As I was watching Colin Powell's address to the UN on a Denver tv station, they broke in to the broadcast to report another school shooting.

They reported that the shooter fled the building and was being pursued. I'm trying now to find more in breaking news on the 'net. The shooter left the high school and headed to a nearby elementary school that was put in lock down.

I just found this at the KUSA tv website:

ADAMS COUNTY - Dozens of officers are at a high school after a teen fired shots outside the school Wednesday morning.

Ranum High School remains under a lockdown. All other schools in Adams County 50 are on heightened alert.

No one was injured in the shooting.

Craig Coleman with the Adams County sheriff's department said a male juvenile pulled a handgun inside the school. A school resource officer chased him outside where shots were fired. It is not known if the shots were fired in the air at someone or something.

The resource officer chased the teen and caught him near a park, about three blocks from the school.

Students were in class at the time of the shooting and the school remains under lockdown.

Police are investigating the incident and interviewing witnesses.

The school is located at 2401 W. 80th Ave. in Westminster.

Well, good news no one was hurt but sad that another gun was taken into school by a student. When I heard the initial news flash on KWGN the incident had just happened. As the student ran in the direction of another school in the neighborhood, they were concerned about his intent to get to the other school.

The story now says there was a verbal disagreement between two students, outside the school, when one of them pulled out the handgun. I am glad no one was hurt, but how sad, as you say, Alice, that one felt the need and right to bring a gun to school and tried to rely on it to solve an argument.

More from the tv news site linked above:

Investigators said that there was a verbal disagreement
around 8:30 a.m. between two students inside the
school. One of the students indicated that he had a
       gun under his jacket.

A school resource officer chased the male juvenile
outside where shots were fired. Investigators said they
don't know whether the student aimed at someone or
just fired up in the air.

The resource officer chased the 14-year-old and caught
him near a park, about three blocks from the school.

Students were in class at the time of the shooting.

Police are still investigating the incident and interviewing witnesses. School officials said that the teen will
       probably be expelled.

Meanwhile, a 16-year-old student at Eaglecrest High School in the Cherry Creek School District was arrested
Wednesday following threats of violence at that school.

The Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office says it will pursue charges. Officials say the threats were not related to
the situation at Ranum in any way.

School administrators have sent home letters making sure parents and students are aware of the situation.

I don't want to open old wounds,I got seriously abused the previous time I put the following question "Why have Guns in 21st Century USA?"

As a mature Brit I can't believe how a nation can accept the risks widespread, seemingly uncontrolled gun ownership imposes on a 21st century populace.

This time a safe ending ensued.................how about next time??

It's not uncontrolled, though- a 14 year old can't buy a gun. Not legally, anyway.

My thoughts exactly, jimlad.

KimC, they may not be able to buy them, but they have a ready supply through their families. That's how the kid in Casper blew his brains out after school one day; used dad's hunting rifle.

It is an old discussion and I don't think we'll ever be able to settle it, so...that's all I'm saying. Sorry, if I want to rehash it I'll go re-read the "Guns, to my friends at Mudcat" thread.

The reasons are myriad, but the biggest one is that pesky Second Amendment. It wasn't worded quite explicitly enough, and so anyone who prefers to rely on their own firepower for protection can use it to support their right to own guns. It's not the nation accepting the risks so much as a large number of individuals.

Well that's what happens when you live in a gun soicety, where every one has the right to carry guns.
Thank God we here in Britain don't have the rule, because to have a gun here you need a licence.

1. Re: "Investigators said they
don't know whether the student aimed at someone or
just fired up in the air."

It is dangerous to "just fire in the air." Spread the word. (Media people ought to know that.)

2. With every passing year, more young females are drinking alcohol and giving birth to more brain-damaged young. Marijuana breaks chromosomes and produces defective children. Many young people are doing drugs and drinking booze after childhoods that included far too many hours of low-class TV and violent computer games.

Then things like this happen and everybody is amazed that a kid flew off the handle under stress.
