I'm looking for the title and words to a John Prine song about a boy who is killed by a local commuter train "that was comin' so slow". In the song John sings about being on his way to the church "to shovel some snow" when he hears sirens on the train track.

Dear Bob,

I feel deep shame that I cannot come up with this lyric. I believe the song was on Prine's Sweet Revenge LP. I learned this song once, and can only recall fewer words than you have posted. I checked the DT, and it is not there. It is also not on the OH BOY Records Web-Site. I'll do a little web-search. There must be some compulsive Prine fan out there.

Bob,

I was right. For any John Prine lyrics, http://www.jpshrine.org/

BRUISED ORANGE (CHAIN OF SORROW)
(John Prine)
As recorded by John Prine on "Bruised Orange" (1978)

1. My heart's in the ice house, come hill or come valley,
Like a long-ago Sunday when I walked through the alley,
On a cold winter's morning to a church house, just to shovel some snow.
I heard sirens on the train track howl naked, gettin' nuder,
An altar boy's been hit by a local commuter,
Just from walking with his back turned to the train that was coming so slow.

2. You can gaze out the window, get mad, and get madder,
Throw your hands in the air, say "What does it matter?"
But it don't do no good to get angry; so help me, I know.
For a heart stained in anger grows weak and grows bitter,
You become your own prisoner as you watch yourself sit there,
Wrapped up in a trap of your very own chain of sorrow.

3. I been brought down to zero, pulled out, and put back there,
I sat on a park bench, kissed the girl with the black hair,
And my head shouted down to my heart: You better look out below.
Hey, it ain't such a long drop; don't stammer; don't stutter,
From the diamonds in the sidewalk to the dirt in the gutter,
And you carry those bruises to remind you wherever you go.

INSTRUMENTAL BREAK; REPEAT 1, 2, 1.

Yeah, I got the album wrong. The song Bruised Orange is on Prine's album of the same name, Bruised Orange. If John would entitle his songs in a more logical manner I could appear more competent.
