Can anyone help me find the lyrics to a children's song that was commonly taught in Florida elementary schools during the 50's. I don't know the title but some of the lyrics went like this:

I suspect that the song in question is actually "Where The Morning Glories Grow" as modified by Florida school teachers; it's a song written by Richard Whiting around 1919 and covered by Bing Crosby among others; the version I know is by the legendary Cofer Brothers (original OK 45137, re-released Document DOCD 8021)

I remember, O I remember the place where I was born
Where the morning glories twine around my door at early morn
I've forgotten, O I've forgotten how long I've been away
But I'd like to wander back again down the lane to yesterday

I want to wake up in the morning where the morning glories grow
Where the sun comes peeping into where I'm sleeping
And the songbirds say Hello
I wanter to linger in the wildwood where the rippling waters flow
And go drifting back to childhood, where the morning glories grow

I had previously encountered the song Sorcha directed me to, but that is not the song I am looking for. I think Pete is probably right about the Florida version coming from "Where the Morning Glories Grow". The Folk process in action. Now what I need is someone who knows the Florida version. Thanks for the help guys.

I went to elementary school in the Miami area during the 70's. They use to play that song on the TV before morning announcements. The song is still stuck in my head. I sing it to my kids sometimes before bed. The lyrics I remember is a little different from yours.

Wow! What great nostalgia! I also grew up in South Fla in the 70's and have never forgotten that tune, but did forget some of the words-thanks for posting them-I've been looking-now I need to find the tune.

Written by Richard Whiting, Ray Egan, Gus Kahn in 1917. There should be some sheet music somewhere.

Here's a bio on Whiting:

Richard A. Whiting (November 12, 1891-February 10, 1938) was a writer of popular songs.

He was born in Peoria, Illinois. He attended the Harvard Military School in Los Angeles, California. Upon his graduation, Whiting began his career as a staff writer for various music publishers. In 1912, he became a personal manager.

In 1919, he moved to Hollywood and wrote a number of film scores. He wrote music, collaborating with such lyricists as BG DeSylva, Ray Egan, Johnny Mercer, Neil Moret, Leo Robin, Gus Kahn, and Sidney Clare, to produce a number of hits (listed below). He also wrote a number of scores for Broadway plays.

He was the father of singer/actress Margaret Whiting and actress Barbara Whiting Smith.

He died in Beverly Hills, California. He was inducted into the Songwriters' Hall of Fame in 1970.

OMG...

I have been going round and round the past couple of weeks, trying, for some reason, to remember the words to the song I sang in elementary school during the late 1950's, early 1960's. this thread has helped me to put it together. As i recall, the words are:

I like to wake up, in the morning
where the orange blossoms grow,
where the sun comes a peekin'
into where I'm sleepin'
and the songbirds sing "hello",
I like the fresh air,
and the sunshine,
it's so good for me, I know,
so, I'll make my home in Florida,

I'm sure there were variations from school district to district, but this is what I remember....and, I can't believe, here I am, 50 years later, and what memories this song invokes in me. Lots of good times, for sure.

It was a great time, and I miss it.

Just read in the paper that a music teacher in Winter Haven wants to make this the state song, and drop 'Old Folks at Home.'

Considering how many of us 50- and 60-somethings out there who are trying to remember the lyrics, I think he may be on to something. It got back in my head around Christmas, so I did a Web search and found others looking too. Also asked my Florida-born brother and sister-in-law two months ago because I'd been trying to figure out two lines I can't remember.

Here's my recall (early '60s Miami):

I wanna wake up in the morning,
Where the orange blossoms grow.
Where the sun comes peepin'
Into where I'm sleepin',
And the songbirds sing "Hello."

That is what is so wonderful about this song. All of us sang it in school or somewhere a long time ago. It was a Richard A. Whiting song and sung by Bing Crosby. Correct! That is why it is in the public domain and Billye Mullins Smith only has a thin copyright on it for changing the words Morning Glories to Orange Blossoms. However, with the added lyrics to make it have 3 verses and the catchy tune, it could really replace the current offensive state song that can't be sung in schools. The melody would sound great by an orchestra too. So lets all get behind it so that something new that has no history is adopted. The kids that are working on it will be changed forever.

In 1957 I was seven years old when my family moved to Florida from Pittsburgh; I grew up on a steady diet of hefty helpin's of emotional nostalgia conveyed in "Old Folks At Home", the state song of my new home. The song evoked longing for my own old folks (grandparents) at home in Pittsburgh.

It still does…

I have fond memories of canoeing and singing my way down upon the Suwannee River floating by the majestic old oaks brimming with exquisitely lush Spanish moss while warmth of the sunshine state nourished your body and soul.

Nothing touches our roots more deeply than family, and this is a song about our eternal search for connection, safety, security and a sense of belonging.

Old Folks At Home has been our state song since 1935. With respect for old folks at home as well as the "old folk" in each of us, I agree we revisit some of the lyrics, and keep this great melody around a while longer…

Maybe the Gov would support a songwriting contest for keeping the melody and revisiting the lyrics…?

If you live in Florida, one of your favorites is orange juice. My favorite food in the whole world is orange juice. Florida orange juice is the best. In elementary school I grew up on a steady diet of orange juice before school, and the Orange Blossom Song in school.

The Orange Blossom Song is certainly a candidate for state song of Florida (lyrics below).

Let's keep Old Folks At Home as one of our state songs, and just add the Orange Blossom Song as another.

Tennessee has five state songs.

Florida certainly deserves at least two!

If anything should be changed, let's consider a different state bird…

According to a friend who is in her 80s and is a native of Polk County, Florida, this song was sung by her and classmates as early as when she was in fourth grade. That means that it goes back into the 1930s. It follows that whoever wrote the florida words for school kids has got to be VERY old now. Is most probably deceased.
The song Where the Morning Glories Grow is from a Broadway play of 1917. The Lyrics were written by by Raymond Eagan and the great Gus Kahn, and the music by Richard Whiting (father of Margaret Whiting).
Making this the Florida song could be an embarassment when all the history unfolds.

At a Florida librarians conference, I presented this song to a large group during a workshop setting.The idea was to offer songs of greeting to begin the morning in a classroom. I was really surprised at how many people had not heard of it!(newcomers?) Everyone truly enjoyed it and wanted the lyrics. The lyrics are cute (very descriptive of Florida)and the melody catching. Morning announcements and student-produced technology would have an excellent learning opportunity here!
As an African-American, I find this song ('orange blossom...') much more tolerable and acceptable for the Florida I call home. It's also especially appealing and more teachable to children. I know we've made some "changes" to the 'old folks at home' but it was too little too late. Why not change it altogether?! I'd surely cast my ballot for this song to become the state song!

I grew up in south Florida in the 50's and learned this song at Hialeah Elementary School. I think it's a great choice for a new Florida State Song, especially since there are more lyrics than I remember. The first verse as we learned it is:

isn't Google great?! I was just trying to remember the lyrics this morning and "googled" the first line of the song...and WOW...seems it's not as obscure as I thought. I learned this song as a ssecond grader at Annie R. Morgan Elementary School in Jacksonville, Florida. The year was probably 1952 or 1953. Mrs. Brooks was our music teacher and she decided that since it was pouring rain outside, this song would brighten our day. I had no idea it was being taught all across Florida. I taught it to my daughter...and the beat goes on. Thanks, ya'll!!!!

It might have been "the state I call my own" but home rhymes with roam, so my old brain might be substituting.

These are the same lyrics I remember

I was born in Miami Beach in 1950 and attended Miami Springs Kindergarten where my 8 brothers and sisters learned this song and sang it daily.... led by Miss Nelson

Now I am a fourth grade teacher and have taught the song to my students over the years. Perfect for the Florida History Unit!

I have been singing this to my kids just like so many of the thread writers have said...they always looked at me funny and rolled their eyes...oh well, I always loved it.
Then, when I was courting my wife out in Louisiana, I'd sing it to her and tell her we'd be moving to Paradise soon... I won, took her home with me, and now we live in central Florida again.

I grew up in South Miami and we sang this every morning in elementary school (early 70's) before the announcements...from reading this, things were pretty consistent back then.

I'd love to get a copy of the original...well, the version that they played in school...don't know who/when that was actually recorded.

(The other elementary school song I found the original from in the same era was "chicken fat" - but can't find this one...)

I don't remember whether we sang this in Hillcrest School, Orlando, in the early '30s or I taught it at Concord Park Elementary in the early '50s, but it has been going through my head ever since I saw the bloom on my lime tree (before the freeze, sadly). Whoever supplied the lyrics and whichever way you sing it, it is a great Florida song. Thanks to all of you who sent lyrics; now I can sing it as I go about my day. You guessed it: I'm 85.

yes, i still love this song. i lived in Hollywood and attended Nova elementary school in the mid '60's. My mother taught choral music in North Miami Beach and she taught this song in class and to me and my brother and sister. the words i remember are a combination of what's been posted. it's still my favorite tune to hum around the house!

Now I do not recall how I learned this song as a child, but I have known it since very young. I myself am only in my late 20's. I was born and raised in southern Florida, as were my parents. I would have to guess that it was my mother or another relative that taught me since I do not recall learning in school.
I have really enjoyed reading this thread!! Brought back memories of sunny mornings on a swing set with my friends!!

Seems we have several different but similar versions we were taught. We same it in the mornings along with the National Anthem and Pledge of Allegiance. Good way to start the morning - and still is.

we sang this in school in the 60s in Orlando - i remember the words to be

I opened my window this morning and looked out over the orange groves when this song came to mind. I decided to google it and was pleased to find this site. I grew up in Lakeland in the 70's and it was taught to us at Dixieland Elementary by our music teacher, Barbara Garber.

I want to wake up, in the morning
Where the orange blossoms grow.
And the sun comes peepin into where I'm sleepin
and the songbirds say hello.
I want to wander through the orange groves,
where the children used to roam,
and go drifting back to Florida,
Back to Florida my home.

You all the right words. I sang it at Belle Glade, 1957. It would be nice for someone to sing it on You-Tube. Take the ball and run with it someone, lots of people would enjoy it.

I attended Killarney Elementary School in Winter Park from 1954-1959

We were taught this cute little song by our school's music teacher, whose name I have long forgotten, but I remembered the song.

I, too, grew up in the fifties singing this song at Central Elementary in W.P.B. right along with reciting the Lord's Prayer, Pledge to the Flag and probably a patriotic song.....What a great way to start the day ! For some reason, this week, I remembered just the first three lines and couldn't get it out of my head !!! Thanks to "Google" and this great site, I now have the rest of the song ! What wonderful memories it has evoked.

How interesting that we all sang the same song, and yet there are so many versions of it! I sang the following version in Miami in the mid-60's and to this date remember it fondly:

Wow! I thought I was the only one nostalgic about that sweet song. I moved to Jacksonvill as a new bride and raised my children there. As room mother many times, the children would always sing it on the busses that took us on field trips in the 60's. Old Southside Grammar is no longer, but that song lives on the hearts of those children who now have grands. Thanks everyone, for sharing.

I learned this song in 1955 in Mrs. Austin's second grade in a portable classroom (the school was still under construction) Hollywood, Broward County, Florida. It was called "The Florida Song". The version we learned was like the mid-sixties Miami version quoted above, except we sang "Where WE children used to roam".

I sing this version to my grandaughter all the time! Grew up in Florida and it's just one of those songs that has stuck in my head.. can't remember anything else but can remember this :) .. my sister is visiting family in Florida and just called to sing this to her and she fell in love with it.. I'll be teaching it to her when she gets back.. I also learned it in the mid 60's as did the posting from "GUEST" dated Aug 11, '09.. and it just brings back childhood memories! enjoy

I went to Coral Gables Elementary in the mid-60s and recall the lyrics like the mid-60s Miami version above. Two possible slight variants:

1) "a-peepin'"
2) "So take me back to Florida"

As I recall, we were taught music a few times a week, with a teacher who moved between classrooms. Other songs I recall being taught were "Wonderful Wonderful Copenhagen" and "Molly Malone."

My mother sang the same song with these lyrics:

She went to school in Florida between 1953-60 in Pinellas County.
