From: Morticia the new 'upgrade' of my windows player has caused it to have a small nervous breakdown.It is now extremely critical of my taste in music and refuses to record cd's.I have explained there are other options but it knows I'm bluffing....so what do you find best? Maybe I can scare it into behaving. |

From: Bill D I use several different ones...the one I prefer is JetAudio...it will even play RealAudio files. but WinAmp will play 'most' everything and has LOTS of plugins and is quite popular...and there are other special purpose things. What do you use it for mostly? |

From: Bill D be warned...*grin*...JetAudio is a BIG program...and there is a 'basic' 5.0 and a 5.0 Pro...which costs $30 US. There are also MANY places to get older versions, and versions with the registration code included. (I have 4.81, and am quite happy with it..) |

From: Cluin Media Player and Realplayer on the Web, though the interface with IE will cause the whole computer to put on blinders and not let me do anything else if it is having trouble connecting to the source. I'm not much of a Microsoft fan for most things but I've gotta admit those Windows Media files have a really nice sound quality to compression ratio, better than MP3 byte for byte. Of course, MP3 is far more universal so it won't disappear very soon. For MP3s, I use the MusicMatch Jukebox that came with my Dell. I used to use WinAmp on my old `puter and I liked that too. They're all pretty much similar. I just wish I hadn't upgraded the MusicMatch software when it prompted me there was a free upgrade available. Now I have nag screens popping up when I shut it down. |

From: JohnInKansas Since my switch to WinXP with a new machine, I haven't found much that won't play with the "built-in" Windows Media Player. The "new" versions seem to be greatly improved. Be advised that I don't do a lot of "aural surfing" though - just not adventurous enough, I guess. Our first CD burner came with Nero, and it would still be my choice for burning audio, but I've found it all but impossible to get a good burn of some kinds of data files. A laptop about a year ago came with Roxio EZCD, and it's miles ahead of Nero for data burns. Naturally, my new machine came with Nero, and the later (DVD) version is significantly improved; but I still felt the need to go buy Roxio to "complete the set." It is "better enough" to justify the price if you do a lot of data backup (esp. for someone who likes "long file names"). John |

From: The Fooles Troupe The free GNU version of Media Player Classic 6.4.8.2 (curent version) foobar2000 (contains a special terface for screen text readers) Audacity - useful and free Various versions of MS products - many of which are larger clumsier and slower for playback. It even includes "Real Alternative" to avoid Real Player (I just used it 5 minutes ago)....I have 6-7 programs, which have all sorts of features, I use for various things, including Ogg vorbis and MP3 files. XMPlay, dbPowerAmp player are two of the best. |

I'd suggest an interesting alternative if you want to do a bit of disc jockey work. There's a freeware program called T-Player. It's a smallish program, but it makes mixing songs pretty easy - beyond the typical setting up of play lists, it has a complete randomizer for all music files on your computer (that you want it to play) regardless of format. It also will mix from song to song - so instead of the typical pause beween song it automatically goes into the next song. On top of that it's quite user friendly. I act as dj at dances at my church and just bring my PC along to plug into the sound system there. 3000+ songs at my disposal, all easily at hand with T-Player. It's not perfect - for instance, it separates all songs into those be a different performer whether you want it to or not. This may not sound like a problem, but it's been a staedy bit of work changing the id files of the mp3s to that the performes names are all spelled correctly and follow the same convention. For example, I had songs listed under: Crosby Stills Nash and Young Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young Crosby Stills Nash & Young Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young Crosby Stills and Nash Crosby, Stills and Nash etc. By the way, if you want to organize your mp3 files so that the id tages are all nice and neat, spelled correctly, etc. I use Godfather and am very happy with it. It is also freeware. |
