I have been looking at the names on this site now for some time, there are some weird and wonderful ones, it's made me wonder how each one of you came to choose your Mudcat name.

Mine was simple, A few years ago I would often experiment with different colours with my hair, on one occasion I had bought some purple, red, yellow, wash out hair sprays earlier in the day I sprayed it onto the front of my hair that night, which was also a spiky style (bit punky). As I walked in to the session my friend Charles Atlas (Mudcat name) called me rock chick! Which kind of stuck with me. I don't those colours now, it's much more subdued, not that I am, I love fun, music and good company, properly even more so than back then.

Took the Irish Gaelic spelling of "raparree." A raparree was a highwayman, often a former soldier who had fought against the English.      
They viewed themselves as "Robin Hood" sorts; usually they were hanged.

Like them, "My spurs are rusty/My coat is rent/My plume is damp with rain/And the thistledown and the barleybeards/Are thick on my horse's mane."

Pretty tedious really: I (used to) sing a lot of shanties and other sea songs. The spelling is from the Bromyard Schantieman competition which I had the honour/good fortune to win several years ago.

Mine is from a song I sing from an old 45 of Joanna Carlin (Melanie Harrold, Irma Cetes). I think it was banned by the BBC after a couple of weeks back in 1977. It's a scratchy old 45 & I'm still missing some of the words.

But anyone who hears me sing it will know who I am. I'm not really hiding, I'm just someone who hasn't met you yet :-)

Why Blues=Life? Because it does! *g* I was trying to find a name on the Harmony Central guitar forum, and tried various forms of Bluesman, etc, since that's what I play. Everything I tried was taken, until I tried the current Tautology. Since then, to save confusion (mine) I've used the same name on all music forums that I've joined up with. (This is one of 3, but the one in which I participate the most.)

I used to be known as derrymacash - which is the fairly notorious (at leash to fellow 'Cash people) piece of North Armagh where I grew up. But I've recently taken the momentous (to me) decision to use my proper given name in these here quarters.

Mine's just my first initial and the organism I am fighting to suppress. It looks as though we will be to market this Summer. Of course the involvement with chanteys and the sea (for as long as I can recall) might have something to do with it, too.

Despite the rumor that it's an acronym for "Big Wanking Liar", it's my initials (BWL) - short for Bruce Wayne (yes I was named after Batman and damned proud of it!) LaWall.    I decided to spell it out so as to underscore my love, respect and admiration for George W. Bush, commonly referred to as "Dubya" around here. (Please see this thread).

My previous Mudcat incarnations were "Bored at Work" (which is exactly what I was when I chose it, only to decide later that it was a really stupid name) and "Bedubya" (which I couldn't resuscitate due to having forgotten my password).

FWIW I almost always sign off with my real name.

Some 42 odd years ago my maternal Grandmother first laid eyes upon me, and claimed I was a chip off the old block ( I happen to be a    Junior also.v ) so, chip isnt bad.

Now, when I got here Chip was already taken, so I decided to use Chip2447...the 2447 spells out Chip when translated from lettrrs on an american fone dial..Chip Chip, the chip so nice they named him twice.

It used to be my first name and the first letter of my last name. When I got married, I changed my last name, and it now begins with "D", but I moved my former last name to the middle, so now it's my first name with the first letter of my middle name. Are you with me so far? Good...

Now I've thought, from time to time recently, that maybe I ought to change my screen name since my last name has changed. I don't know, though. CarolC has been a good name for me, and I've been using it for about two and a half years. It's a tough decision and I may just end up making it by default (if I don't make the decision, the decision will make me, as they say, and I'll stay CarolC).

So I'm open to ideas people might have for a possible new screen name for me. I can't promise I'll use any of them, but who knows? If you fire them at me with just the right trajectory, one of them might stick.

P.S. khandu called me "Oh strange one" on my birthday thread. I like that a lot, but the length seems a bit cumbersome.

To the extent that I had any choice in the matter, I opted for this name by choosing to emerge into this world on 24th July, the feast of St. Declan.

By all accounts I was about a week late. Just as well, I wouldn't have liked having to go through life as Swithin Fay.

Well, I used to be Bob over at Tweedsblues but I discovered not long after tunneling in there that one of the members, Kitty West (of Arlo Guthrie Carnagie ebag gig fame) had just broken up with her husband, Bob. To add to that, the new Bob at Tweeds (me) was more of a jerk than Bobert, if ya' can believe that. So I fired him! With my birth name, Robert, being taken by someone else I asked the Tweezerins fir help and Kitty West came up with the "Bobert" and it stuck...

However, I could have used my last name as the inspiration for some sort of nickname based on the concept of 8 pints, had not the real 8_pints pre-empted the idea long before I joined MudCat.

(I may have met Mr. and Mrs 8_pints at a session in Manchester in North-West England once, about a year ago; but couldn't put faces to MudCat noms de guerre at that time).


Plenty of my former rugby team-mates still announce my arrival at various locations by saying, "Ohmigawd, it's HuwG !", falscetto.

Yup, gone through this before, but here 'tis again.

Originally I was Linn the Thanatolithologist until I got "legal". Jeri sucked me into, I mean "introduced me to" Mudcat by getting me involved in the gravestone symbolism thread in '98 or '99.

And since I have a summertime nursery colony of Little Brown Bats (that's the variety, and also a description) between the bedroom ceiling and the roof. As a result of annual July (usually) bat adventures, I know a lot about Little Brown Bats and bats in general. Oh, and they like me, so Bat Goddess seemed appropriate. . . I'm also sometimes referred to as a Cat Goddess (or maybe just a cat mat) and I get some trade pubs with the title of Type Goddess (I'm a typographer now digital prepress production tech).

I wanted to register as Jock, 'cos I used that name in all the years, I ran [and sang {sic} in] folk clubs around the London area in the 60s and 70s. Mudcat would not let me use that; so I settled for the Italian spelling. Many years ago when I lived in Richmond Surrey, and had a slate at the best cafe ever, called L'Auberge, that's how the Italian family who ran the joint, spelled my name. Mega boring or what!!

Well, me real name is Jeremy Welch, but when I signed up here, I used a commonly-used stage name of mine (Michael O'Quinn), since I figured if anyone saw me in performance, they'd recognize it, and if they met me otherwise, I probably wouldn't recognize them, anyhoo.

Me mum did it, being a Noffshoot of a Nold New Enkland clan whut got all their darn names from the Old Testament, their clothes from Saks and thier news from Walter Cronkite. Which is why I now live out West. :>) But it is handy, being short, and rare enough.

Well, this is a deja vu thread for me, too.

When I first visited, and soon joined, Mudcat, I was a relative internet neophyte, and I wasn't sure how good an idea it would be to use my real name. I've had various nicknames in my life, but the only one that some folks still call me is the one my grandpa always called me: Jeanie. Partly to avoid confusion with other "Jeans," "Jeannes," "Jeanies," and "Jeannies," and partly because I like the magical connotation, I decided to be "Genie" at Mudcat.

It was pretty easy to get a name from that.

Although I prefer being called "snogs", as it seems to have stuck after Mr Happy once mistyped my name in the Mudchat.

Been through it all before but....
Lots of other Rogers on the 'Cat. Being a child of the '50s I enjoy the rough and ready sound of the skiffle/jug band type of band, play no instruments other than washboard and kazoo... and if skiffle is defined as music played on battered, home made, crude and often out of tune instruments - well that's my voice to a T!

But I'm now in Robin Hood country (Nottingham) and am getting interested in Lord Byron (he's buried in my local church). I know there is a BYRON in Georgia & BYRON Wines in California, anyone have any connections with anything Byron?
And thirdly as my christian name is BARRIE, I noticed there is a town of that name near Toronto which is having a 150th birthday. Anyone from Barrie?

Actually, there's another version of this story out there in one of the old threads.

However, in the days of old, before the internet was host to many many many XXX websites....

My name is Victoria, I go by Vicki, and when I was small and spent lots of time in the woods alone, there was a red fox that I saw often just about the time I was 'spozed to be going home. I have no idea if the fox was a vixen or a dog, but I imagined her to be a sort of girl friend who came out to tell me when to get home so mother wouldn't be angry with me.

Thus, when I started making greeting cards for my friends, I called my "publishing company" (mind you, I'm still only about 10!) Vixen Grafix. And when I started writing songs, I called *that* venture Vixen Muzik. (neither one has made a penny)

Along the way, I got some education, and I spell better now. However, in the process of getting the education, I discovered the philosophical concept of the chiasmus, and the anatomical structure of the same name, and have developed an interest in the myriad of memes represented by the character "X" and how it's formed by two "V"s, and so on and so forth...

So when I first got on the net (anybody remember Megabyte University??) back in the early 90's, socially speaking, Vixen seemed somehow safer than my real name, and I've stuck with it, even though its e-meaning has e-volved into something I really have nothing to do with (those XXX sites I mentioned earlier...)

Crowd estimates at the festival were roughly the same as for Woodstock. It was the largest crowd to ever see Jimi Hendrix perform. (Much of the crowd at Woodstock and Isle of Wight had already left before Jimi came on stage.) It was a hoot. As far as I know, that is Byron's only claim to fame.

A name is such a personal choice ...when you were born you probably didn't have much input on selecting your name. So this time around ... (continuing hesitatingly)

If you wanted to stay with your pattern you could now be CarolD. Or for a nod to recorded music: CarolCD. Obviously, my favorite choice is GUEST. It's so easy to remember, and handy, too.

Those that know you much better will no doubt have better suggestions. But in the end, like Shakespeare alluded in the quote above, "What's in a name?"

Therefore bog = mud lion = cat.

Upton's Ghost
Thomas Bound, who came of an old Upton family, a puritan in religion and politics, was churchwarden in 1640 and 1641. He became Captain of an Upton volunteer corps in the Civil War and helped to turn out the popular rector, William Woodforde. He probably devised the scheme by which the bridge and the church were captured in 1651.

Bound, a grim and covetous man, is said to have disposed of two of his three wives, forging the will of his last wife on her deathbed. He took his own life by drowning in the Causeway pool between his homes at Soley's Orchard in Rectory Road and Southend Farm. There are many legends of his haunting the neighbourhood, sometimes on horseback, and frequent fancied sightings; so, eventually his ghost had to be exorcised.

His bones were later removed from the parish church; his skull was taken by a tradesman and became a drinking cup. Even now, when a pony gets out on the road, there are people who shut their doors exclaiming "Here he comes again!"


The Ghost of Thomas Bound's Cat lurks around every corner. The one eyed cat who travelled extensively around England, at the time of Oliver Cromwell, was a fiddler of the first order. He reached notes other fiddlers could not reach, he jugged and reeled in a manner unaccustomed to his feline breed, and he danced his way from tavern to tavern following the sound of music, song and laughter. Thomas Bound may still be seen riding on his horse in Rectory Road by Soley's Orchard, but the cat is only seen these days on the occasion of Upton's Folk Frolics on May Day Bank Holiday. His wooden leg is heard thumping the boards in time to his jigs and reels. His tail flaps wildly at the feet of a Morris Man (whose dancing steadily diminishes with the passing of time and beer).

Losing his leg in a Worcester fight, his present leg was a gift of oak from a tall dark cavalier who hid in an old tree.

    My name is Fred Miller, but I thought it would be more fun to choose a name reflecting a particular interest of mine, so my name would habitually reflect that interest above any topic I commented on. "Fred Miller" seemed to do this nicely. (I *told* you not to mention nyaah nevermind.) However -- seriously for once now -- I abandoned that out of respect for the memory of the then-recently-deceased, universally-beloved, LR Mole. A guy like that, you just retire his jersey number. So then I picked this foreshortening of The Pooka Fergus MacPhellimey, a character of the great Flann O'Brien/Myles na gCopaleen, whose writing I admire and shamelessly plagiarize. I would have used the whole name but that might have seemed a bit ostentatious. :) Invisible sixfoot rabbits had nothing to do with it but sometimes I steal that image too, what the Hell. I have seen "pooka" defined as "a mischievous Irish devil". Well what in the Divil comes over ye all nyaah nevermind. (And another thing: we once had a Himalayan cat named The Pooka *Furball* MacPhellimey, whom my wife wrote in for a local office at an election & then demanded that the officials illegally reopen the voting machine in order to correct their failure to report her frivolous vote -- which they did. Anything else ya wanna know? Don't answer that.)

It's my name. No, really. Alright, if you want the long explanation. In the re-enactment world I am known (& occasionally infamous) as either Raedwulf or Rafe Watkyn. Watkyn is a variation on my mundane surname, Ralph is my mundane middle name (after my maternal g/father). The Germanic root of Ralph is raed + wulf "wolf counsel", which pretty much fits me to a T!

There are many who know me only, or principally, as Raedwulf. If you shout it across a crowded room, only I will look round... How real do you want a name to be?! ;)

I've got several names, depending on context. Raven & Green Knight are ones that have been given to me. Neither are inappropriate. I've also been known to answer to "Oi, you hairy bastard!" ;)

Well, my real name is Bruce, but my friends call me--Bruce. However, when I tried to use that as my post name on the Mudcat, I found another Bruce had already taken the name (the nerve). So I figured brucie would work. A few people warned me that I would be called that FOREVER, and wiseass that I am, I decided to ignore them. Ya gotta know that an ounce of prevention IS worth a pound of cure.

It's too late to change it now, but if that's the heaviest burden I have to bear this year, I'll be a fortunate guy. Besides, no one here would make fun of a guy's name, right? My Tennessee kinfolk were nice, down-to-earth people with good hearts and bad education. We used to go to my Aunt Ninabelle and Uncle Zion's house for Sunday dinner. I'd be in my Sunday best, and Uncle Zion would tell me I was "sWAYve 'n dEE-boner," meaning of course, suave and debonnair. So my Mudcat moniker is a play on that mispronunciation.

It was my original first name until it was changed at age 3 when my mother remarried. As the eldest of Donuel Blagg Sr. it turns out I have 5 half brothers and one half sister I have never met.

Although I contacted Donuel Sr. by phone and sent a video, none of his kids have ever contacted me. I suppose they have their reasons despite some live only a day trip away.

In the late 1960s I was a member of a organization that focused on African culture. Like other members of that group, I wanted an African personal name. My man friend at that time, Zayd, said he would give me an African name. And because I just love loved loved him, I said I would accept the name that he selected. So out of the kindness of his soon to be cheatin heart, Zayd gave me a choice of two names-either "Aziza": Arabic for "{one who}is rare & precious" or "Azizi": Kiswahili with the same meaning.

Back in those days {and now} a lot of female names given to African Americans from the Arabic language and other language sources {as well as names which are creatively 'made up'} end with the 'ah" sound like "Keisha", "Maisha", "Malika","Fatimah", "Kadisha", "Alia"... I liked the idea of "Azizi" because it sounded more unique.

But in those days {and still today} there was also a brand of makeup called "Aziza". The REAL reason why I choose 'Azizi' instead of 'Aziza' is that I didn't want to give somebody the opportunity to look at me and say "Aziza, you forgot your make-up, girl.."

So I've been 'Azizi' now for 37 years-and I try to live up to that name with or without wearing makeup.

My real name is Dewaine. Everyone Pajoratively calls my Dewey. the ewwweee!!! part of Dewey being stressed in the pronunciation (as well as the volume)

My co-workers of the past and present often seem to chant to me the following way: Dew wee! Dew wee! Dew wee! Like you might at a United Auto Workers of AFL-CIO Meeting, with everyone's fists in the air in a momentus state of solidairity. I never can tell if the chanting is affectionate or as mentioned above pajorative.

Usually the words "screwy" is instictually placed in front of my name, by whoever decides to call me by this name.

I am actually not that fond of the name itself, but I choose it online at sites I visit for the following reasons:

It allows me to stay humbled in conversations, If I say something stupid or overtalk, it allows me the option to blame it on my name, Someone might say on a message board for example, "Oh well, that's Screwy Dewey for you. Once again he's opened his mouth again before actually using his brain."

Also I'm proud of being Screwy Dewey, being a little "out there" and of the wall at times keeps my mind and heart open to new ideas, while at the same time. gives me the opportunity by others to be forgiven for having said something dumb.

My biggest weakness is sensitivity to the opinions of other people and self-consciousness in general, also one of my other weaknesses is a preference to being alone, I seem to be able to entertain myself quite thoroughly. I like to think, and I think best when I am by myself. I also hate crowds and loud places, but I don't necessarily hate people. I am just very picky about the types of people I like to be around.

I don't like bars, vulgarity and public filth in general. My prejudices are that I like quiet, sensible, moral people as well as stimulating non-reactionary conversations. I don't like gossip, loose talk, or television pop culture. My T.V. is unplugged and I rarely use it. I watch Foxnews at work or at Mom and Dad's (the right wing propaganda network)

My biggest strength is that I am a positive thinker: I haven't had one stressful day in 3 years, and I'm not just making that one up! It is a complete and total fact. I have a life free of worry, my brain has been been so stimulated through years of sedentary desires and positive emotions and through the principle of auto-suggestion, negativity just doesn't enter it anymore ever!

I don't own a cell phone, and I refuse to join the ratrace! I want to do things my way. I don't kill myself for any employer anymore, I've got my bills low enough that I know can do whatever I wish to, whether job retraining, starting a new business etc.

Sure I am a little behind on things, yet I now know I have an inner gift to succeed through a creative force that is much beyond me and yet is part of me (i.e. God)

Intention to me is more important than my timeline towards futuristic events, I feel eventually, any human being, through the infinite intellignece of the interactive God of his consciouness, will develope his-her purpose from within, daily, interactively and exponentially.

I also believe that who I BECOME EVERY SINGLE DAY, And who my higher consciousness becomes every single day, is much more important than the tanglible instant gratification of the money that is not yet in my hands, we all arrive through intention in our own individual ways and through own own creative timeline when we are connected to our source (i.e. God)

My name was given to me by my dear children over on the Mother of All BS Threads. I believe I am the only Mudcat thread to have actually become a sentient entity and, thus, to qualify for membership. I believe the transformation from just a thread to living-breathing-walking-talking-rockin'-an'-rollin' member came about somewhere around the three or four-thousand post mark. I really don't remember. I don't post too often, generally only when some of my children get out of hand and need to either be slapped around a little or have their meds adjusted.

I am a pilot for a company that delivers freight throughout the state of New Mexico. By the nature of our work we have to fly really early in the day and late in the day, with a lot of lounging around the airport when everyone else is "working". Somebody, somewhere, came up with the pejorative name of "Freightdog" to describe or demean us - us as in all the other hundreds of pilots who are sleep deprived denizens of the less popular haunts of the airport. As with so many other things, however, the demeaning aspect of the name became a badge of honor. Now, to be refered to as a Freight Dog has a certain mystical charm about it. (Although I've run into a couple of freighters that got downright physical when referred to as such!) Young freighters are called package puppies.

I, however, consider myself a true freightdawg - a mangy, scraggly ol'cur that mothers shrink from and little children throw rocks at. However, we all consider ourselves darn good pilots and if you received a package this week, or sent one out, or had to depend on a medical specimen being delivered to a distant laboratory, or needed a legal document shipped overnight, chances are you had to depend on one of us to make it happen.

And besides, when I'm a mile or so above the earth, I've got the best office in the whole building.

I used to be Ely, which would have been my nickname had I been named "Elizabeth" as my mother's boss suggested (unfortunately, I already had an Aunt Liz and my mother's family is full of Betties so it had to be something different).

However, cookie issues brought that to an end so I had to pick something else. "Scoville" was chosen on a whim after an afternoon at the National Museum of Funeral History--Sayers & Scoville is a hearse company. I like antique cars and have always had a little bit of a morbid streak. (A friend of mine has a horse named Scoville for a similar reason--he's black and sometimes pulls a hearse at Civil War reenactments.) It also doesn't resemble any of my other online names.

I moved to Farlington, a tiny village in the wilds of North Yorkshire, UK. I used to joke that our local pub, The Blacksmith's Arms, (now immortalised in the Obit: Sam Smiths Bans Live Music thread) was a bit like The Slaughtered Lamb fictional pub featured in the opening scenes of An American Werewolf in London. You know, the scene where the two hitch hikers stumble in from the storm and the whole place goes quiet and the locals stare at them. They then start asking awkward questions about why there is a pentangle above the fireplace and are ultimately asked to leave. While stumbling across the moor at night there is an eerie howl and they are attacked by (at that point) an unidentified beast. It doesn't take a huge leap of imagination to get to 'The Beast of Farlington'. This was also a nickname I gave to my neighbours Spaniel until he had 'the op'!

I used to be quiet, shy Maureen. When I started calling Barn dances for I neede a new personality so I left Maureen at home and took Mo to gigs. Seems there is another Mo on Mudcat.
Didn't realise that I was changing my sex as well, till Mudcatters started calling me "man"
Come to think, my Dad was "Mo" in the army (he was called "Alfred Morris Brown" after a preacher) and I was Mo once in my life before. The news that he had a daughter was bawled out be an NCO "Mo. Little Mo's arrived" I've never won Wimbledon though.

My real first name. Named after a Great Grandfather. I just happen to have lived in Maryland all my life, and if I had a nickel for all the times people asked me if I was "named after the river", I'd be a rich man today. My last name is Savage which, like Severn, is both a town and a river in Maryland. I have no middle name, fortunately. Questions about two rivers are quite enough, thanks. Three, actually with all my Yook Mudcat friends asking their own questions.

It has nothing to do with which hand I use. It's my politics. I consider myself to be quite a bit to the left of today's political parties in the USA. I believe it's the true patriotic path. I believe in America, and I believe in the family of man. I think we have an obligation to each other and if we, in our zeal for each other, occasional pay a welfare fraud then so be it. I also think we have the obligation to protect each other from those that would do us harm, those that abuse us or take advantage. I think America is a teriffic idea that still offers promise after all these years. Greed and bigotry are the only things that stand in the way of that promise.

Been buying 2ndhand books for 40+years,2ndhand records ditto, will look nearly anywhere, like doing serendipity in libraries(reference section) a,d among my own volumes, collect quotes and quotation books, the former into my own self-indexing notebooks. My lady-friend cut out a quotation about Shakespeare's Autolycos, where he's described as a "snapper-up of unconsidered trifles". That's what she thought I was doing, the trifles bit being her considered opinion. I offer Offer trifles, so it looked (w)right.
