09 May 03 - 05:57 AM (#949209) Subject: RE: BS: Sorcha is Ver' Frustrated From: GUEST,Jon sorcha, try opening up an MSDOS promt/Command prompt and type in ping www.mudcat.org And press return. You should see something like: Pinging mudcat.org [207.103.108.105] with 32 bytes of data: Reply from 207.103.108.105: bytes=32 time=281ms TTL=115 But with your problem, you will probably get a message something like "unknown host". |
09 May 03 - 08:11 AM (#949232) Subject: RE: BS: Sorcha is Ver' Frustrated From: Jeri I had this problem at work once, although not with Mudcat. I'm not an expert, so this is is 50% out of my arse. I don't think anything's wrong with what I'm saying although I may be simplistic in both ideas and vocabulary. If you can get to the website by using the IP number but not the www address, it's a problem with the domain name registration. Could be at the website's end - they fail to register it or it lapses or something. Since everybody else is getting in, that's not what happened. Servers periodically get this registry. If it gets buggered in some way, your ISP will not know where to find 'www.mudcat.org' - the address isn't connected to the IP number, which is what it uses. The problem with setting a cookie using the IP address is because of the way Mudcat sets and reads cookies, which is also a number/name problem. My guess is the problem will eventually correct itself when your ISP gets the latest registry. In the meantime, you can tell 'em THEIR SERVER isn't connecting the domain name with the relevant IP number and no one else posting here has this problem so it's GOT to be them. |
09 May 03 - 08:43 AM (#949245) Subject: RE: BS: Sorcha is Ver' Frustrated From: JohnInKansas Sorcha - You mention changing outgoing email service. Do we assume that you did not change your ISP for general web connection? I don't have WinME to look at for details, but my O'Reilly Guide to - suggests a conflict between the new email server setup and your ISP. The quick check would be to turn OFF email temporarily and then disconnect/reconnect to your ISP without email and see if things work better. If your new email connection is set up to "Always connect" you may have to diddle with the connection setup to turn it off completely. (Just closing your email program may not shut down the email connection, but you could try that first.) "Taking out" the most recent change(s) is one of those "golden rules" of troubleshooting, and there is a "speculatively plausible" reason why this might work. Just turning off the email program is not likely to help by itself. You need to re-establish the connection to your ISP after you've "broken" the email connection to be sure you've isolated the problem. John |
09 May 03 - 08:43 AM (#949246) Subject: RE: BS: Sorcha is Ver' Frustrated From: Rapparee It's the DNS (domain name service) server. Probably never had anyone connect to the 'Cat before and therefore didn't have the IP/domain name connection loaded. It *should* pick up the connection from other servers at some point, but that could take awhile. Interesting week here, Sorcha -- I'll PM you about it tomorrow. |

09 May 03 - 12:15 PM (#949397) Subject: RE: BS: Sorcha is Ver' Frustrated From: Sorcha Well, I finally got it sorted. An hour on phone with local Geek, he couldn't help, 2 hrs on phone with ISP Help line. It was his challenge for the day. We did a lot of stuff, and finally fixed it, but even he didn't know what we did that worked. Thanks for trying to help. |
09 May 03 - 04:54 PM (#949613) Subject: RE: BS: Sorcha is Ver' Frustrated From: GUEST,Jon sorcha, perhaps it was just co-incidence that it came back when it did... As you probably have noticed, I changed the location of the annexe as a temporary measure because of a similar sounding problem. Neither Pip or I could access jonbanjo.com using freeserve on our computers. I could however access it using an alternative dial up account. The problem was there for a few days and then resolved itself. There was no change of configuration on either computer during that period. I can only assume that freeserve for reasons unkown (there was no question of a domain name expiring) to me lost the DNS details for jonbanjo.com during one update and getting re-instated on another. John, one problem I have had with email is that Outlook Express caches IP addresses. We went through a server change at jonbanjo.com. I set the new email accounts up with new passwords thinking that when the DNS changes went through, my old passwords would get rejected. As it happened, this box managed to run about 3 weeks without me rebooting. It was only after that reboot that I got the old passwords rejected (I guess the old account on the other server must still have existed), I changed them and then got a load of email including payment due followed by a late payment notice from the ISP I use for web hosting. I emailed them apologising and explaining why the payment had been late and they replied that I wasn't the only customer who had got caught out by the behaviour of OE. I did find a plus side to OEs ways with the Annexe problem mentioned above BTW. Even though freeserve refused to recognise jonbanjo.com, I realised that all I had to do was close IE, connect using my "emergency" (and pay per minute) ISP, open OE, and check my emails. Once done, I could close that connection and dial up on my flat monthly rate 24/7 connection. |
09 May 03 - 08:41 PM (#949643) Subject: RE: BS: Sorcha is Ver' Frustrated From: GUEST,.gargoyle Sorcha sorry to break the news to you.
The mudcat has begun to block access went posting limits from a single, abusive internet address are exceeded in a 24 hour period.
Cut back the chatter, move it into PM's and you will be ok 24/7.
Sincerely,
To you, it may seem cruel - but something must be done, your've destroyed the fun, it looks like an over-run by fools. |

10 May 03 - 07:57 AM (#949836) Subject: RE: BS: Sorcha is Ver' Frustrated From: fiddler Hmm..... there is a problem with IEv 6 where the (last but one I think) patch means it will not connect to all sites all the time, also won't work properly on all sites all teh time but will on some (all) sites some of the time!! I spent two days discovering this un admitted bug in the MSh*tE system. So the problem may re occur I hope it doesn't missed you!!!! A XX |
10 May 03 - 08:22 AM (#949846) Subject: RE: BS: Sorcha is Ver' Frustrated From: JohnInKansas fiddler - The only thing similar to what you describe that I've seen is that some of the recent updates on IE6 slightly changed the response to cookies for particular levels of the "privacy" settings. I have had to "allow cookies" on a per-site basis for a few places that I used to get into without any special actions. Some sites won't connect if you "refuse" their cookies, and the updated IE6 seems to refuse a lot more of them - at the same "privacy level" setting. Click the "Tools" button, "Internet Options," select the "Privacy" tab, and click the "Edit" box to tell IE that it's okay to take a cookie, and you'll probably find the sites work ok. (You'll have to decide whether you want to take the cookies.) I'll watch the bug reports, but so far I haven't seen any feedback on other common "site-specific" problems due to the updates. John |
