Would I were the sort who could drop every thing and book a Concorde just to be there, and I would too!!

But I am sorry to say I haven't quite met all the quals yet for that sort of lifestyle! :>}

Wish I'd seen this thread earlier, Linda and I would have turned up -especially if Raphie was going as well. It's usually a good session, although sometimes it can be a bit dificult dodging all the fiddle bows. You can get some unusual instruments too - like a cross between a bassoon and a serpent.

Is Peg going to be around anywhere on Thursday (tomorrow) night ?

Last nights sessions was grand I really enjoyed it. It was mainly fiddles and squeeze boxes. Someone Dared Micca to sing 'what shall we do with the drunken sailor'...so he did and Peg sang too. It was lovely to meet Ralphie too.

Peg is heading off somewhere tomorrow and we have really enjoyed her visit.

Catsph....
At least he did the clean version!
For U.S. readers....It's a typical old fashioned London Pub..Not many of them left, sadly.
Very welcoming, worth a visit if you're ever in our country. particularly if you play the fiddle..!
It does become a bit manic and fast for my taste, sometimes..must be the adrenalin, or the beer. but, newcomers are made welcome, and are included and encouraged to play, whatever...
Because of work, I won't be able to get there that often, but it's a great consolation to know that it exists.
I raise my glass to the guys and gals (and the landlord!) who have managed to revive the evening, after the PEL scare of last year.
Onwards and Upwards Ralphie

PS You should try it sometime Noreen!

Bit far to go for the evening, unfortunately. Glad you all had fun. Is Ralphie really as shy and retiring as he appears, Cat?

There's a *CLEAN* version of 'Drunken Sailor'?

MMario, the amount of "on the fly" editing that went on as I was singing, to find the LEAST filthy verses, was amazing!! Especially since the Shantyman I met when I was at sea and who is still my Shanty Hero, Bert Grey of Shetland, bless him) always regarded Drunken Sailor as a test piece for Shantymen, He claimed (and he had sailed before the mast in the 1930s in Scandanavian sailing ships) that the First verse was the ONLY one fixed and stayed the same, the skill of the shantyman was to create a new verse each time reviewing the Parentage, sexual proclivities, habits and physical characteristics of the crew, and displaying his versifying skills by his improvisation skills. His version included verses in Russian, Swedish Finnish and a few other languages.

A great pub and a very fine lively session! I enjoyed hearing so much English music for a change from all the Irish seisiuns in Boston...

I am off to Glastonbury tomorrow for at least a week; but will be back in London on Friday the 24th; we're planning to go back to the Chequers to see the Arizona duo Bucket of Witches on the 25th (unless a Burns Supper is found!)

Larry; give my best to Ralph; I brought his number and was actually going to call him tonight to see if we might meet up this trip! Too bad we have missed each other!
Please give him my love (and to you and Genie) and have him email me! (or you can PM me and get my phone number to give him). I will be back in England the last week of May and could certainly make a side trip to Wiltshire; it has been a while...

all the best,
Peg

Well catsPHiddle, at least you and Ralphie should be able to have a conversation without either having to stoop.

I can't imagine why Micca should feel that he needed to clean up his song for the crowd at the Cricketers - I've heard (and sung) some very raunchy songs in that establishment.

BTW for anyone who doesn't know the Cricketers, it is a musicians session with plenty of fiddles, but usually a reasonable balance of melodeons etc. The music is quite varied, English, Irish, Scottish and other things. There's usually nibbles and a free beer for performers. At the end there's a few songs - shanties seem to be the most popular. It get quite packed, but the atmosphere is quite something - highly recommended.
