BS: Hit me with some baby names!!!!

02 Feb 03 - 12:41 PM (#880664)
Subject: BS: Hit me with some baby names!!!!
From: Beccy

Okay, everyone. Put on your thinking caps. I need some baby names. We have about 3 months to do the job (after that is the ultrasound that will hopefully tell me to whom I'm talking when I speak to mah bellay.)

Parameters:
Not boring
Not toooooo outlandish
Preferably of Celtic, Gaelic or Norse derivation

This being my fourth, I'm running a little low on the creativity for names. Thanks!

Named my son Owen as it means 'young warrior' in Welsh. Would've spelled it 'Owain' if I had it to do over, but was unaware of a different spelling at the time. Did encourage him to change it if he wanted to, but so far he hasn't felt the need. Rhian for a girl's name. Don't know what it means. A little partial to Welsh names, obviously. Congratulations, anyway!

Remember, this is something that the kid is going to have to live with all his/her life. I recall an acquaintance during the earlier Tolkien fever who named her son Bilbo...and you can imagine what he was called in school! He did decide to rename himself when he was about ten: "John, my name is John."

As a teacher, I'd just like to put in my twopenn'orth.
1. Give your child the full name, so that he/she has the choice of using the full name or the short or nickname version.

2. If you choose a name which may be pronounced in several ways, let the teacher know which one you are using. eg Sean, Aaron, Michele, Megan, Gawain. The same if you choose Irish, Gaelic or Welsh names in a part of the world which does not recognise the spelling rules. Some of us recognise the Cusack's names now, but not all of us. Our fault. When I first came here, there was another Penny, from Florida, who posted under another user name, and I pm'd her about the confusion. She told her given name was Penelope, but her teacher had commented about it, mispronounced it, and she had dropped it entirely for the short form. And one of our staff went on a literacy course where the tutor, speaking of Harry Potter, pronounced Hermione as Hermeeown. Don't let others' idiocy cramp your style, but support your child with it.

3. Avoid at all costs such coinings as Cherry Orchard, Pearl Button (real examples) or other things of that sort.

Otherwise, I would read a lot of stories, and choose a name that belonged to a character with the right sort of characteristics, and hadn't picked up anything negative since. eg, I used to like Gareth, until I had to teach a child of that name who was utterly unlike the Arthurian hero.

I can honestly say that my life has improved since I changed my name to Rhiannon, although it did cause some problems to old friends!

Please consider what possible nicknames future classmates might find. Kids will be cruel, and they'll find something nasty to call anyone if they want to, but you don't need to make it easy for them. (And don't forget aobut the initials.)

Owen, Sean, and Gareth are rather nice for boys, and Aine and Alana are pretty for a girl. And before you name a girl something starting with a C/K sound, please consider this: among my friends there are two Colleens, Kathleen, Kelly, Kayla, Caitlin, Cate, Katie, and Cailey. (try saying them out loud) Gets confusing when we're all in the same room.

I always thought that Fiona is a nice Gaelic/Celtic name. Please, PLEASE don't stick him/her with something that they can be easily kidded with. Or when shortened, makes an unpleasant word. Or where the three letters or two plus the last name makes something rather absurd. Remember the college football player named Isiah Moses Hipp? I.M.Hipp. I rest my case.

Not sure how to put this . . . erm . . . I suggest that you treat some of the name sites with EXTREME caution.

Firstly, Rustic Rebel, I typed in several names on the "Kabalarians" site and, strangely, each one came back with a report saying "[your name] has characteristics that undermine your long-term happiness and success in life.". Why might that be, do we think?

And, Jude L, a Welsh names site without "Myfanwy"? I mean to say ...

Gray D

P.S. Pay heed to yer man Meixner when he types "remember the child has to wear the name to school, not you." Wise words, oh, wise, wise words.

I don't know your surname, but I would make sure it matches the child's first name. Lasairfhiona Jones just looks a bit silly (which means that I'll probably never pick one of those lovely Irish names for my children, they just don't go with the Dutch surname).

Oh, lord ... don't call the poor thing Myfanwy. She'll either end up Muhvvy or Fanny.

You could try this site

One of my god-daughters is Elinor Haf (Haf meaning summer - born in August) and it's quite common to have a name than refers to the month or season in which you were born, or similar. i.e. Haf/summer, Medi/September, Mai/May, Eira/snow (all girls) - Gwenhwyfer means 'smile of June' and is also "Guinevere" (or however that's spelt). Come to think of it, boys' second names tend to be more geographical - named after their home areas, or rivers, like Dyfed, Ceiriog, Arfon, etc.

I quite like Bryn or Emyr for boys. Best not saddle them with anything other nationalities might find difficult to pronounce, like Llew.

There was a time when I almost convinced my daughters their original names were Ga-snoogle-snort and Primate Proboscis. Unfortunately their mother would not go along with it.

Whatever you choose you will love no matter what second thoughts you think you might have. Just be sure that you and your spouse agree before the birth. Our first daughter was born after a long labor and finally a C-Section. After it was over the nurse asked me for the name and I gave her what I thought we had agreed to. It was later, after the birth certificate was filed, that my wife told me that she had decided she didn't like the name.

Whne our next daughter was born my wife insisted on having the right to choose the name herself.

I wonder why that marriage didn't work out....

Pronunciation of Áine varies with area in Ireland, but somewhere between Awn-ya and Arn-ya. It is of course the Irish equivalent of Ann or Anna.

Make sure you teach people how to pronounce it properly if you do use the name; I know an Áine over here in England who accepts that people will pronounce her name Ay-na, which to me is a horrible corruption of a beautiful name.
(And to get the accented Á, try holding down the AltGr key [to the right of space bar on my keyboard] while typing the letter A.)

I love the name Declan too, Jenny. I had a major crush on a Declan many years ago- and no, it's not mudcatter Declan. :0)

My last name is Patterson and most with that name are often nicknamed "Pat." My parents made it simple and named me Patrick. But do be sure it's a liveable name. Truth: I went to school with a girl named Sharon Peters.

We were fortunate enough to bring our first son (both of ours are adopted) home from the hospital and name him ourselves. He is Tristan Alan. Our second son came to us in foster care at 6 months of age, already named Michael. When we were able to adopt him, we changed his middle name to Dennis. The point of this tale is that in both cases, the middle names were the names of two of my closest friends. About a year after Tris was born, Alan, only 42, had a massive heart attack and died. Just after Michael's formal adoption, Denny was diagnosed with a terminal cancer and died about two years later. I now have friends who say that if we have any more kids, they will pay me not to use their names!

But say, if you want some really hot names, how about Shadrach, Meshach, or Abednigo?

One other thing.......We knew Tristan would have problems and have been very lucky his autistic tendencies are as limited as they are, but he is well delayed and one of his worst problems is with speech. Had we thought through it a bit, we would have picked a name which would have been easier for him to deal with. We didn't know what the mental retardation would encompass, just that there would be "some," and it could have been much worse, but a simpler name might have been a good idea. Then again, I look at him every day and think, "Yeah, but who else could Tris be but Tris???"

Noss (Freyja's daughter--supposed to be an incomparably sweet, gentle little girl).   Come to think of it, "Freyja" isn't bad, either.

Sunniva--I believe she was an early Saint. I can't recall if she was Norwegian and ended up in Ireland or Irish and ended up in Norway, or if I'm completely wrong all around, but it's a neat name.

Kjarstin (SHARE-stin)--needs no explanation, but it's my sister-in-law-to-be's name, and it's just slightly unusual without being outlandish.

I'm not much help. In the unlikely event that I ever have kids, I've decided they get one normal name and one weird name, so they don't have to be completely conformist but don't get stuck explaining themselves all the time. My given name is Alethea Sojourner (for Sojourner Truth, the abolitionist/feminist) and I'm so tired of people mispronouncing and misinterpreting it that I'm about ready to change it to "Jane" and live the rest of my life in peace.

If you like Mike Ripley's books, Angel's sister is called Finnoula, nicknamed Fifi. Should go with a Celtic surname.

Although I don't believe in it at all, the kabalarians website is good fun, and bizarrely has seemed to be really accurate for a load of people I know. We printed out the analysis for an ex boss of mine and put it on the wall as it was so accurate. Mine hit me spot on. Funnily enough, I only once came across the "[your name] has characteristics that undermine your long-term happiness and success in life." phrase, and it was for a person who hated her name and was considering changing it!

I tried a lot of different names and varieties of names on the Kalabrian website (mine and friends) for most of which the site said that they had characteristics which undermine etc, some of which propmted messages about the problems that could be caused by an inapt surname or birthday etc etc etc.... and all of which were urging one to order " a more indepth meaning" .... now to me this sounds remarkably like "we want your money". You may say that this is a cynical attitude which it probably is .... funny though... cynicism was one of the few characteristics that however I spelt my name(s) the site never suggested was one of my characteristics.

Cynical? Oh, I don't know.......I tried entering "Asshole" as a first name and then "Dipshit" followed by "Scumbag"......Here are the results:

*********************************************************************

The name of Asshole has given you an appreciation for many beautiful and refined aspects of life--music and art, literature, drama--and the outdoors, where you find much peace and relaxation, but it creates a far too sensitive nature. You sense and feel much that you do not understand, and sometimes you are alarmed at your thoughts and wonder about their origin. You rarely experience the tranquility that comes with stability of thinking or emotional control. At times, you are very inspired, desiring to be with people and to entertain others as the "life of the party," while at other times you are aloof and choose to remove yourself entirely from association. You crave understanding and affection but your intensity of desire and your self-consciousness prevent you from finding the happiness you desire. You have suffered many disappointments and misunderstandings because of your inability to express your inner thoughts. You could experience sensitivity in the heart, lungs, or bronchial organs, causing tuberculosis, asthma, or depletion of your energies.
While the first name of Asshole has some constructive qualities, it has characteristics that undermine your long-term happiness and success in life.

*********************************************************************

While your name of Dipshit gives you an intense desire to be of service to others, it brings out a practical, technical nature, and you become involved in fussy little details that detract from the fulfilment of your greater ideals. You are a very patient person and will work hard one step at a time to accomplish your goals. Not interested in large undertakings, you are content to live from day to day to save for your future. Always budgeting carefully, you do not believe in frivolous spending. You tend to be thorough in building a solid foundation of fact and logic, but you are not especially imaginative or investigative. You are particular and quite set in your way you want things to be done. Once you have made up your mind or formed an opinion it is not easily changed. Hence there is a restriction in friendships and business opportunities. This name stimulates urges and desires for which there is no creative outlet and the ensuing frustration creates nervous tension which centres in the region of the solar plexus and intestinal organs, causing constipation, intestinal trouble, boils, or growths. You feel emotional frustrations and disturbances that create irritability and a strong temper.
While the first name of Dipshit has some constructive qualities, it has characteristics that undermine your long-term happiness and success in life.

**********************************************************************

Your first name of Scumbag has given you creative ability, imagination along practical lines, and the patience to pay attention to detail for a while. Although you are attracted to technical, mechanical, scientific fields, you lack the patience to follow through with this interest. This name gives a certain amount of practicality to your thinking; but there is also a tendency to scatter your efforts for, although you want system and order and stability in your life, you are too apt to be distracted from the job you are doing and to become involved in spontaneous interests. You are good-natured, have a good sense of humour, and are fairly easy-going, making friends with those who enjoy a good time. A weakness of this name is a tendency to make promises which you have difficulty in keeping. You tend to be lavish in your tastes and to spend your money freely. You have a heart of gold and are always ready to give generously. Since your feelings are strong and you tend to be enthusiastic and boisterous, you burn up your energies quickly and indulge in quick-energy foods, sweets, and starches. This type of diet affects the functions of the liver, causing either suffering with gall stones, jaundice, or skin troubles.
While the first name of Scumbag has some constructive qualities, it has characteristics that undermine your long-term happiness and success in life.

I hadn't been to the kabalarians website for ages, so i checked it again - last time, it didn't have that bit on the end "it has characteristics that undermine your long-term happiness and success in life", but now it has. Obviously trying to drum up more business as everyone just goes there for the free brief analysis.

Grey D. - I never thought about that "11" business before! I know someone called Undeg (as it happens - it also means 'fair one') and I shall never think of her in quite the same way!

Ella, I think your fingers tripped themselves up on the "Hwyl" (Hywel?) one ... but, come to think of it, it would be great to be called 'hwyl'!

I just love the disclaimers at the end of each "analysis" at that sillyass Kabalarian site!!! Being an Equal Opps kinda' guy, I entered two completely disgusting names for a male and a female. Now for the life of me, I can't think of any "constructive qualities" that either of these names might impart!!!
**********************************************************************

While your name of Itsybitsydick gives you an intense desire to be of service to others, it brings out a practical, technical nature, and you become involved in fussy little details that detract from the fulfilment of your greater ideals. You are a very patient person and will work hard one step at a time to accomplish your goals. Not interested in large undertakings, you are content to live from day to day to save for your future. **********************************************************************

Your name of Gapingclam makes you easy-going and refined, but detracts from your physical vitality. You desire all the finer things in life--lovely clothes, home, furniture, and environment. However, procrastination is your worst enemy, and you find yourself lacking the ambition to make your dreams a reality. People are inclined to take advantage of your sympathetic, tractable nature. You naturally attract people with problems who seek your understanding and advice. You can give good advice although it is unlikely that you would follow it yourself. You would be most successful in situations where you can use your skills in diplomacy in handling people, but where you are not under pressure or required to carry responsibility and make decisions. It is difficult for you to be individual and make your own decisions, for you lack self-confidence. Your desire for sweet, rich foods could cause overweight, circulatory problems, or weakness in the kidneys.
While the first name of Gapingclam has some constructive qualities, it has characteristics that undermine your long-term happiness and success in life.

Seriously though, names wise, mine is Kathryn Arwen! I don't want to give my kids weird names when I have them, so girl 1 will be Claire Jennifer and girl 2 will be Rhianydd or Kiara Louise (haven't decided yet). Boy 1 will be Ian Richard, boy 2 will be Stephen Luke and boy and girl will be Claire Jennifer and Ian Richard.

They won't turn up for a fair few years yet though!!

Congratulations!

I named my youngest daughter Annika which comes from Scandinavia and has the meaning of "little Annie"
:o)

She loves it very much and I'm still happy with that decision.

Unfortunately *g* I never got married to an Irish guy. In this case I would have named a girl Aisling which means vision or dream.

My eldest daughter is called Barbara. A very old German name. And she really hates it. Sorry, baby *g*.
She should use the Irish version which is written Bairbre *eg*

Her second name is Martha but I'm not allowed to tell anyone, ehem...

What about Sabine ;-)

just kidding.....

All the best

Beccy, just spotted your question about how to get the accents over the vowels. Hold down the "Alt Gr" key when you type them - á é í ó ú.

See? We knew it had to have a use didn't we, class?

And Sian, next time you say hullo to Eleven . . . erm . . . don't mention my name . . . which is still "Gray D" with an "a", not an "e", although as I grow older, perhaps . . .

It would appear there are only a limited number of name discriptions at that site. My real name came back with exactly the same as one of the ones that Spaw posted above.

I didn't find a single name that did not undermine longterm happiness. Are there really any that they would say are good?

Ohhhh, I just couldn't resist the influence of the SPAW . . .dan, dan, daaaaaaaaaah!

Your name of Dickhead has created a most expressive nature, idealistic and inspirational, driven with a strong inner urge to be of service in some way that would uplift humanity as a whole. However, there is a tendency to assume too heavy a burden of responsibility for others, which leads to worry and undue concern. People with problems are drawn to you as they recognize you as one who has understanding and gives not only sympathy and comfort but provides also some constructive advice or assistance. You have a generous quality to your nature, but you must guard carefully against giving more than you receive or you will find yourself doing without because you have helped someone else. You love people, family, home, and friends and try to be a parent to the whole human race. While you have generally stable conditions in your personal life, you may experience some problems in business affairs through a tendency to be scattering and inattentive to details. Any health problems would show as tension in the nervous system brought on by worry.
While the first name of Dickhead has some constructive qualities, it has characteristics that undermine your long-term happiness and success in life.

1. Once when I had a summer job at a swimming pool, we found a forgotten five-year-old at the end of the day. She had a first name she couldn't pronounce clearly, and she didn't even know her last name. After a long wait, her big brother came back for her. It was pretty clear that he had been tongue-lashed up one side and down the other for forgetting her, and I fear he took it out on her as they walked home.

Moral: if your family speaks English, give your kid a name s/he can pronounce and that English-speakers can figure out. Forget names like "Rhianydd."

2. A trend I despise is the yuppie tendency to give girls masculine names like Madison or Holloway. It's as if the parents are saying, "You're rich enough to be an honorary male now." Grrr!

Oh . . ahh . . er . . on my M!crosoft keyboard there is a key immediately to the right of the space bar labelled "Alt Gr" (to the left of the spacebar is the ordinary "Alt" key).

I knew that French keyboards were weird 'cos I tried one in EuroDisney 'n' it took me about half an hour to type 30 or so words (normally only takes about 25 minutes), but I didn't know that US keyboards could be different.

A thought occurs . . . you're not using one of those fruity computers, are you? I have no idea what the keyboard layout of a Napple might look like.

You can sometimes get around problems inserting unusual letter formats by composing in your word processor and using the "Insert Symbol" (or similar) function, then cut and paste into the Mudcat.

Now... I suggested Eowyn as a girl's name (no snickers from the anti-Tolkien crowd, please...) but the hubby is thus far not impressed. His response was something like: "No... Un uh... No way. End of discussion."

As for boys? Gollee, I dunno. As I said, having had 3 boys I'm running a little shy. We've got a heckuva last name, so the first name has to be kind of on the shorter side.

sian, the reason I put Rhianydd is because when I was at Warwick Folk Festival, I met a girl with that name and she spelt it for me. I put the spelling she gave me.

Added to which, I find it easier to write (handwrite)!! :-) Mind you, I'm used to writing "ydd" at the end of some names, because I have a friend called Daffydd!

None of the names already on that site are my name with the original Greek spelling - the multitudes of differently spelled versions are extraordinary. I take that as a warning to keep away - so I shall, and rely on Spaw to reveal the worst!

If you like the Eowyn direction, there are some Anglo/Saxon names which are little used and not too unusual for a child. Eanswyth, Aldyth, Osyth, Alfrida, and others. Some of the more obvious ones, like Hilda, Edith and Mildred, were too used in the 19th century, though. The Early English saints were a good bunch of women to imitate.

For a boy there's Oisin. Named mine that. He was the poet feller who wander around tir na Nog with Naimh. My O has a story book about the legendary O where they are all wearing tie-dyed looking clothing. It's crazy.
