Does anyone know where I could find the lyrics and possibly the chords to The Dreadful End of Marianna for Sorcery off of Malinky's albulm Last Leaves? I believe that it was written by Karine Polwart. Any help would be gladly appreciated

Transcribed from a sound sample found at http://www.malinky.com/lastleaves1.htm (I have not attempted to use Scots spelling.)

Marianna Olderham (?) was a young lassie with golden hair,
Sweet and honest through and bonnie and lover of one John Sinclair.
Marianna met the factor at the dawning of the fold (?)
And he said, "Lie with me now, Marianna, and you will not want for gold."

"Well I thank you for..."

One review describes the song as "a narrative ballad based on a George Mackay Brown short story."

Hey there. I play with Malinky - it's always nice when the stout burghers of the Mudcat make reference to our work. I suppose I could always suggest you buy the album, heh, heh. Where did you hear the song, then? Little things like this always interest us as we like to know where in the world people are playing our songs. Karine will be well chuffed when I tell her about this thread.
I hope you like the song, and there's now two albums of Malinky stuff on the market, if that takes your fancy.
All the best
m.d.

I believe the first line is 'Marianna o' the howe...'
...and as the pregnant girlfriend of the fiddler in Malinky, can I second Mark's suggestion to buy the CD... we could use the money eh! ;-)

Yep, feed the babies of the world! Lyrics below.

Karine P

THE DREADFUL END OF MARIANNA FOR SORCERY
(Karine Polwart)

1.
Marianna o' the Howe, was
a young lassie wi' gowden hair
Sweet and honest, true and bonnie
and lover of one John Sinclair.
Marianna met the factor
at the dawning, at the fold.
And he said, "Lie with me now Marianna,
and ye will not want for gold"

2.
"Well I thank ye for yer offer
but I fear it canna be.
I maun lie with John Sinclair, for
he's the only one for me."
So the factor, sore affronted,
whispered evil of her name.
Every sorrow and misfortune,
'twas Marianna was to blame.

3.
Soon there came a deputation
Marianna for to see.
For to slight her reputation
"The de'il has laid his hand on ye.
Ye've soured the cream and blighted the corn
and danced wi' fairies on the hill.
Ye who are of devil born and
ye who bow to no man's will."

4.
Seven evenings, seven mornings
they spoke of Marianna ill.
There they shamed her, stripped her & maimed her
but they never tamed her will.
"Let her sweetness not deceive you,
evil hides itself right well.
Once within it will never leave you
Marianna, you'll burn in hell."

5.
"Who are these who stand against me?
Who are these who slight my name?
Let them tell their lies before God
and let them hang their heads in shame."
Then she saw a sight that grieved her
All the hope inside her died.
John Sinclair all clad in satin
Standing at the factor's side.

6.
"I was child and now a woman
But I shall be no man's wife.
For my love has me forsaken
and I want no more of this life".
They tore the hair from Marianna,
the witch's snare of gowden thread.
Marched her tae the Gallowsha'
and whipped her sair until she bled.

7.
In the crowd she spied her lover
and he had his new coat on.
Soon the flames danced all above her
and the people danced till the dawn.
Marianna o' the Howe, was
a young lassie wi' gowden hair.
Sweet and honest, true and bonnie,
betrayed by the factor and John Sinclair.

Inspired by George Mackay Brown's story "Witch" from the collection "A Calendar of Love".

Thank you Karine, for sharing your song...... I think I saw you a few years back... didn't you visit Oz with the "Battlefield Band"?

I hope you take this as a compliment... I always guessed the song was "trad"...... sort of like Ralph McTell's "Hiring Fair" sounds trad....

Hi there this is from Steve!

This is Steve Byrne from Malinky and I played cittern and bouzouki on Marianna on Last Leaves.

The real answer is that the chords largely follow the melody. It was originally played in B minor on a 5-course long-scale cittern tuned DADAD, capoed at the 9th fret, giving BF#BF#B. The drone of the cittern's bass strings allowed a lot of playing around the melody, with the chords mainly working around Bm, A and G.

It was never written down in any way but if anyone really wants the chords try emailing me off-list at - steve at malinky dot com - and I'll do my best to give a basic outline.

thanks!
Steve

Hi,
if somebody from Malinky is still visiting this thread, could you please tell me what a "factor" is ? I canĀ“t find a relevant translation anywhere. I presume he was some kind of minister... clergyman... important person of the law ?

I've always been curious about the tune. I first heard Karine singing it in a pub session not long after she wrote it - at the time I thought it might have been adapted from "Como poden" from the Cantigas de Santa Maria. I asked her and she thought that might have been possible but she really didn't know how much of it she was responsible for or what any antecedent might have been. Now, it seems to me to be just as close to "Babylon is Fallen". It's a good bet Karine knew both of those.

Not a tune you'd want to be fighting a court case over, anyway.
