My son, Casey, plans to travel alone to Sweden in February, 2003. He's a fiddler and is looking to connect with a teacher, music places, and other traditional cultural events in and around Stockholm. Does anyone have any good contacts in Sweden for him? It would make his trip more meaningful (and it would calm this anxious mother down!) Their web site is the best resource i can think of for things musical in Sweden. And in this country too. they can be found here: Nor. Cal. Spelmanslag and here is a place to find out about hardanger fiddle playing not exactly swedish, it is norwegian, and not exactly fiddle as it is a different instrument, but lovely. I plan to be in Sweden early/middle July this year, based nea r - not in - Stockholm. I'm looking for advice on where to hear muysic and if possible attend workshops (intermediate fiddle, beginner dancing, singing for non-Swedish speaker) accessible to someone not fluent in any Scandinavian language. I've looked at the Swedish trad music links via Bassen's clicky ; it's TOO vast though so far I have noted one contact to e-mail, Nivren Folkdansgille , which in Sndsvall, 400 km n of Stockholm may be too far away for me. |

I took a workshop with her once and she was really engaging and taught some great techniques. Here (hopefully) is a link to her website and it looks like she teaches regularly. Although he is American, he speaks fluent Swedish and has been awarded a bronze medal in the Swedish Traditional Fiddle Championship. He often leads tours of Sweden, and specializes in music arts and culture. He knows many Swedish Fiddle (fiol) and nyckelharpa (key fiddle) players. I met her and her Swedish mother at Scandinavian fiddle, dance, nickelharpa workshop weekend in Yorkshire a few years ago. Recently I was at a fiddle workshop in Ireland and I thought Emma would be there, but I had her mixed up with Shetland fiddler Jenna Reid! |

Tim apparently leads a small group to Sweden late June to mid July (partly overlapping with my trip) but I don't know their itinerary. I understand many visitors go to the music events in Dalarna province ~ 2-6 July (a few days too early for me). |
