BIG Session at The Sloop, Barton, Lincs.

Subject: BIG Session at The Sloop, Barton, Lincs.
From: Rt Revd Sir jOhn from Hull

This was mentioned in another thread, but a few people might have missed it.The Sloop, Watersedge, Barton uopn Humber had a visit from the PEL inspectors on Tuesday, when they hassled the landlord ie telling him that a folk session in the public bar was illegal etc.It has been suggested that as many people as possible turn up to the next session, which is on Tuesday the 25th of March. As it is £5 per car to cross the Humber Bridge, Deanmister has suggested that people from the north side of the bridge may wish to car share for the bridge journey to save money. If anyone is interested in his suggestion, it might be an idea to post your name here, and arrange when and where to meet up etc.
this is a sort of protest session, to show the PEL people that we will not be frightened away etc, The Sloop is a nice country pub and serves good bears, so try to go if you can and keep music live.

The bad ones are the ones that frightened Goldilocks, apart from that I am in negotiations with my co-pilot about coming across next Tuesday.

Raggy NOT SO! Goldilocks was a nosy cow-the bears were within their rights, it would seem that the inspectors are the goldilocks, they should be put into a Watneys barrel and floated off down the Humber!! Raggy I'm working on this, keep in touch please. I'll pm my number or you pm yours.

Tony, licensee of the sloop, is adding a door at the weekend. All folkies in area commanded to attend. If music police turn up suggest they give an explanation to all why they are difying advice from Home Office to local authorities not to enforce the 2 in a bar rule.

Tues evening 8.30 Sloop Inn, Waterside Road, Barton.
Make sure before you set off that you know a member to get signed in as a visitor. Remember it is the licensee who gets the £3000 fine if we do not conform to the rules of a club exactly (the room is not all that big either). If several musos can bring digital cameras along, my friendly press man would like some pics emailing to him (he cannot get a press photoman there). It would be nice for him to be able to pic a pic of a muso being refused entry to go with his article.
It was suggested to me that the music police do not move in on our kind of operation without a complaint. This was confirmed by my press contact who got a statement from the licensing department that the MPs acted after "SEVERAL" complaints. I can think of a couple of candidates: there is for instance a pub up the hill that has a license and many costly acts well supported by paying punters. If this candidate is guilty, and I would not dream of laying such a charge without absolute proof which I have not got at this moment in time, it is despicable etc. I don't think I shall be going there again unless they are cleared in my mind.

PS. Could some technical wizard put the clock right, or are we supposed to be on Iraqi time.

I just heard from Skipjack that ET has secured Kate Adie's TV coverage of the session for Reuters. So I'll be nicely scrubbed-up with fresh shreddies on9.

Just to play devils advocate and all that. The pub may have a maximum number of people that may be in it at one time as a condition of the existing licence. This is based on a survey carried out by the fire brigade when the pub is licenced and is based on positioning and width of fire escapes. I worked in a large pub in london where this was the case. It may not be the case at the Sloop. It is of course up to the licencee (the guy or company whose name is over the door)to check this. If your going to put on a protest like this I Suggest you dot your i's and cross your T's. I wish you all every success I have come accross the insane, draconian, Nazi like fun killing practises of North Lincolnshire council before and nothing would please me more than to see them exposed. Its a haul from Manchester but I might well make the effort Is there a contact number/email address for adding to the entry list?

The authorities claim that under the current law a maximum capacity can only be imposed via a PEL.

Can't make it. We hadn't realised it clashed with a Norwich City football match. NCFC is not my priority but it is with others in the household...

Thanks John, I'll get there one of these weeks - have been meaning to try it for what may be more than a year now. Skipjack/Greg mentioned it when he visited us in the Norwich session and I thought it sounded well worth a visit...

Anyway, hope you all have a good night and things work out well. As for Norwich City, I think they have blown thier chances this year but I said the same last year and they made the playoff finals.

Jon

It was a great success. Thanks again to all the visiting supporters who made special efforts to be there. The local press sent a photographer and also a teleman was there. Our minute + will be on bbc1 Look North at 6.30pm tonight. The pub was heaving. The run up was pure farce. The licensing dept represented by a Gill Musgrave OKd the room set aside for our private do, noting that the door had a frosted glass which was fine, as the public could not see us. On the afternoon a Martin Salmon from N.Lincs Building Control condemned the room 'cos the frosted glass meant that we could not see a fire coming. The licensee (another Gill) had no option, but to close the pub for us, which gave us the full run of the place. I understand this may be the case in future weeks, games being finished, we will be the only people in anyway.
ET did mention that complaints often come from rival licencees with Mus Ls. Some of us have suspicions who it may be and I, for one, will not be struggling to entertain and be entertained on a Saturday up Tofts way ever again. You see, as a Stalinist, I reckon a man is presumed guilty unless proved innocent. ET will no doubt tell you what should be done about Ms/Miss/Mrs Musgrave.
PS Sorry for the previous misinformation. It is 5:24 am in the Mid West at this moment in time, not Iraq.

Thanks for a great night It was good to put a few names to faces. Thanks especially to ET who lent me the extra to get over the Humber bridge and saved me about half an hour of driving back to manchester. If some one could send me a video tape of the the look north I could capture it onto an mpeg file and email it to interested parties. Obviously it wont be on in my region. Thanks again and lets hope word gets out, what a ludicrous laws we are facing.
