Subject: Call for Entries!!!

Come one, come all - it's the KRCL Performing Songwriter Showcase. Previous finalists have called it "a slice of heaven", "a total blast", and "the best songwriting contest around." We're welcoming entries from solo singer-songwriters (sorry, no duos, trios, etc) performing original music.

Send your entry, postmarked by April 30, along with a $15 check made out to IAMA (or the Intermountain Acoustic Music Association) and a CD or rewound cassette with two songs showcasing your solo sound, to KRCL Showcase, PO Box 2187, Salt Lake City, UT 84110-2187. Please be sure your contact info (including email) is on the CD or cassette itself.

Finalists will be selected in a blind judging by a panel of judges, with scoring based on vocal ability, instrumental ability, and songwriting.

There will be ten finalists selected, all of whom will perform on the main stage at this year's newly-expanded Founder's Title Folk & Bluegrass Festival (growing from one day to three!) on Saturday, August 2, 2003 in the midst of the beautiful Salt Lake Valley.

Please note that these performances will be solo performances, and instruments will be limited to what you can carry on stage; no piano will be provided. All finalists will also be given free admission to the festival and a free camping pass. And this year's winner will be invited back for a paid main stage slot next year. (There'll be
prizes, too; not to worry!)

Please pass the word along to anyone who might be interested. And for more details, check out FOUNDERSFEST.ORG.

Don't delay - come enjoy song circles, great live performances from folk and bluegrass greats, and a chance to strut your stuff in front of an enthusiastic audience on the main stage of the Founder's Title Folk & Bluegrass Festival!

Suzanne,

I don't know if you expected European entries, but you did not exclude them in any way. After all, you said "come one, come all", so I did. And a cheque for 11 UK pds is now winging its way to Utah, together with a CD containing single instrument/voice versions of two of my songs.

Good luck with the showcase anyway

Susanne did not post this and may not see the thread-- I posted it from a mail list I belong to. Usually I specify that when I post but I forgot this time-- I'm a little messed up with cold medicine! :~)

Pay to perform? She is joking, right?

Fees to make application to be considered for a showcase are becoming more common. People just starting out consider it worth it. At least this one was upfront about it.

I've no problem, makes sense; there's lots of costs in arranging something like this. And if I want to strut my stuff in the US, a tenner is worth it.

Is this more of a 'performance' rather than 'song''contest'?
True its good to be able, ney essential to communicate your composition, but is it reaaly the composition that will be judged or the overall 'sound'?
Pity the poor bugger who can write but not play or even sing well enough to perform.
Surely its the content first, packaging 2nd.I dont play sleevenotes.
Send all the entries to me, no charge and I'll have my club adjudicate.
Better still send them to the Maidenhead folk club, they dispensed with the 'panel' and went democratic.Hey! does this contest reflect a change in stance by the U S on constitutional and human rights, and is this not already being played out on a wider world stage ? Should we be concerned by this trend?
Oh yeah ,who really won the race to the White house last time? Why the runner-up!
El Grek's songs are too good ,they'll be beyond your comprehension but enjoy whatever he's sent you.
Bang goes my next visit to Florida.

Peace

I jes' prints what I gets.

If a thread meant to list announcements, which I get on a regular basis, is going to become a debate about whether they are worthwhile, then they are not worth my while to post them.

Kendall, Don't go running off to Salt Lake. There is a similar event going on in Portland with a $25 fee but no travel expenses. They want bands with original music.

I'll still come to SLC, Susan...don't have a band anyway (nobody would play with me); well, not totally true, breezy has been known to condescend

Well, I get these pretty often. If I post them as they come, then by year's end there will be a list of the annual competitions, cuz although the exact dates may change, the festival names and general times of year won't.

Some people find these contests extremely worthwhile. Others who are not fond of singer-songwriter as a category often do not. But a credit for performing at a major festival is a credit, even if you only showcased.

Anyway, let's not clutter up the threqad with debates on the contests-- that would be a separate topic deserving it's own thread, dontcha think?

SINSULL, will you post more info on the one you mentioned?

Fares paid all the way to Urtaha and back if the judges vote you a finalist? That'd be pretty tempting, but I can't help feeling they don't envisage entries from this far away...

I didn't think so either, MGoH, but I thought I'd test the water - ready to be proven wrong. What's the harm anyway.
