what's this uproar about Morris dancing

Who is this "Morris" guy, why is he dancing and why does the crown require a license? Furthermore, why all the fuss?

No, I'm not stupid, this "dangling participle" was too good to leave alone.

If we're talking about the guy with the red handkerchief that he is twirling around in a ladylike manner, it aught to be banned. It's a poor example, indeed, that he is seting for all the red blooded men of this world.

Is this enough to get you morrisers in a dither? If not, I can elaborate further.

Boy, (or girl) can I get cranky, or what?

He's obviously a victim of discrimination, as with a name like Morris he has to be either Jewish or gay. Or maybe he's from West Cork or Kerry in which case he rules the roost but nobody can understand a word he says.

(Sailing close to the wind, but anyone who knows me will realise that I'm only messin')

Yours faithfully Morris.

Who has heard (many times) all the jokes about his name, but is not really in the mood for jokes about it at this current time.

Morris is, in fact, dead.

I danced with Morris Sunderland him more than once (though I'm not ordinarily a morris dancer) and I have fond memories of him.

Stevenage Sword was given much encouragement by Morris, then squire of the Morris Ring and fool of Offley Morrismen. He persuaded the team into the Ring in 1975.

Morris on!

:-)

APC, Morris can not be Jewish - you have to be a complete prick to be a Morris dancer :-)).

Plume - not mutually exclusive - he is JEWISH AND he is GAY - but lacks the genetic predisposition to style, taste and art.

If Cranky yankie should care to enter this green and plesant land, I'm sure there are many Morrises {Morrisi,?}, who would be only to pleased to pictureise him with the help of a good ash staff!

Perhaps if there were more Welsh Morris sides, that bloody man Howells might have more consideration for them!

I presume that if a Morris side were to originate in a Welsh Valley, they would dance with lights on their hats, but I suppose that would make them Wolseley dancers.

Cranky Yankees we can cope with (they know no better, poor colonial dears), it's ignorant Welsh prats like Howells and religiose, power-mad Scots like Blair we could well do without.

Lanfranc - Welsh morris from Swansea, Cardiff and Newport has been going for about 30 years, but until they start dancing in poncy winebars, prats like Howells won't know they're there. And Cranky - do lighten up, boy. Those jokes were worn out decades ago, like the jokes about banjo players. Takes all sorts, lad - even yours.

Chris Leslie [Fairport] plays for Adderbury, just ask the guy who tried to sell him a violin tutor book at Banbury last year!

Andrew, the crane driver:
Truth is, I don't know better. But, it's not the morris dancing itself that I'm taking the mickey out of, It's all the hooplah that has been posted of late, here. Though I spent 4 happy years in the UK (at RAF Lakenheath and SOHO) I've never seen Morris Dancing, nor do I know what it's about.

I didn't really intnd to insult anyone or demean Morris Dancing. IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE FUNNY. Maybe someone should start a thread explaining what Morris Dancing is.

Cranky Yankee - you can get in a cranky if you want, everyone is entitled their opinion. Heres mine:-

I used to dance border Morris in years gone past, and really enjoyed it. Black faces, rag jackets, big sticks and plenty of beer!!       Hankies may look poncy, but boy can I tell you that it takes a lot of stamina to keep dancing. I found it to be agreat form of exercise we got plenty of fresh air to boot.

LOL Lanfrank,

I have an old Wolsley six keeping the weeds down in my back garden, been wondering what to do with it, (light up radiator badge and all), Maybe I should call out the Green Ginger Morris from down the road and see if they fancy converting to Wolsley dancing!!?? Can just see the Headline "Banned Morris Dancers take up Pannel Beating" Immages of Basil Fawlty and a "damn good thrashing" :-)

Sounds like Prince Alberts, you'll find them somewhere on the web but make sure you switch your adult content filter off.

Crazy Yankee: to anybody on this side of the Atlantic your comments do not sound funny, they just sound like yet another lazy tabloid journo looking for a cheap laugh.

There are some quite good American 'Morris' sides, in fact they would put a lot of our sides to shame. Wild Hunt comes to mind.

After 15 years in the Morris I got let off for good behaviour (or bad can't quite remember)

Hobby Horse Festival in Banbury soon, for thos of you who wish to know more earch for Banbury Hobby Horse Day.
