - mainly perpetuated by people who drink the stuff only rarely. The aim of the brewery is consistency, worldwide, no matter where the particular batch was brewed. The actual difference is that in Ireland they generally seem to serve it colder these days, as compared to in England. The effect is that in Ireland, you get less of the real taste. So those who claim Guinness is better in Ireland are really happier with getting less of the real taste - this is neither a good thing nor a bad thing, just a consequence. As a regular, sometimes even copious, Guinness drinker, I have to say that I generally find it to be extremely consistent, and that when I don't enjoy it, it's more to do with my mood and surroundings at the time, rather than any scientific difference in the quality of the drink. Now Real Ale, that's another thing altogether. cheers, Terry |

This year's St Patricks Day promotion (in the U.K.) will be offering big Guinness hats (similar to last year's) and small plasticised Bodhrani (correct plural???).The pubs have also received a small supply of 'face paints' (perish the thought) Last years gifts were large hats and mini fiddles, the fiddles were electronic, and putting the wire of the bow in contact with any two of the 'strings' produced an individual note from one of half-a-dozen tunes. Repeating the action with suitable timing did allow any of the tunes to be played. The tunes included 'Auld Langs Syne', 'Ode to Joy', 'You Are My Sunshine' and 'Greensleeves'. Clearly a very Irish selection Nigel |

My two favorite haunts are Claddah Cottage ($3.75) and The Bull & Bush ($4.00) non-authentic Irish or English pubs usually charge more and keep it cooler - I've asked why and it's because they usually keep the keg in the same refridgerator with the rest of the kegs instead of having a different one installed. Hence the Black Liquidation is less flavorful and less creamy. The 4 pack of cans ges for about $7.00 to $8.50. Sometimes it's on sale. The 6 pack of bottles should be discontinued - that Guinness sucks! Anyone visiting the Orlando area, PM me and I'll take you out for a pint! pax yall |
