It's ANZAC day in Australia tomorrow, and there will be much singing of that brilliant, moving song 'And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda'. The only war song (as opposed to poem) that I know of which has equal sadness, bite and sense of the horror of war is 'Hanging on the Old Barbed Wire' - but I don't know the tune. Is it posted on the web somewhere, or are the lyrics sung to a well-known tune that I might know? Thanks.

Go to Google, search "hanging on the old barbed wire" (don't forget the quotations marks). I stopped browsing on the 4th page.

Click here to listen to a short extract from a variation of the song performed by the Roosters Concert Party some eleven years after the war in 1929 (MP3 format 105kb)
(start disturbed)

Hope I could help you a little bit

Very similar to the Roosters version above, I've heard it sung to the hymn tune that goes:
"Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord...." first line, and the line that goes.. "His (something )goes marching on."

Glory, Glory, Hallelujah?
