They're claiming 21,408 images today (2,466 Artists) - with a 50,000 image goal. I'd guess they run about 35% landscape, 35% portraits, and the rest "everything else," (lots of ships and harbors, too) so it helps to have an idea of someone to look for. You can also go direct to their Alphabetical Index of Artists (The A's). The site "specializes" in "Academic Realism" - and you'll find no "modern/abstract/existential" stuff there - just good pictures. Google almost never goes there, and most of the stuff that Google image search comes up with are "inferior" quality images (IMHO). If you want a broader search for "good quality" images, and again – if you know an artist's name or the "name" of a painting, you should try ArtCyclopedia. This is a "search engine site" that will direct you to where you can find stuff by any "recognized" artist. The hardest part of finding good wallpaper pictures is that you need them 4 wide x 3 high to keep Windows from stretching them out of shape. (Well, you can always crop them.) John |

The site is intended to promote the "old-fashined" kind of art that most "common folk" can enjoy, and deliberately does not display the "clique" stuff that has to be explained with a lot of "psychobabble" before the agents can palm it off on overly rich pseudo-intellectuals. (My own very rough summary.) There are other places for "modern school(s)" of art. If you use the ArtCyclopedia link above, and put "Dali" into the artist search, it will give you links to the 5 or 6 museums that post web images of their own Dali works, and about 11 "image galleries" that have representative works. The "TigerTail" and "Annenberg" galleries are a couple that I'm familiar with and that are relatively easy to get into, although I haven't looked recently at what they have posted for Dali. I'll have to confess that my original post didn't answer gaber too well. Sorting the ARC artsit list by "nationality," I find that the few "Irish" artists all seem to have favored going to Rome and painting artifacts (with the exception of one or two who seem to have painted nothing but sheep). Does anyone know of an artist who painted "scenes of Ireland?" A Google image search does bring up some pretty good stuff on the Irish+castle search - mostly photographs, which are, of course, an ideal format for what was wanted. (I particularly liked the "editorial" on the Irish castle that was transported to the US and semi-erected here.) Since this thread has indicated some interest in image searches, I'm curious to know how many people have installed the "Google Search Bar," and whether anyone would venture opinions on whether it's really helpful. (Or maybe we just need a permathread on "How to Google.") John |
