Oughtta be real interesting considering how many folks Lomax was able to record inside the various penatenturies in the South. Though his style seemed at times somewhat condesending, that is nothing compared to what he accomplished in recording so many folks. We owe him a lot of gratitude, fir sure. That, coupled with his sensitivity to the social and political implications of his subject, make this book worth reading, even for people who aren't blues fans-- |

The original book is a classic and surely a document of the greatest importance for blues history. There's also a film, BTW, which was in Lomax's American Patchwork series, and has a great collection of performances. Unfortunately, not available on DVD... |
