Hi there
I have that lovely poem.

INCHES AND MILES
(David Mallett)
As recorded by David Mallett on "David Mallett" (1978)

1. And how many times have we talked to each other
Like sister and brother, like mother and child?
How many fires have we sat by together
In keeping from the weather when the wind is running wild?
And how come we never married? How is it that we've buried
All the feelings that we've carried for such a long, long while?
And speaking of feelings, I feel that the distance
Between us is growing by inches and miles.

2. And how well I remember when we came together!
I taught you to listen and you taught me how to care.
But now as I whisper the words to the love songs
We once learned together, the music is not there.
And now my fire needs attending and my faith needs amending.
For it seems there is no ending to my feelings and my fears.
And while I am talking, I feel that the distance
Between us is growing by minutes and years.

3. And now like some beggar I stare at your window.
Your candles are burning and your love is inside.
But doors can't be opened by wishes nor tokens,
And all things have endings and beggars have their pride.
And now I know I should be leaving, but my feelings are deceiving.
And you're standing in the doorway and you're trying hard to smile,
And while you are smiling, I feel that the distance
Between us is growing by inches and miles.

* * *

It is very sweet, and I cry when I read it. Just now, I have to leave the man I love the most, so it feels written just for me.

A fine song, and done beautifully by Dave.

oh darn. I hate lost love. Are you sure you have to leave him and it can't be saved somehow? (Unless there is abuse etc.)

Dear mary garvey
Thank you for your warm and kind heart. This man has been the love of my life and it is the same the other way around. We are both married, but not with each other. I always called him at the office, but now he shall retire and I will not have the possibility to contact him.
We are not young anymore, but there is no difference between love when you are young or old. Almost 23 years have gone since we met and of course my heart is bleeding.
Take care and CARPE DIEM         Kerstin from Sweden

Dear Kerstin from Sweden,

Thanks so much for posting the lyrics. I've been looking for them for a while.

I was touched by what you said and being a romantic I have faith you will both find a new way to love at a distance. True love is impossible to leave behind.

Thanks again.

From: kendall

I often sing that one, and, here's another of the same genre:

CIRCLE OF FRIENDS
by David Mallett

I've been drinking too hard
Smoking much more
There's a face and a memory
Behind every door,
The life that you lead
Is the life that you choose
But, the games you are playing
Are the ones that I lose.

There's no time for beginning
No means to the end
And, I'm outside your circle of friends
And it's the same old sad story
Of pain in the end
And, I'm outside your circle of friends.

I went to this party, and everyone came
All the pretty young dancers
With no faces or names
But the night was soon over
And the room seemed so bare
And I'm standing here throwing
Good bys in the air.
And I feel like an oak tree that's caught in the wind
And my branches are too old to bend.

There's a ghost in the hallway
And he sings an old song
Of a soldier and a maiden
Who's love was so strong
But he died in some battle
Far over the sea
And she walks by the water
And weeps quietly
It's the same old sad story
Of pain in the end
And I'm outside your circle of friends.

Hello,

Great songs from a great writer. I'm doing quite a few of Mr. Mallets songs these days and I always have someone comment on them when I do.
