The one on SingOut! is a bit weird... too much influence from the West African versions maybe. Listen to that .wav file I posted. That's how the Kenyan versions sound... very simple. (The Swahili pronunciation is pretty darn good for Canuks, too!) Makeba, and those that copied her versions, had poor pronunciation as they weren't native Swahili speakers. (Kidjo's is awful!) And forget about Pete Seeger's pronunciation... it's worse than his spanish. (Sorry Pete.) Safari Sounds does an OK version... they're from Kenya. Like to here a typical East African group singing Malaika? Go to this page: Low Tide: The Music and click on "Listen to Malaika" (3rd music file): I could post a gif file somewhere I guess. Is there a place to post these on Mudcat? I could do an ABC as well, after all I managed to do it on my cell phone which is about the same, but it's tedious. That choral group is OK, but frankly, I heard better choral groups in Kenya--even high school groups. One reason Malaika kind of stands out in East Africa, is that the music is not usually of the same quality as other parts of Africa (IMO). To my ear, Zairian music, and stuff from Zimbabwe like Thomas Mapfumo, is far superior as far as musicianship and beauty is concerned. Some of the competitive a cappella stuff in Kenya was OK, but generally the music you here on the street is raucous, tinny and poorly played. The Kenyans must like it though. In contrast, Malaika is sweet and tonal. BTW, you'd think Kenyans would be listening to contemporary African American music, but actually American Country is much more popular there. We didn't know what the words ment, how to write it or what language it was. We were eight and playing we were africans... It was the first foreign song I learned, before I was able to speak english. And there it is, and I burst into tears, thinking of that particular friend, who is now dying of cancer, 35 years old, and I am desperate to sing it to her again, maybe for the last time... The line "Nashindwa na mali, sina we" literally meaning "I am defeated by wealth, without you" could probably be better rendered as "I am worth nothing, without you". The phrase "without you" (sina we) is an important part of the statement. |

See this excerpt from an online article: The Swahili language, is basically of Bantu (African) origin. It has borrowed words from other languages such as Arabic probably as a result of the Swahili people using the Quran written in Arabic for spiritual guidance as Muslims. As regards the formation of the Swahili culture and language, some scholars attribute these phenomena to the intercourse of African and Asiatic people on the coast of East Africa. The word "Swahili" was used by early Arab visitors to the coast and it means "the coast". Ultimately it came to be applied to the people and the language. Regarding the history of the Swahili language, the older view linked to the colonial time asserts that the Swahili language originates from Arabs and Persians who moved to the East African coast. Given the fact that only the vocabulary can be associated with these groups but the syntax or grammar of the language is Bantu, this argument has been almost forgotten. It is well known that any language that has to grow and expand its territories ought to absorb some vocabulary from other languages in its way. A suggestion has been made that Swahili is an old language. The earliest known document recounting the past situation on the East African coast written in the 2nd century AD (in Greek language by anonymous author at Alexandria in Egypt and it is called the Periplus of Erythrean Sea) says that merchants visiting the East African coast at that time from Southern Arabia, used to speak with the natives in their local language and they intermarried with them. Those that suggest that Swahili is an old language point to this early source for the possible antiquity of the Swahili language. Words from Other Languages It is an undeniable truth that Arab and Persian cultures had the greatest influence on the Swahili culture and the Swahili language. To demonstrate the contribution of each culture into the Swahili language, take an example of the numbers as they are spoken in Swahili. "moja" = one, "mbili" = two, "tatu" = three, "nne" = four, "tano" = five, "nane" = eight, "kumi" = ten, are all of Bantu origin. On the other hand there is "sita" = six, "saba" = seven and "tisa" = nine, that are borrowed from Arabic. The Arabic word "tisa" actually replaced the Bantu word "kenda" for "nine". The Kumasi Project provides the lyrics of the song "Malaika" as found on the recording "Mama Africa: The Very Best of Miriam Makeba". The Kumasi Project also provides this commentary about the song: "Authorship of Malaika is disputed. A Kenyan named Fadhili William recorded it a couple of times in the late 50s and early 60s. He says he wrote it and he is generally recognized as the owner. Miriam Makeba made it famous with her recording of it in 1964(?). Angelique Kidjo copied Makeba's version sound for sound as best she could but between the two of them, they really mangled the words in Swahili. You can hear Makeba singing the song to her husband Stokely Carmichael and Angelique put all that stuff in her song not knowing what she was saying. It appears the song was written in the 40s by a Tanzanian but two different people are credited. So no one really knows (except for Fadhili and the Tanzanians). Malaika was transcribed in Joan Maw's Twende! A Practical Swahili Course and also in Magdalena Hauner's Nyimbo za Kiswahili. The early Fadhili William recording (1959) has only two verses and so do these two transcriptions. However, Mariam Makeba's recording has a third verse (the Pesa... verse) and a later record by Fadhili also has the Pesa verse. It is likely that Fadhili did not write the original two verses but may have authored the "pesa" verse. It appears from Kwame Bandele's internet posting that Grant Charo gets credit for the song in the Hauner book. Other East Africans claiming to have written the song are Lucas Tututu from Mombasa and Adam Salim from Tanzania. Researcher Flemming Harrev says that Salim claims to have written the song while living in Nairobi in 1945-46. He recorded the song for Columbia Records in 1950. Fadhili is now generally recognized as the composer for royalty purposes."... |

The accapella group "Malaika" appears to have been formed by two sisters who used to be vocalists with that band. "Their music bubbles with the sparkling sound of soukous and swings to the buoyant beat of mbaqanga but Cheza is uneasy with the "African" label. Heck, the seven-piece Ottawa band even boasts two singing sisters from Tanzania (Neema Mugala and Stella Haybukhai), yet leader Paul Weber still prefers the less specific "worldbeat" term. "Apart from Neema and Stella, none of us grew up with this music," Weber says. "We're just a bunch of white guys who happen to love these sounds. What we do is more of a hybrid." Describing the band's soukous style, he says, "We don't have that finesse you hear in a band like (Zaire's) Loketo, who are locked into a groove with an incredibly tight, ultra-clean sound. We have the energy and the two-guitar interplay, but it has a dirtier edge. It's more like garage soukous."... True, Cheza's no Loketo. But listening to super-smooth tracks like "Asante" and "Josée" from the group's smooth self-titled debut album (Canal), you have to wonder what Weber's worried about. Within Canada at least, Cheza can hold its own with any number of African-based acts. Weber, who plays guitar, writes most of the songs and shares vocal duties with Mugala and Haybukhai, first fell under the spell of African music after living in Senegal in 1980, as part of a cultural exchange program with Canada World Youth... Mugala and Haybukhai have since gone on to form their own a cappella group, which also performs at North By Northeast. Named after the classic Tanzanian song they auditioned with for Cheza, Malaika mix African folk songs with original tunes by Mugala, Haybukhai and members Beth Ferguson and Lee Hayes, bringing a much-needed global approach to women's vocal groups in Canada". |
