Lyr/Chords Req: Barbecue (Paul Williams)

Hey kids

While at a friends house over the holidays, we watched Emmet Otter's Jug-Band Christmas, a Jim Henson production. There's a great song in it called Barbecue, that starts something like this:

When you meet somebody that don't like soul food
They still got a soul
And it don't mean that you got no rhythm
If you don't like rock and roll

Then the chorus:

Barbecue! Well bless my spirit
You know it never fails
and the sauce mama makes
will stay there forever
if you ever get it under your nails

Well, my two-and-a-half year-old son is absolutely in love with this song, and keeps asking me to play it. I've searched the Web under the show's title, and under the name Paul Williams (because I think he used to write most of this muppet-ish stuff), but no joy.

Does anyone know where to find the lyrics?

Thanks,

Paul

I've searched the Internet using Google, and failed to come up with any lyrics or even sound samples.

IMDb confirms that the songs were written by Paul Williams.

I guess you'll have to rent the video and learn it from there.

I didn't have any luck either. I think I said that on another thread, not sure.

If I recall correctly, those may be all the lyrics there are. I think the song is sung during a rehearsal of Emmet's band and gets interrupted.

FWIW, the show is out on DVD and VHS.   Here's a link to fye.com, where the video is available for only 5.99. (Hey, I might just get a copy at that price...)

Don't forget the brilliant song - Bogle's "Aussie Barebeque" - should be in the DT.

Not sure if it is or isn't in the dt. To late to spend much time searching...

It does exist on this site though... AUSSIE BAR-B-Q

From an amusing web site called Rocklopedia Fakebandica! -
The Frogtown Hollow Jubilee Jug-Band - From the muppet TV special "Emmett Otter's Jug-Band Christmas." Emmet Otter formed this band with his pals to play Waterville's First Annual Christmas Talent Contest. They rehearse the song "Barbecue," but when that idiot Yancy Woodchuck plays it in the competition before they do, they quickly rehearse up another song, "Brothers." They don't win the competition (see The Nightmare), but dammit they had heart! And they did get a paying gig singing at the Riverside Rest restaurant owned by Doc Bullfrog (not Kermit, he just narrated). This semi-otter band featured Emmet Otter (Jerry Nelson) on washtub bass, Harvey (Jim Henson) the muskrat on kazoo and washboard, and Wendel (voiced by Dave Goelz) the porcupine on jug, and Charlie the otter on cigar box banjo. Emmet's mother, Alice Otter also performed at the contest. Composer Paul Williams composed the songs. See also The Nightmare

The members of this group have
gone on to make music with others.
Joe Craven plays with David Grisman
and others. Tracy is now with a
Cajun group called Mumbo Gumbo,
any one know of these...?
i guess this requires a seperate thread....

I acquired a copy of the recording awhile back, here's my take on it :)

BARBECUE
(Paul Williams)

When you meet somebody that don't like soul food, they still got a soul,
And it don't mean that you got no rhythm if you don't like rock 'n' roll,
But if your taste's like mine, you like cider, not wine, and your very favorite thing to do
Is get a purty girl dancing to jug band music and a mess of mama's barbecue.

Barbecue! Bless my spirit! I swear that never fails,
And the sauce mama makes just stays there forever if you dare to get it under your nails.

Well, you may be poor with the wolf at your door, but money isn't everything;
But you still got the sun and a river full of fun, and you always have a song to sing;
So you get that frown off your face. We're gonna replace it with a grin and a dream come true,
With a purty girl dancing to jug band music and a mess of mama's barbecue.

Barbecue! Bless my spirit! I swear that never fails,
And the sauce mama makes just stays there forever if you dare to get it under your nails.

So get the frown off your face. We're gonna replace it with a grin and a dream come true,
With a purty girl dancing to jug band music and a mess of mama's barbecue.

That's a purty girl dancing to jug band music and a mess of mama's barbecue,
Mess of mama's barbecue.

Sure is by Paul Williams- I'm sure the audio copy I have is probably a dvd rip (some of the songs are different from the version broadcast on HBO from back in 1980 or so that I have an ancient VHS copy of) but bbq is the same on both.

From Distant Melody: Dedicated to the Forgotten Children's Lyrics:

BARBECUE
Paul Williams

When you meet somebody that don't like soul food,
They still got a soul;
And it don't mean that you got no rhythm,
If you don't like rock 'n roll;
But if your tastes are like mine,
You like cider not wine,
And your very favorite thing to do
Is get a perty girl dancin' to jug-band music
And a mess of mama's barbecue.

Barbecue lifts my spirit.
I swear that it never fails,
And the sauce mama makes just stays there forever
If you dare to get it under your nails.
Well, you may be poor with a wolf at your door,
But money isn't everything.
You still got your song and a river full of fun,
And you'll always have a song to sing.

So get the frown off your face.
We're gonna replace it with a grin and a dream come true,

So get the frown off your face.
We're gonna replace it with a grin and a dream come true,
With a perty girl dancin' to jug-band music,
And a mess of mama's barbecue.

That's a perty girl dancin' to jug-band music,
And a mess of mama's barbe—
Mess of mama's barbe—
Mess of mama's barbecue!
A mess of mama's barbecue.
