Here we go again, Come-all-Ye!

Singaround / Session at the Bull Pub in Barton-le-Clay, Bedfordshire, UK (use postcode MK45 4LL for map search) on Monday 7th April, kicking off at 8.30pm.

All acoustic instruments (except for shaky eggs or pringles shakers that is) & voices very welcome at this cosy venue and we're always glad to see new faces :-)

It's held fortnightly to run in tandem with the music workshop which is hosted by the University of Luton on alternate Saturday mornings.

Come if you can, but if you can't then perhaps you can come to the next one which will be on Monday 21st April :-) Yes, it'll be on Easter Monday - everywhere else will be closed, so come & join us! If the pub's busy they've promised to open up the back room for us :-)

Good news about the award - who did all the Voting?

Good to hear about the juggling Ross - yes I'm getting excited - aren't you?

Early start on the thread coz I'll be at the Crediton festival over the weekend, so I won't be around to play on the net - just getting some posting in before I go. Of course I'll be fretting while I'm off-line, but I'll be back on Sunday to see what you've all been up to while I've been away!!! Think on.....

First they came for the shaky eggs
and I did not speak –
because I did not play a shaky egg
Then they came for the Pringles shakers
and I did not speak –
because I did not play a Pringles shaker
Then they came for the bodhrans
and I did not speak –
because I did not play a bodhran
Then they came for the guitars
and I did not speak –
because I did not play a guitar
Then they came for the voices
and there was no one left
to speak out for me.

This thread seems to have taken a worrying turn while I've been away - we appear to be becoming known for our percussion section *yuk*

C'mon chaps - we have a reputation to maintain - winner of Mudcat best session etc, etc. Let's just have those Shaky Pringles all in the rubbish bins where they belong & get on with the real matter at hand - making music *g*

So, who's coming tonight then????

I think the implication of that adaptation of Pastor Niemoeller's famous quote is that if you start being restrictive about what instruments are acceptable and what aren't, soon you'll have no session at all.

I don't necessarily subscribe to this view myself.
See the Folk police thread for discussion on similar topics.
I can't be bothered to make a clicky.

We'll just have to see how the cookie crumbles - sometimes it sounds really good, but at other times I think they're just doing it to wind me up!!!!

No, we don't impose restrictions at Barton, but a clip around the ear usually gets the message across :-)

I have been to most of the Barton sessions this year, and nobody has percussed where it is not wanted. Usually the shaky eggs and tambourines only come out at the end of the evening for the final singalong and everyone has great laugh doing it.

The Barton le Clay session is one of the most welcoming and fun sessions, due to Ross and MGAS, I have been to and has a great mixture of styles and abilities and instruments.

Nick (+ melodeon) & I are coming down. I think I'll sing my protest song about the proposed PEL licensing reforms (before, hopefully, the proposals are altered and the song passes its 'use by' date!)

Nick's learnt a few more tunes lately. Since starting to play last August (melodeon his first musical instrument) he's become a melodeon addict. Far from suffering performance nerves it is now hard to stop him jumping all the time at sessions. And he's nicked all my best fiddle tunes!!! :(

Thanks Anahata - that's solved that one

I'm sorry we've developed a pressure group in our midst - I thought we were fairly tolerant - we have no plans to end anything that's a laugh & trust we can do that while respecting everyone

Sorry Ian C - I think we unclash again at the end of June - thanks for running the awards - do we get a badge

Looking forward to seeing Julie & Nick

It was a really good evening - excellent to have other instruments there too. It would be great to have a semi session-singaround if we could mix up the musicians a bit *g*

All the teasing over the Pringles Shakers came to naught - I think we all coped quite well, tastefully done & only in the appropriate bits. Mind you, it would have been a different story if we'd have been graced by the presence of Bewitched & Silverfish - they've got a very enthusiastic percussion section, but they do play them very well indeed :-)

Lovely of Theo & Jennie to drop by - wonderful to hear the Fab Julie B & Nick too - that PEL protest song is excellent!!

Good to hear Cllr on form & in his element too - thanks for doing the request BTW - think I've got the words sorted now.

Dunno what the Ref will think of the new chorus to Hilary's Piggies - I wonder if I should tell on you Ross? Or is it a conspiracy??

Thanks for coming everyone.....

Yes, tell him!!!!

He's bound to find out sooner or later.

It'll either be a goal or red card for Mr Barton le Clay.

08 Apr 03 - 10:13 AM (#928635)
Subject: RE: Singaround Barton,Beds UK 7th April
From: My guru always said

I reckon it'll be a goal..... Here goes then:

Hilary's piggies are coming this way today,
And if you don't put her right she's going to make you pay,
So please don't let her piggies go astray,
For the world is not ready for judgement day.

I've no idea of the tune & I've a sneaking suspicion thatI'm being made out to be a bit of an ogress with a whip. Strange, that....

Thanks Hilary. Lovely night. We came a different way from MK and the journey was quicker for us. We'll probably make it down more often now.

I'll see about getting "If you want to sing a song..." added to the Mudcat Songbook. Meanwhile the lyrics are on an earlier thread:

PEL: A PEL Protest Song - Lyrics
Have tweaked the words a little bit since then, but they're much the same. Will try to get round to adding to songbook ASAP (if anyone wants sheet music/CD in meantime then just PM me).

I personally think the addition of Ross' chorus, has added a, Nick Drake, kind of surrealism to the song, and increased the shelf-life past the point the point where listener knows punchlines and story.

Don't worry MGAS if you really were an ogress, then people wouldn't write songs for you.

Anahata and I are going to the National. Look us up in the Bar ante-room tune session at Saturday 10:00 - 11:30 pm or in our very own Welsh and English tune session in the Senior Common Room on the Saturday 12:30 - 2:00pm. Bring some songs to sing and an instrument to learn some new tunes if you dare!
Encourage all your friends to join in!

I can't do that song anymore as I've been advised by the Pope, Tony Blair & the folk police that Christian songs would upset other religions in this beautiful country

We do Led Zeppelin medleys down our church - evidently satanists are pretty lethargic - Mrs Gotobed is pretty handy on the vicar's organ

How is everyone? - seriously - are you happy with your wash?
