They are good

We have seen them at Gloucester Festival, Bristol Cajun and I think Upton last year. Upton this year is in May see cajun-zyde.co.uk

I am just off to our Gloucester 2nd Sun night do at the Fountain Inn.

I used to play fiddle with jim at the red cow in Richmond and at the "wolsey" in hampton court. The band has always been one of my favourites on the cajun scene. Anyone deliberating wether or not to go and see them need to get of their behinds and go and dance cajun style!!!!

You know that, I know that, why do so many punters dislike the band?

Seriously, more people have told me that they dislike ZigaZag! than any other UK Cajun band. I don't understand why but it probably explains why Phil has started a new Zydeco band.

probably because anybody who has met phil thinks that he is a c**t. He has no manners and has no time for simple questions people want to ask him.

SBP....I used to sort of "run" (in the very loosest sense of the word!) or at the very least be an unfailing weekly regular at the (now sadly finished) Red Cow sessions in Richmond for a good 13-14 years but left about 12 years ago when I moved to Belgium.

Would you and Jim have been there when I was or were you sessioneers later?

Best regards,

moo

...it might be more accurate to say that I kept it going on a few occasions when it seemed in danger of failing! As far as I remember the session ran almost continuously for about 26 years. Such a shame it's finished...I still used to bring an instrument across to attend of a Sunday night when visiting London for work.

I was there as well from 1985 onwards. I last went in 2000 after I'd moved up north. I popped in in November 2001 only to be told that it had finished a couple of weeks earlier. Sic transit and all that. Anyone remember the Molly Malone's session in the Kew Road, circa 1993/94?

Mooman,
Last time i went was about 1999/2000. It was run by a fiddler called Bill ( If my memory serves me right.) I don't think we have ever met not if you stopped going that long ago (I am only 22yrs old)

Chris B (Born Again Scouser),

You wouldn't be Chris Boland would you?

Steve Benbow's Protege,

Yes I remember Bill well (always came on his bicycle!), and Mike Patten. They were both long-time attendees. And I met Alice in more recent years.

Such reminiscences!

moo (the c**t with the white hair as you used to refer to me if it is you Boland!)

Well despite the sniping above, I maintain a dance band has to appeal to dancers and I don't remember falling over my feet dancing to them, quite the opposite. And isn't the drummer a keen dancer? Says a lot really.

There have been Cajun (and Ceilidh) bands that I could name that wanted to play music rather than dance music at a dance. Such egoist are no use to dancers, only to themselves.

I saw Ti-Fer at Great Dunmow once. I agree, they were excellent. Never met this Phil bloke so I can't comment.

Yes, Ti-Fer were good. They came along at the tail-end of a great musical era which featured the Balham Alligators, Companions of the Rosy Hours, Electric Bluebirds, etc. all part of a really lively music thing going on in London pubs such as The Dog & Dumplings and The Weavers (God rest it's soul) - before the UK cajun "scene" went all anoraky (and started calling itself a "scene"...)

I like steam locos, morris dancing, sailing ships, & now cajun.
Do I have to wear a different anorak for each one, or will the purple number do?
Wife will be going to this event & me too if I feel up to it. I shall be the c**t with the long hair & beard.

P.S. Is there room to dance at The Foley Arms?

Dead Horse: I'm afraid "long hair and beard" will not be sufficient information to define you uniquely, judging by the cajun gigs I've played.

Well, I hope it all goes off well but I'd be on the lookout if I was promoting this gig. I've been to a number of Cajun gigs where the punters (especially some of the dancers) insisted on bringing their own drinks in with them. Besides being cheap and a bit sad, it causes the licensee to lose earnings and in some cases has put them off booking Cajun bands again. Just a word to the wise.

The stage presence did give me the impression even if I couldn't speak for the motivation, but I had some trouble Cajun dancing to Hot Boxx. It wasn't a problem with musicianship - just suitability, but that is a music skill nonetheless.

Mr Red, Aren't Hotboxx a zydeco band (who also play a bit of rock'n'roll)? Could explain why you had trouble Cajun dancing to them?
