From: nickp OK, well, this may get sidetracked fairly quickly but I could do with the dots (or abc) of the above tune which I believe is of ScotsIrish origin and has worked/is working its way into the American (old time) scene, possibly via the contradance repertoire. Its definitely in 4/4 time although a web search implies it might be related to the Irish Washerwoman (6/8 jig). Any suggestions catters - before we get any creep. Thanks, Nick |

A non-punning link - seriously meant - is that it would go well with 'Shove That Pigs Foot A Little Further In The Fire' as a medley. Bayard (1944) knew of only this version of the tune but noted that it was possible it was the a derivative of the familiar jig "The Irish Washerwoman" recast in 4/4 time, and with the order of parts reversed. Editorializing, he thought it made a distinct improvement on the suspected original melody. Breathnach (1976) also noted the similarity. It's in the repertoire of a band I played in some 20 years ago. We used it for "American" dances - contras etc. I hadn't connected it with a Scottish origin, these things seem to have gone backwards and forwards a number of times.
