17 Apr 03 - 11:07 AM (#935455) Subject: RE: Gaelic Interest in Chicago From: George Seto - af221@chebucto.ns.ca I think it would be wonderful. I'd have to see if I can get a cheap ticket to go to Chicago (I'm in Halifax, NS). Be neat to meet one of my favourite singers, and learn from her. Wish it was possible to get you to Celtic Colours. |
17 Apr 03 - 12:21 PM (#935512) Subject: RE: Gaelic Interest in Chicago From: Bearheart Check out The Irish-American News online. Published in Chicago, has lots of info relevant to organizations and pubs, etc, featuring Celtic/Gaelic music. Most of it's Irish of course. Also some of the other more general music orgs advertise stuff there sometimes. Sorry I don't know how to do blue clicky things. http://www.irishamericannews.com/ Bekki |

18 Apr 03 - 04:28 PM (#936137) Subject: Gaelic Interest in Chicago From: fsharpdim7 Christine, check out the Celtic fest for this year or next - http://www.chicago.il.org/CELTIC_FEST_FRAME.HTM Contact the Old Town School of Folk Music - they often have well-attended workshops. Also, if coming to Chicago, you could also tie it in with a concert with the Madison, Wisconsin folk society. Chris |
19 Apr 03 - 10:51 AM (#936455) Subject: RE: Gaelic Interest in Chicago From: Phil Cooper I believe there is interest in Gaelic songs in Chicago. A lot of places shut down in the summer, so that may limit your choices. There's some suburban places that may be able to do something as well. I'm writing from my significant other's computer, so can't put my hand on some relevant places to contact here. If you join up and send me a PM, I'll see what ideas I can dig up. |
19 Apr 03 - 10:58 AM (#936460) Subject: RE: Gaelic Interest in Chicago From: George Seto - af221@chebucto.ns.ca Phil, could you post them here? I can send an e-mail to her if she doesn't visit here soon. |
19 Apr 03 - 02:14 PM (#936585) Subject: RE: Gaelic Interest in Chicago From: GUEST Christine, you may wish to contact some of these agencies and organizations: Illinois Arts Council Irish Fest Traditional Arts Program Net Arts Midwest They all work with a number of arts groups and colleges, universities, etc. who present traditional events, and can likely give you some ideas of who might be offering appropriate events you could plug into. The Irish Fest I suggest because Milwaukee is so close to Chicago, and the organizers may be able to give you referrals to "lead-in" type events to the Fest held in Chicago in the month running up to their event, which is HUGE Do you not have a contact person to work with there? |
19 Apr 03 - 03:02 PM (#936607) Subject: RE: Gaelic Interest in Chicago From: GUEST BTW Christine, I would second the nomination for contacting Old Town School of Folk Music. Also, I forgot: Chicago Cultural Center and Chicago Humanities Festival and Irish American Heritage Center and Beverly Art Center (They do a summer festival, and sponsor the Irish Film Festival) and Illinois St Andrew Society and Royal Scottish Country Dance Society All of the above would likely be able to help you get some gigs doing song workshops, and would be culturally in tune to your sort of stuff. |
21 Apr 03 - 11:30 PM (#937519) Subject: RE: Gaelic Interest in Chicago From: Phil Cooper There's a place in the Chicago Suburbs called the Acorn Coffee Bar in Warrenville, that does workshops and sometimes can book concerts on short notice. The Lake County Folk Club, north of Chicago might be a place to look as well. I suspect that google can turn up links to them. If it weren't so close to the Fox Valley Folk Festival, they would probably be interested as well. I've been thinking furiously the last couple days and can also think of some individuals that might want to try setting up an informal workshop or house concert, but think that might not get as many people as you'd need to justify setting it up. Like I mentioned, above, a lot of places shut down in the summer around here. |
22 Apr 03 - 04:44 AM (#937621) Subject: RE: Gaelic Interest in Chicago From: GUEST,Christine Primrose I thank you all for responding to my request. I'll pass it on to my tour manager here. Hope to see some of you somewhere on my travels. Please say Hello. Both Alison Kinnaird (Harp player) and I are going to Washington DC early in July for "Scotland at the Smithsonian", then we are going to Bloomingdale Indiana and possibly Denver. Anyway again many thanks Leis na beannachdan Christine |
