It's central for lots of lovely country, Lake District is only a spit and whistle away, the Scottish border towns of Jedburgh, Hawick, and Selkirk are all easily reached. Glasgow and Edinburgh are not too far either for week end jaunts. Portpatrick and the Rinns of Galloway, and Luce bay, plus there are lots of places to go fishing, both game and sea fishing are available. All in all it's a good centre, the town's not much to write home about, but the surrounding countryside is great.
You'll enjoy it....Giok

Well celebrated in music. There are fiddle tunes called "A trip to Carlisle", "The Carlisle Reel" and "Carlisle Races". The famous Scottish song "The hundred pipers" refers to an event that happened in Carlisle in 1745(though a recent Mudcat thread on the subject cast some doubt on whether it ever happened). The "Scarlet town" of Barbara Allen is commonly supposed to be a corruption of Carlisle. A Kingston Trio song(I think) had the lines:
And Billy broke locks
And Billy broke bolts
And Billy broke all that he came nigh.
This was an American version of an old Border Ballad about an escape from Carlisle Castle.
The etymology of Carlisle is supposed to be from Caer Luguvallium (the castle on the Roman wall). The local accent is strange and unfamiir to people in the rest of England. There are some very strange placenames in the region of Carlisle, including Cargo, Aspatria, Blennerhasset and Blencogo. There is a big music festival in nearby Brampton which ahs a lot of folk music. In the military museum in the castle you can see a very old painted tambourine(or bodhran if you prefer the Irish name).

In the Cumbrian dialect the town is frequently called "Carel". I was refused entry into a pub in Carlisle once some years ago.I can't remember the name of the place, unfortunately. There is a nice very homely night club with an open fire called "The Front Page", where I used to play but not for years, so I cant vouch for it still going.
Offhand, that's about all I can think of about Carlisle.

If you have a Neolithic Bent,(and who hasn't)you've also got access to some of the finest Stone Circles in Britain.

Best of luck to you....

Many thanks for your replies, I am a bit worried about the move as I have lived in Yorkshire for 25 years and its going to be a wrench leaving all that has become familiar. But on the other hand I shouldn't treat it as a problem - its an opportunity (I wish I believed that!)

cheers

Leaving God's country can be difficult, but don't worry after a bit you'll feel at home. Look on it in the Peter Pan fashion as an awfully big adventure.

I'd be bloody delighted to leave Yorkshire for Cumberland: where, to take one obvious example, the sun sets in the sea, as God intended. In Yorkshire it rises over the sea, which is unnatural as far as I'm concerned.

Both Cumberland and Yorkshire are history now, alas, but the names will never die.

One was a suausage and the other was a pudding. I think this is what he means by history now.
I may be wrong, but that's unlikely too......Giok
