Just to show we musos think about other things besides the License Bill, Hamish Bitchall has passed this on

AMNINA LAWAL SET TO BE STONED ON 3RD JUNE

The Nigerian Supreme Court has upheld the death sentence for Amina Lawal, condemned for the crime of adultery on August 19th 2002, to be buried up to her neck and stoned to death. Her death was postponed so that she could continue to nurse her baby. Execution is now set for June 3rd.

If you haven't been following this case, you might like to know that Amina's baby is regarded as the 'evidence' of her adultery. The father denied everything when he realised the trouble he was in. To find out more about sharia law, see

Amina's case is being handled by the Spanish branch of Amnesty
International, which is attempting to put together enough signatures to make the Nigerian government rescind the death sentence. A similar campaign saved another Nigerian woman, Safiya, condemned in similar circumstances.

By March 4th the petition had amassed over 2,600,000 signatures.

It will only take you a few seconds to sign Amnesty's online petition. Go to the web page

Thanks, Hille. I'll send it on to everyone I know.

Come on, folkies. It takes only a moment or two to sign it- and just maybe it will help.

Oh, if only Amnina had thought to have four witnesses to her interaction with the father of her babe. :(

Patriarchal mindsets... ggggggggrrrrrrrrrr

It occurs to me that if she and her paramour had been witnessed, in all likelihood all it would mean is that both of the parents would be sentenced to death. So it comes down to the judgmental mindset that sincerely believes in its right to enforce its beliefs. We in other countries and cultures are subject to that mindset also.

I can't believe they upheld the sentence against this Woman
Thank you for posting the petition Hille.
I will forward it on to my friends.
It just breaks my heart the inhumanity of this World at times...actually quite a lot of the "time" unfortunately.

In case you don't have a
Spanish dictionary handy,
nombre is the first name, appolido is the family name.

Apologies for typo - Hamish Birchall!!!

Yes, sometimes it feels like there's little we can do in this World to make a difference - but what little we can do, we should!

Thanks for posting this. Sometimes I think,"To Hell with respect for other cultures. This is just the cowardly bullying of women!" I hope that doesn't make me a racist... I'll pass on the petition.

There seems to have been a misunderstanding in the initial post here, which said that the appeal had been turned down and that the execution was set for June 23rd. That is not the case.

In fact what has happened is the the appeal against the sentence has been postponed. It is the appeal which is due to take place on June 23rd.

Bad enough, but not quite the same thing.

Here is the Amnesty International link about all this.

I thought the Nigerian government had responded to pressure by declaring it would no longer enforce stoning sentences imposed by the religious courts?

Not sure WYSIWYG .. in any case it may be that as this is a Sharia-imposed (religious) judgement that a secular court would not have any sway over it .. without running the risking of fomenting civil unrest .. witness the 200 deaths in riots and Fatwa on the (female) Nigerian journalist who wrote recently about the MIss World contest to the effect that Mohammed might have chosen a wife from among the contestants - she is now living in exile.

What is important that the Nigerian Govt. deals with the issue - there is a letter link through the Amnesty International site that McGrath posted

Anyone got a spare ticket ????

Televise the event and the Nigerian govt can pay off half their national debt.

Sure bet there is a lot less adultry after the execution!!

Gee, Gargoyle, the least you could do is use proper spelling. Well, maybe the spelling indicates the validity of your comments - or lack thereof. I had a request to delete this, but I guess I'll leave it and hope people will pretend to ignore it.

Amina's case was highlighted in UK news reports today. Amnesty International says there is an e-mail campaign with a letter that contains erroneous information. So if you are going to send any letters or launch any campaigns, if would be a good idea to check with Amnesty for further information and suggestions on the best course of action.

the problems with the petition campaign are discussed in today's Guardian Saving Amina

and also at the Amnesty page which McGrath of Harlow gave the link for - and there are links there to further background and campaign information
